By: Jared Diamond- The Wall Street Journal Pittsburgh In today’s data-driven, power-centric version of baseball, starting pitchers tend to follow a similar formula: They throw as hard as they can for as long as they can, racking up strikeouts until they reach the 100-pitch mark, usually around the sixth inning or so. The days of one man owning the mound for 27 outs ended long ago. But it seems Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Ivan Nova never received that message. Upon arriving here in a trade with the New York Yankees last August, he has emerged as the ultimate throwback, dominating opposing lineups in a manner hardly seen for decades. In his first 15 outings for Pittsburgh, Nova completed four, more than anyone else during that span. Even more improbable, in 91 2/3 innings of work, he has issued just four total walks. That means when Nova pitches, he is equally likely to go the distance as he is to miss the strike zone four times to a given batter. “A lot of guys like to strike out everybody,” said Nova, who is scheduled to start Saturday night in Miami. “I like seeing all those ground balls and quick outs.     Indianapolis Indians: Job Description Job Title: Seasonal Assistant Groundskeeper Status: Seasonal Reports To: Director of Grounds FLSA: Non-Exempt Department: Operations Effective: March 1 – Sept 31, 2018 Job Summary: Assist the Indianapolis Indians Grounds Department by being responsible for repairing and maintaining the Victory Field playing surface as a safe, first class baseball field. Performing daily turf, dirt and water management; timely fertility and cultural practices; game preparation techniques and also assist in the short and long-term maintenance & budgeting. This position will play a vital role in home plate preparation, planning, and repair and assist with scheduling and supervising our grounds staff. Learn to incorporate weather station and soil moisture sensor technology into daily turf management practices. Essential Functions: • Assist in daily planning, supervising, & execution of the Indians Grounds Department • Supervise, schedule, mentor and train a seasonal intern and part-time game day staff • Specific duties shall include, but not be limited to: • Clay work including infield skin, mounds, homeplates, and warning track • Turf work including fertilizer and pesticide application, mowing, and edging • All cultural practices including mowing, irrigation, aerification, topdressing, deep tine, slicing, etc. • Basic equipment maintenance • Irrigation scheduling and repair • Wear management • Tarp handling and weather situations • Continuing education opportunities available throughout season Other Duties/Responsibilities: • Assist with all extra events which may include baseball events, softball games, Football, corporate events, and concerts • Inventory management • Outside landscaping and irrigation repair • Participate in additional professional education • Track, monitor, and record all maintenance practices and applications • Other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications: Candidate must be recently graduated from a two or four-year turfgrass or horticultural program at the university level.
