EPIA (2012 – 2014) 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Grundtvig Learning Partnership 'Exchanging Best Practices in the Integration of Assyrians in Europe' (EPIA) has aimed to exchange experiences of Assyrians in the field of integration in Europe, map problems and challenges, and promote best practices. The partners represented institutions of Assyrians in four different European countries (NL, SE, DE, BE). Since the 1960s, Assyrians have emigrated and established themselves in large numbers (about 300.000) in Europe. Already from the beginning their journey to Europe was a 'one-way ticket'; they burned their ships behind them to establish themselves for good in Europe. To a great extent, this first intention has influenced the way they have oriented and established themselves in Europe. Nevertheless, integration into modern Western societies led to a comprehensive societal transformation, and introduced new problems and challenges for the group. This partnership project has aimed to evaluate the 50-years of settlement of Assyrians in Europe, develop more insight in the processes of the integration, to exchange experienced problem and challenges, and to map best practices in the field of integration. In order to realize the envisaged aims and objectives, the project has focused on educational activities. Three seminars, two workshops and a conference were organized in partner countries during the lifetime of the project. These are: - Promoting Active Citizenship: Upward Mobility of Assyrians in Europe (Seminar, Gothenburg) - An Intergenerational Approach to the Problems and Challenges of the Integration of Assyrians (Seminar, Augsburg) - Linguistic Diversity, Mother Tongue and Integration: The case of Surayt (Seminar, Liege) - The Integration and Empowerment of Assyrian Women in Europe (Workshop, Gothenburg) - Second Generation and Integration (Workshop, Hengelo) - Assyrian Diaspora in Europe: Past, Present, Future (Conference, Berlin) The planned activities realized successfully, and attracted in total more than 500 participants (learners, public audience). Furthermore, all events were broadcast on Assyria TV and disseminated further to a broader public worldwide. Moreover, various articles were written about the project in local/national newspapers and internet magazines. Furthermore, all activity reports and selected presentations were collected in a final report which is available on the project partners' websites as an open educational resource. 2 Some of the main conclusions of the aforementioned partnership activities: - Education plays an essential role in upward mobility by giving opportunities for individuals to change their path within the broader society. - 'Learning links' between generations do not function properly; this prevents a respectful and fruitful interaction between generations. - Intergenerational tensions are based upon the fear of assimilation and thus disappearance. The re-production of this fear paves the way for the inward-looking attitudes and tensions between parents and their children. - Among second generation who have grown up in European societies, gender equality has become a more central value. They do not differ so much from their native peers with regards to norms and values. - Assyrian women underwent a big transformation process after settlement in Europe. The change in the position of Assyrian women is very remarkable. However, they still face structural discrimination. - Bilingual children who can speak their mother tongue become more successful in school where their mother tongue functions as an asset for their personal and cultural development. The learning of the mother tongue is one of the most important points for successful integration. - Assyrians across generations have experienced a big transformation process; their norms and values have changed. They have accepted or incorporated many Western values and norms, but also kept their traditional norms and values, yet in a different context. - Second generation Assyrians perceives the European countries where they were born as their ‘home’, and they have all established themselves well. * * * This report consists of a short profiling of partner organizations, chronicle reports and articles published on the various activities. In few cases, activity reports other than in English language are included in order to demonstrate the linguistic diversity of the partnership. In the annex, the reader can find some of the speeches given during the partnership activities and activity posters. We are thankful to the Assyria TV for their cooperation in this project. This young but ambitious foundation is an independent, non-profit organization. Inanna Foundation aims to contribute to the educational, social, cultural and political development of Assyrians/Syriacs worldwide, with a special emphasis on those in Europe. Therefore, the goal of the Inanna Foundation is to foster the social inclusion and democratic