In the fall of 1873 an educational movement was quietly initiated from her home in Boston, Massachusetts. A politically and socially sophisticated leader, she recognized the need that women felt for continuing education and understood how to offer the opportunity within the parameters afforded women of nineteenth century America. -

None but a man of grand proportions could have emerged into prominence to stand with them. Webster, Choate, Story, Benjamin R. Curtis, Jeremiah Mason, the Hoars, Dana, Otis, and Caleb Cushing were among them. Of the lives and careers of all of these, full and adequate records have been written. But of him who was first their associate, and later their judge, the greatest legal figure of them all, only meagre accounts survive. It is in the hope of sup plying this deficiency, to some extent, that the following pages are presented. It may be thought that too great space has been given to a description of Shaw's forbears and early surroundings; but it is suggested that much in his character and later life is thus explained. -

Conversations: An Online Journal of the Center for the Study of Material and Visual Cultures of Religion (mavcor.yale.edu) Benjamin Paul Akers, St. Elizabeth of Hungary Lauren Lessing Benjamin Paul Akers, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, 1860 In July 1857, a correspondent for the Philadelphia Inquirer visited Benjamin Paul Akers’ studio in Rome. He wrote: “A little statuette of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, at the moment when the bread in her apron was changed to flowers, promises to be very fine; the attitude is graceful and dignified.”1 This clay statuette (which is now lost) served as the basis for at least three large marble versions of St. Elizabeth produced by Akers and his studio assistants between 1859 and 1860, including the sculpture now owned by the Colby College Museum of Art. [Fig.] Akers’ sculpture depicts a thirteenth- century noblewoman who, according to legend, purloined food from her castle’s larder to distribute among the poor. When Elizabeth was intercepted by her husband, who demanded that she reveal what she carried wrapped in her cloak, the stolen loaves were miraculously transformed into roses. Although Akers typically worked in a neoclassical style, St. Elizabeth--with her small head, elongated limbs, elaborate drapery, and sinuously curved posture--is decidedly Gothic. After the sculptor’s untimely death from tuberculosis in 1861, critics praised this figure as one of his finest productions. Akers’ obituary in the New York Herald states: “In [St. Elizabeth], more than any of his completed works, the most peculiar and rarest qualities of the gifted artist are exhibited.”2 Given the fact that Akers was a Protestant working at a time when nativist Conversations: An Online Journal of the Center for the Study of Material and Visual Cultures of Religion (mavcor.yale.edu) and anti-Catholic sentiments ran high in the United States, his choice to depict a miracle performed by an Eastern European saint does indeed seem peculiar, as does the popularity of his sculpture. -

This thesis explores Henry James’ engagement in his relatiVely neglected early Siction about Italy with material from contemporary magazine culture. By bridging the gap between critics who focus on James’ relationship with Italian culture, and those who examine James’ relationship with his publishers and audience, it aims to explore how he uses interest in Italy manifested in literary magazines to deVelop his writing and build his reputation. The Sirst part of the thesis explores how James writes about Italian culture in his Sirst tales in ways with which his audience would be familiar, in order to cultiVate his readership. The Sirst three chapters deal with ‘TraVelling Companions’ (1870), ‘At Isella’ (1871), and ‘The Madonna of the Future’ (1873) respectiVely. Looking at how magazines represent contemporary debates about the Italian artists and works of art that James depicts, I study the way James draws on this context to !emphasise the relationship between culture and character in his Siction. The second half examines his Siction after 1873 in the light of James’ sense of his emerging literary reputation. Aware of his growing fame, James began to write tales incorporating material from his own serialised traVel writing, thus reinforcing his reputation as a writer about Italy. -

Tlleirs was a brief encounter, lasting less than three years, much of which was spent apart. Nevertheless, out of this intensive. conjunction. spurted flames, somewhat lurid, but rendered invisible by the exaggerated reticences of that era. Paul courted Elizab:eth, took her on a trip· to Europle, married her, and then died, leaving her their daughter. Mrs. Akers was widely eommiserated on the premature loss of her popular, talented husband and she said nothing at the time to undermine the public estimate of Paul as an incandescent child of nature, guileless and gracious and good. -

When Miss Elizabeth Palmer Peabody referred to a local person as “our High Priest of Nature,” it was not Henry Thoreau to whom she was referring, but Jones Very. It is true that the term “Nature” was at that time, as it is now, associated with going on an excursion in the country (despite the fact that such an excursion was then termed a “pic nic” rather than a “picnic”), but primarily the term “Nature” was in use during this period as a trope for the investigation of theology without the opening of authoritative books. And it was Very, not Thoreau, who was the reigning local expert at this type of mystic spirituality. When Miss Elizabeth Palmer Peabody at one point suggested to Margaret Fuller that she might write for the Democratic Review. Fuller responded, in a letter: “Are they good pay (for I have heard the contrary) - ? The United States is the only country in the world where voters elect prosecutors. But the American prosecutor did not start as an elected official. After the Revolutionary War, most states gave their governors, judges, or legislators the power to appoint prosecutors. Starting with Mississippi in 1832, however, states adopted new constitutions, statutes, or amendments that made prosecutors elected officials. By 1861, nearly three-quarters of the states in the Union elected their prosecutors. This Note is the first detailed study of when, how, and why American state and local prosecutors became elected officials. It shows that fairness and efficiency concerns were largely absent from the debates over whether to make prosecutors elected. Instead, supporters of elected prosecutors were responding to governors and legislators who used the appointment system for political patronage. As prosecutors gained discretionary power over criminal prosecutions, mid- nineteenth-century political reformers believed it was crucial to remove prosecutors from partisan politics. Many also hoped elected prosecutors would be more accountable to the voters and the local communities they served.
