FIRST DEFIBRILLATOR NOW AVAILABLE TO VILLAGE 24 HOURS A DAY

The Defibrillator that has been at the JGI for the past 4 ½ years is now in a secure box on the front of the Hall. It is available to anyone who has an emergency and requires a defibrillator before the ambulance arrives. It can save lives.

It is fully automatic and except for applying the pads to the patient’s chest as described the machine will talk to you and tell you exactly what to do.

If you are ever unfortunate to require it then at arrival at the Hall dial 999 and tell the operator where you are and information will be given to unlock the cabinet to obtain the defibrillator.

Further to this the Ambulance Service will hold an information and training evening at the JGI on Tuesday 30th October at 7pm. It is open to all, so come along (Please see page 24 for more details).

YOU COULD SAVE THE LIFE OF A LOVED ONE.

OLD STYLE CHURCH FETE 2018 What a great day we had for the Old-Style Church Fete on Saturday 25th August. The sun shone and a lot of people enjoyed all the usual attractions of home-made cakes with refreshments, the BBQ and the fun activities. We had donkey rides on the lawn, a fire engine at the front gate, “Dusty” the vintage tractor, a cherished Morris Minor and two well-polished motorbikes to inspect, as well as plants and crafts, accessories, and bric-a-brac, a raffle, a tombola and games to play. As you will no doubt see from the photos of the event, Rosie our Rector got soaked in the stocks too, adding a little to the day’s total! This year we introduced a fun dog show and we are grateful to Dawn Fenton and Jayne Morris for all the hard work they put in to make it a success; it was fun, indeed. A big thank you too to everyone who came to support us, and those who worked so hard on the stalls. For those of you who are interested in the results of the competitions: Guess the weight of the Cake: won by Harley with a guess of 5lb 7oz How many sweets in the jar: won by Emily with a guess of 162 How many dog biscuits in the tub: won by Shirley B with a guess of 432 Bowling for the pig (well, a joint of pork) was won by Derek Mill with the highest (adult) score of 19. NANA PAULINE’S COCONUT PYRAMIDS Sonia Shephard

Nana Polly was my mum, who sadly passed away at the age of 58. She only knew one of her grandsons for a brief 5 months, but I know if she hadn’t have left the family so prematurely she would have made these Coconut Pyramids with my children as she did with me.

They are low fat treats that are so easy to make, even a child could make them!

Ingredients: 2 cups of desiccated coconut, 1 cup of caster sugar. 2 egg whites

Method: Pre heat oven to gas mark 3, electric 350c or 180f. Put all the ingredients into a bowl and stir. (Pic 2). Grease and line a large baking sheet. Now here comes the tricky bit! You will need a bowl of cold water and an eggcup. Dip the eggcup in the cold water and empty. Dip the egg cup in the coconut mixture and fill to the brim, pushing down with the back of a spoon. (Pic 3). Knock the eggcup on the sides with the heel of your hand to release the filling then turn upside down onto the baking sheet. Should just drop out. (Pic 4) Repeat until all mixture is used. (Pic 5) Bake for approximately 15 – 20 mins so that the tops are just going brown. If you wanted too you could pretty them up with a piece of glace cherry before putting into the oven. Yummy, Enjoy!!!! (Pic 6)

Clinical checks and medicines optimisation: One of the key skills of a pharmacist is to perform a clinical assessment or clinical check for the medicines that are being dispensed to patients. The contact that community pharmacists have with patients allows them to champion a person centred approach. Medicines optimisation comes about from this approach and helps the patient get the best possible outcomes from the medicines that the doctor has prescribed. By focusing on the individual patient- their beliefs, experiences, etc, they are empowered to take their medicines correctly, improve adherence, avoid unnecessary medication, reduce medicine wastage and improve patient safety. When a pharmacist does a clinical and legal check of a prescription, these basic points are covered.

