FREE ADMISSION Dear friends, Last fall, Third Coast Baroque’s debut series ¡Sarabanda! focused on examining the African and Latin American folk music roots of the sarabande. Today, we will be following the paths of the chaconne, passacaglia and other ostinato rhythms – with origins similar to the sarabande – as they spread across Europe during the 17th century. With this program that we are calling Groove!, we present those intoxicating rhythms in the fashion and flavor of the different countries where they gained popularity. The great European composers wrote masterpieces using the rhythms of these ancient dances to create immortal pieces of art, but their weight and significance is such that we tend to forget where their origins lie. Bach, Couperin, and Purcell – to name only a few – wrote music for highly sophisticated institutions. Still, through these dance rhythms, they were searching for something similar to what the more ancient civilizations had been striving to attain: a connection to the spiritual world. -

SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE PFINGSTEN Künstlerische Leitung: Cecilia Bartoli La couleur du temps – The Colour of Time Pauline Viardot-Garcia (1821 – 1910) Photo: Uli Weber - Decca Salzburg Whitsun Festival 29 May – 1 June 2020 (SF, 30 December 2019) The life of Pauline Viardot-Garcia – singer, musical ambassador of Europe, outstanding pianist and composer – is the focus of the 2020 programme of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival. “The uncanny instinct Cecilia Bartoli has for the themes of our times is proven once again by her programme for the 2020 Salzburg Whitsun Festival, which focuses on Pauline Viardot. Orlando Figes has just written a bestseller about this woman. Using Viardot as an example, he describes the importance of art within the idea of Europe,” says Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler. 1 SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE PFINGSTEN Künstlerische Leitung: Cecilia Bartoli Pauline Viardot not only made a name for herself as a singer, composer and pianist, but her happy marriage with the French theatre manager, author and art critic Louis Viardot furthered her career and enabled her to act as a great patron of the arts. Thus, she made unique efforts to save the autograph of Mozart’s Don Giovanni for posterity. Don Giovanni was among the manuscripts Constanze Mozart had sold to Johann Anton André in Offenbach in 1799. After his death in 1842, his daughter inherited the autograph and offered it to libraries in Vienna, Berlin and London – without success. In 1855 her cousin, the pianist Ernst Pauer, took out an advertisement in the London-based journal Musical World. Thereupon, Pauline Viardot-García bought the manuscript for 180 pounds. -

Obtained and translated for CWIHP by Malgorzata K. Gnoinska. http://digitalarchive.wilsoncenter.org/document/113673 Summary: Nowak reports on how the Chinese are using anti-Soviet propaganda at home and abroad to undermine Soviet influence and encourage possible coups. He notes that this is especially seen in Sino-Japanese relations and recent visits by Japanese politicians to China. Original Language: Polish Contents: English Translation Secret Telegram No. 901 From Moscow to Warsaw, January 21, 1974 Szyszko From Kowalczyk's conversation with the Deputy Director in the Far Eastern Department of Foreign Ministry – Dubrovsky 1. Recently, the Soviets have been increasingly following China's international activities. Its nature is becoming brutally anti-Soviet. [Chinese] are increasingly trying to involve various elements and centers in the capitalist countries, as well as those of the Third World. This is taking place in the U.S., Japan, and the FRG. The Chinese are reactivating the activities of pro-Chinese groupings in the communist and workers' movement (the latest example is the FRG). The main task of these groupings is to currently strengthen socialist elements in these countries and to bring about an internal coup, while at the same time to undermine the position of the Soviet Union and the CPSU. According to Dubrovsy, the Chinese are outright assuring the governments in some of these capitalist countries that these Maoist groupings will be loyal to the authorities and are not directed against them. -
Immigrant Musicians on the New York Jazz Scene by Ofer Gazit A
Sounds Like Home: Immigrant Musicians on the New York Jazz Scene By Ofer Gazit A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Benjamin Brinner, Chair Professor Jocelyne Guilbault Professor George Lewis Professor Scott Saul Summer 2016 Abstract Sounds Like Home: Immigrant Musicians On the New York Jazz Scene By Ofer Gazit Doctor of Philosophy in Music University of California, Berkeley Professor Benjamin Brinner, Chair At a time of mass migration and growing xenophobia, what can we learn about the reception, incorporation, and alienation of immigrants in American society from listening to the ways they perform jazz, the ‘national music’ of their new host country? Ethnographies of contemporary migrations emphasize the palpable presence of national borders and social boundaries in the everyday life of immigrants. Ethnomusicological literature on migrant and border musics has focused primarily on the role of music in evoking a sense of home and expressing group identity and solidarity in the face of assimilation. In jazz scholarship, the articulation and crossing of genre boundaries has been tied to jazz as a symbol of national cultural identity, both in the U.S and in jazz scenes around the world. While these works cover important aspects of the relationship between nationalism, immigration and music, the role of jazz in facilitating the crossing of national borders and blurring social boundaries between immigrant and native-born musicians in the U.S. has received relatively little attention to date. -

Consciousness and Revolution in Soviet Philosophy
CONSCIOUSNESS AND REVOLUTION IN SOVIET PHILOSOPHY This is the first critical history of the philosophical culture of the USSR, and the first substantial treatment of a modern Sovi- et philosopher's work by a Western author. The book identi- fies a significant tradition within Soviet Marxism that has pro- duced powerful theories exploring the origins of meaning and value, the relation of thought and language, and the nature of the self. The tradition is presented through the work of Evald Ilyen- kov (1924—79), the thinker who did most to rejuvenate Soviet philosophy after its suppression under Stalin. Professor Bak- hurst sets Ilyenkov's contribution against the background of the bitter debates that divided Soviet philosophers in the 1920s, the "sociohistorical psychology" of Vygotsky, the controver- sies over Lenin's legacy, and the philosophy of Stalinism. He traces Ilyenkov's tense relationship with the Soviet philosophi- cal establishment and his passionate polemics with Soviet op- ponents. This book offers a unique insight into the world of Soviet philosophy, the place of politics within it, and its prospects in the age of glasnost' and perestrdka.
