PITCHING MATCHUP RHP Carlos Hernandez (4-3, 4.31 ERA) vs. LHP Domingo Robles (6-4, 3.20 ERA) Hernandez: Currently 2-0 with a 4.91 ERA in three starts against the Power in 2018 Robles: Leads the Power with eight quality outings over a team-high 15 starts HAILING AT TWILIGHT’S LAST GLEAMING: Calvin Mitchell’s three-run homer headlined a five-run seventh LAST HOMESTAND (6/24-29) inning for West Virginia, lifting the Power to an 8-3 win over the Hagerstown Suns in the series finale Tuesday evening at Historic Municipal Stadium. The Power plated their first R: 16 run in the third on Macias’ RBI single to left, cutting the then-deficit in half at 2-1. West Virginia would tie the ballgame HR: 2 BB: 15 at three in the sixth with a pair of runs on Ben Bengtson’s run-scoring single and a bases-loaded walk to Watson. SO: 45 SB: 7 BROAD STRIPES, BRIGHT STARS: With his seventh-inning single Tuesday, Sanchez extended his on-base streak Pitching/Defensive Statistics: to 11 games. Sanchez’s streak dates back to June 21, the first day of the second half. During this span, Sanchez is W-L: 3-2 averaging .353 (12-for-34) with a home run, seven RBI and a .950 OPS. The Dominican native has a new career-high ERA: 2.63 in stolen bases after swiping 14 bags a year ago with the GCL Pirates. His 16 stolen bases are tied for sixth-best in the Quality Starts: 3 South Atlantic League. Over 161 career MiLB games, Sanchez has 34 stolen bases in 56 tries (61 percent success rate). IP: 41.0 H: 35 R: 12 FIREWORKS: Mitchell crushed his eighth home run of the season Tuesday, second-most on the team to Cruz (10). ER: 12 He had not homered since June 1 at Greensboro. The Rancho Bernardo High School product also tallied his 20th Saves/Opportunities: 3/4 multi-hit game and eighth multi-RBI effort of the season, both sitting behind just Cruz for most on the team (24 multi- BB: 16 hit games, 12 multi-RBI contests). Mitchell recorded his fifth game with three RBI or more in his professional career. SO: 37 HR: 2 BOMBS BURSTING IN AIR: Mitchell’s homer was West Virginia’s 58th of the season, tied with Lakewood for Errors: 2 sixth-most in the South Atlantic League. Only Asheville (87), Lexington (85), Hickory (70), Augusta (62) and Delmarva (59) have more homers than the Power and BlueClaws in 2018. Every active Power batter has at least one home run 2018 VS. Robles retired the last 11 men he faced in Friday’s outing. By: Jared Diamond- The Wall Street Journal Pittsburgh In today’s data-driven, power-centric version of baseball, starting pitchers tend to follow a similar formula: They throw as hard as they can for as long as they can, racking up strikeouts until they reach the 100-pitch mark, usually around the sixth inning or so. The days of one man owning the mound for 27 outs ended long ago. But it seems Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Ivan Nova never received that message. Upon arriving here in a trade with the New York Yankees last August, he has emerged as the ultimate throwback, dominating opposing lineups in a manner hardly seen for decades. In his first 15 outings for Pittsburgh, Nova completed four, more than anyone else during that span. Even more improbable, in 91 2/3 innings of work, he has issued just four total walks. That means when Nova pitches, he is equally likely to go the distance as he is to miss the strike zone four times to a given batter. “A lot of guys like to strike out everybody,” said Nova, who is scheduled to start Saturday night in Miami. “I like seeing all those ground balls and quick outs. It makes me more happy than getting 10 strikeouts.” Nova’s unexpected resurgence marks yet another successful reclamation project for the Pirates, who, under the tutelage of pitching coach Ray Searage, have reached the playoffs in three of the past four years.
