För tävlingskommittén Kjell Persson Ordförande Skånes Badmintonförbund We welcome all the players, coaches and officials to International Skånska Ungdomsspelen in Malmoe. A year has passed and it is time for the year 2002 International Skånska Ungdomsspelen. Even this year we are pleased to announce that we are one of nine tournaments in the European Junior Badminton Circuit for U19. We have got B-status and hope soon to have A-status. To get this status for our tournament is a confirmation that we have the right concept and arrange an excellent tournament. This motivates us to work even harder to improve the tournament. Nothing is so good that it can't be improved. This year we have to go back to play 3 set to 11 and 15. We are pleased to welcome players from Denmark, England, Estonia, Germany Norway, Czech and of course all the Swedish players. Our hopes are that this year's competition as previous ones will offer players and coaches a good competition and that the competition will be played in good spirits and fellowship. For the tournament committee Kjell Persson Chairman Skånska Badminton Association SKÅNES BADMINTON ASSOCIATION Sum up - best players We are very pleased with the tournament 2002. There were a lot of hard fights on the courts but still the atmosphere was friendly and nice. The timetable was good and there were no delays despite the "new" counting rules. Everything went smoothly. And we got a lot of good credits which always are nice to hear after hard preparations and a long weekends hard work. Best club in the individual tournament was England followed by Aura from Skåne and Danish Badminton Association. Congratulations! Best individual male player was Magnus Sahlberg, Askim BC scoring 9 points followed by 6 players with 8 points. Best individual female player was Jennifer Wallwork, England scoring 12 points with Emelie Lennartsson, BK Carlskrona ending in second place with 10 points and Line Kruse, Danish Badminton Association on third place with 9 points. Congratulations! See the total scoringlist on page 6 and 7. Asians next year We had invited 2 top players from Indonesia this year but only 2 weeks before the tournament we got the message that they couldn't come. That was disturbing because Malmö Stad - the community - had sponsored us in this plan to invite Asians. But we will not let us down. To the tournament 2003 we have plans to invite a hole U19-national team with 5 or 6 players from China or Malaysia instead. We hope that all the very best European players will take this great opportunity to see and meet probably the best U19-players in the world. We have the financial support of Malmö Stad and we look forward to next years tournament. Thank you and welcome back 12-14 september 2003. • History of Badminton
Facts and Records History of Badminton In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort held a lawn party at his country house in the village of Badminton, Gloucestershire. A game of Poona was played on that day and became popular among British society’s elite. The new party sport became known as “the Badminton game”. In 1877, the Bath Badminton Club was formed and developed the first official set of rules. The Badminton Association was formed at a meeting in Southsea on 13th September 1893. It was the first National Association in the world and framed the rules for the Association and for the game. The popularity of the sport increased rapidly with 300 clubs being introduced by the 1920’s. Rising to 9,000 shortly after World War Π. The International Badminton Federation (IBF) was formed in 1934 with nine founding members: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand and France and as a consequence the Badminton Association became the Badminton Association of England. From nine founding members, the IBF, now called the Badminton World Federation (BWF), has over 160 member countries. The future of Badminton looks bright. Badminton was officially granted Olympic status in the 1992 Barcelona Games. Indonesia was the dominant force in that first Olympic tournament, winning two golds, a silver and a bronze; the country’s first Olympic medals in its history. More than 1.1 billion people watched the 1992 Olympic Badminton competition on television. Eight years later, and more than a century after introducing Badminton to the world, Britain claimed their first medal in the Olympics when Simon Archer and Jo Goode achieved Mixed Doubles Bronze in Sydney.