Medicines Use Reviews (MUR): The MUR service is a structured review that is undertaken by a pharmacist to help patients manage their medication more effectively. The MUR involves the pharmacist reviewing the patient’s use of medication, once a year ensuring they understand how their medicines should be use and why they have been prescribed. Any problems are identified through this process and when necessary, feedback can be provided to the prescriber.

New Medicines Service (NMS): The New Medicines Service provides support for people with long term conditions (asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, treatment involving anti-coagulant drugs). The aim of this service is to improve medicines adherence, achieve better health outcomes, reduce medicines wastage and reduce avoidable hospital admissions due to adverse events related to the medicines.

NHS Flu vaccination service: This is provided by community pharmacies to sustain and maximise the uptake of flu vaccine in at risk groups. Particular emphasis is placed on vaccinating eligible patients between the 1st of September and 31st of January. The at risk groups are those with chronic respiratory, heart, kidney, liver or neurological

DOWN THE GARDEN PATH DUNCAN COMPLETES ‘THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE’

Due to this year’s difficult growing con- On the weekend of 1st of September myself and twenty members ditions many of us have lost some of of the Sherringham based Hilltop Outdoor Centre took on the ‘Three our most loved plants and now that the Peaks Challenge’ climbing the three highest mountains in the UK weather has returned to normal (what- ever that is!) there are bare patches to fill or bare earth to look at. However, this is a great time to plant ornamental grasses especially if you are able to sit back later and look at them from a warm lounge or conservatory admiring their colourful stems and the frosted grasses. Cut back ornamental grasses to the ground in spring, as well as protecting the roots from frost the soaring, spiky, and arching fronds, will bring waving life to borders during winter. Leaf colours include reddish-green, yellow, blue-grey, bronze and bright green. Some have cross banding or stripes and nearly all have difficult Latin names. Here are a few to be recommended. Blue grass Festuca glauca, Imperata Red Baron, Carex Everest, Miscanthus sinensis Zebrinus.

Instead of letting window boxes and containers stand empty, plant them up with evergreens. The conifer Gold Crest is a good choice very slow growing it can be moved to the garden when it gets too big. It will look good when planted with winter flowering pansies and mini cycla- men. Alpines plants too look well in concrete containers. They will survive cold but not the wet so make sure that the container is well drained. Lift tender plants, like dahlias, non hardy fuchsias and gladioli before penetrating frosts can reach them. Biennials for spring flower- ing such as forget-me-nots and wallflowers should be planted as soon as possible. Follow the advice on the seed packet or plant label with regard to spacing. The more compact varieties are usually planted closer together. Allow extra space if you want to interplant with bulbs such as tulips or hyacinths.

Now is the best time to plant evergreens especially Rhododendrons. Water the plant about half an hour before planting. Dig the site and work in compost or manure. Excavate a hole large enough to take the root-ball, and place the plant in the hole, still in its pot, to check the depth. This can be done by placing a cane across the soil and hole making sure it is even. Tease out the roots of the plants and replace the soil around its roots. Firm in well with your feet. Water thoroughly, then apply a mulch of bark, peat or ericaceous compost. Keep out of in three days. We did this to raise money for Nelsons Journey a direct contact of the stem. Protect the young plant if planted in a windy great Norfolk based charity that supports bereaved children in the area by making a wind shield by fixing several layers of fine mesh county and is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. We set of netting or a sheet of polythene round four canes, but leave the top on the Saturday to Scotland and on Sunday we climbed Ben Nevis open. Enjoy your garden. the highest mountain in the . As soon as we made it up and down it was time to drive to and the Lake District to climb Scafell Pike the next day. This was followed by a glorious sunny climb in Wales on Tuesday of Mount Snowdon which gave us breathtaking views as the clouds lifted above the summit. A lot of traveling, a lot of walking and climbing along with a little sleep to fit in as well. The photograph shows me at the top of Ben Nevis holding a copy of ‘Village Voice’. I would like to thank everyone who supported us on this challenge we think that as a team we will reach the £4000 mark. Anybody interested in sponsoring me please call on 01493 780418.
