HERBERT’S SONGS: DESIGNED FOR CLASSICAL SINGERS A CREATIVE PROJECT PAPER SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENT FOR THE DEGREE MASTERS OF MUSIC BY LAURA R. KRELL DR. MEI ZHONG-ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA JULY, 2012 Herbert’s Songs: Designed for Classical Singers Introduction Victor Herbert has undoubtedly provided America some of its greatest, most tender, romantic, invigorating, and challenging songs for soprano. Today, Herbert’s masterworks appear simultaneously in both Musical Theater Anthologies and Operatic Collections. Many students encounter questions as to performance practice: can these songs be sung as “musical theater,” with young, immature voices, or should they be studied by classical singers? Despite the pool of speculation swirling around this issue, there has not been any significant research on this particular topic. This study will detail the vocal abilities of Herbert’s most prolific sopranos (Alice Nielsen, Fritzi Scheff, and Emma Trentini), and identify compositional elements of three of Herbert’s most famous arias (“The Song of the Danube,” “Kiss Me Again,” and “Italian Street Song”), using historical data to demonstrate that each composition was tailored specifically for the versatility and profound vocal ability of each opera singer, and is poorly mishandled by those without proper classical training. The writer will offer observations from three amateur online recordings of “Art Is Calling For Me.” The writer will use the recordings to highlight specific pitfalls untrained singers may encounter while singing Herbert, such as maneuvering coloratura passages, breath control, singing large intervallic leaps, and the repeated use of the upper tessitura.

VOCAL 78 rpm Discs Minimum bid as indicated per item. Listings “Just about 1-2” should be considered as mint and “Cons. 2” with just slight marks. For collectors searching top copies, you’ve come to the right place! The further we get from the era of production (in many cases now 100 years or more), the more difficult it is to find such excellent extant pressings. Some are actually from mint dealer stocks and others the result of having improved copies via dozens of collections purchased over the past fifty years. * * * For those looking for the best sound via modern reproduction, those items marked “late” are usually of high quality shellac, pressed in the 1950-55 period. A number of items in this particular catalogue are excellent pressings from that era. Also featured are many “Z” shellac Victors, their best quality surface material (later 1930s) and PW (Pre-War) Victor, almost as good surface material as “Z”. Likewise laminated Columbia pressings (1923- 1940) offer particularly fine sound. * * * Please keep in mind that the minimum bids are in U.S. Dollars, a benefit to most collectors. * * * “Text label on verso.” For a brief period (1912-‘14), Victor pressed silver-on-black labels on the reverse sides of some of their single-faced recordings, usually featuring translations of the text or similarly related comments. VERTICALLY CUT RECORDS. There were basically two systems, the “needle-cut” method employed by Edison, which was also used by Aeolian-Vocalion and Lyric and the “sapphire ball” system of Pathé, also used by Rex. and vertical Okeh.

“Dream Melody Intermezzo: Naughty Marietta”-- Victor Herbert and His Orchestra (1911) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Alyce Mott (guest post)* Victor Herbert Arthur Hammerstein Oscar Hammerstein I A Masterpiece Arises Victor Herbert’s 1910 “Naughty Marietta,” America’s finest operetta, contains the most famous 16-measure melody ever written by an American composer, “Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life.” That song was first available to the public as sheet music and then on a very early recording device: an Edison Blue Amberol Cylinder No. 1775, under the title, “Dream Melody Intermezzo,” recorded by The Victor Herbert Orchestra, under the baton of Herbert; it was made in January, 1911. The original of this American recording treasure is included in the National Recording Registry. The work is labeled an “intermezzo,” meaning “in the middle,” which refers to any composition which fits between other musical or dramatic entities, such as acts of a play, an opera or an operetta. It is normally a light instrumental composition and is complete, allowing it to stand alone. In the operetta “Naughty Marietta,” set in New Orleans in 1780, this intermezzo was used to cover the set change from the Act II, Scene 1, scenery of the Marionette Theatre, to the Act II, Scene II, scenery of the Jeunesse Dorée Club. The work lasts approximately 4:09 minutes. It is the only time during the operetta that the entire melody is heard before the Finale Ultimo. The music weaves throughout the entire operetta as Marietta struggles to find someone to finish the melody she hears in her mind.
