A Tradition of Excellence: Established in 1901, the WSU School of Music has long been recognized for excellence in undergraduate and graduate studies in music. Students study with an internationally recognized faculty, and in Kimbrough Music Building have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including an in-house professional-quality recording and electronic music studio, an extensive listening and score library, and concert, recital, and rehearsal spaces for large and small ensembles. In addition, the School of Music utilizes excellent stage facilities in Bryan Hall, including an 800-seat concert hall, a production shop, piano and instrumental repair shops, and a three manual, 44-rank Schantz pipe organ.

The School of Music offers a master of arts in music, bachelor of music degrees in music education, performance, composition, and performance with an emphasis in jazz, a bachelor of arts in music, a music minor, and a jazz minor. WSU ensembles have performed around the world and are regularly invited to perform at prestigious concert venues and conferences across the country. The director of the School of Music is Dr. Gregory W. Yasinitsky.

Programs in composition: WSU's School of Music offers the BM degree in composition and a MA degree with a composition emphasis. Graduates of the composition program have gone on to complete graduate degrees at such prestigious institutions as the Peabody Conservatory, the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, , the Florida State University College of Music, and the Hartt School of Music, to name a few. Alumni have also won numerous national and international prizes, are frequently published, have seen their works competitively selected for performances at numerous national and international conferences, and have been placed in tenure-track positions at major universities.

The Festival of Contemporary Art Music enables the students and faculty at WSU to interact face-to-face with distinguished living composers as well as performers who specialize in new music. Founded in 1989 by Charles Argersinger, the Festival is deemed important by the music faculty and students, as well as the university, for its promotion of the art music of our time and the composers who create it. Works by student composers and faculty composers are highlighted along with those of the visiting composer, and, this year, a visiting ensemble. The current director of the Festival is Ryan M. Hare.

The 2017 Festival of Contemporary Art Music is made possible through generous support from the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Music at Washington State University, Allegro, and the Society of Composers, Inc. Festival of Contemporary Art Music Guest Composers, 1989-2017