participation of Assyrians/Syriacs in the countries in which they live. Accordingly, it promotes active citizenship among the target group both in their homeland(s) and in the Diaspora. Therefore our aim is to raise their representation on educational, social, political and institutional levels so as to make their voice heard and make them visible as a group. In these endeavours, our point of departure is the idea that this minority group needs to build up durable, productive institutions in all fields of life. Another aim of the Inanna Foundation is the empowerment of Assyrian/Syriac women so as to stimulate their development, participation in and contribution to society. We are endeavouring to realize these aims by means of educational and cultural activities and involvement. Our efforts primarily take the form of raising awareness of topics and situations which should be brought to the attention of the people, by means of innovative approaches and practices. In 2011, Inanna Foundation organized the Grundtvig workshop 'An Intergenerational Approach to the Study of Genocide' (Registration No. 2010-1-NL1-GRU13-02946) in Rijssen, The Netherlands (June 10-16).     Anglican–Oriental Orthodox International Commission Communiqué 2018 The Anglican–Oriental Orthodox International Commission held its seventh meeting from 22–26 October 2018 at the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchal Residence, Atchaneh, Lebanon. The Commission greatly appreciated the generous hospitality of His Holiness Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, and the kindness of the sisters of the Mor Jacob Baradeus Convent, and all those assisting His Holiness. The Commission noted with deep sadness the recent passing of one of its founder-members and its former Oriental Orthodox Co-Chair, His Eminence Metropolitan Bishoy of Damietta. The Commission gave thanks for his contribution to Anglican–Oriental Orthodox relations, and for his leadership in the ecumenical movement. The Commission offered prayers for the repose of his soul, and continues to hold his diocese in its prayers. The Procession and Work of the Holy Spirit, the agreed statement of the 2017 meeting of the Commission, was published in October 2018. It is dedicated to Metropolitan Bishoy, ‘monk, bishop, theologian, champion of the Orthodox faith and unity of the Church’. But the promises of a great unified Arab State, of a Kurdish State, of an Armenian State and of an Assyrian State were patently irreconciliable. The division of the Ottoman Kurdistan removed the protection of autochthonous communities (Armenians, Assyro-Chaldeans, Kurds and Yezidis) so that they became the internal problem of Iraq, Syria and Turkey. These peoples have consequently become transnational. Dispersed through various Middle Eastern States, they have been forced to create different policies, and to pursue different objectives. The passage from multinational identity has had dramatic consequences for each of these people, whereas the Arab and Turkish States pursued a nationalistic policy aimed at creating a new identity for the whole population. The available documentation in the archives of the Ministry of Italian Foreign Affairs enables a broader and deeper understanding of the tensions and problems, with special reference to Iraq. Nonetheless, these diplomatic observateurs are interesting because they create the atmosphere of this historical period. Italian politics seemed to agree to the rigid application of the Lausanne Treaty and the maintaining of the status quo. Fascism follows a pro-Arab strategy which leaves no room for developing a strategy toward the Middle Eastern communities. A section is devoted to the Syrian Jazira that, being at the Turkish and Iraqi border, represented an important observation post to follow the Kurdish and Assyro-Chaldean problems in those years.

    SYRIAC SACRED CHANT: IT’S ROLE IN SHAPING LITURGICAL LIFE AND COMMUNAL IDENTITY OF THE SYRIAC COMMUNITY By Gabriel Aydin So outstanding is the nature of Syriac sacred music—when the sacred word (text) is fused with the sound (music) creates an extra ordinary power through which the faithful can attain their spiritual goals and lift themselves up from the ordinary to the higher level of consciousness— that the Syriac poet-theologians and hymnographers chose this phenomenon 1600 years ago to knit their prose and poetry that laid the foundation of Syriac rich musical heritage. Their hymns give not only religious reference to and offers a strong view of the liturgical rite and faith of the Syriac church, but also forms an important part of the Syriac both religious and cultural identity, ideology, symbols, moral values, and the collective cultural memory of Syriac Christians. A very short overview of the Syriac chant will promote our understanding as well as the significance of this musical phenomenon. Syriac sacred chant, is one of the oldest existing chant traditions (similar to the western tradition of plainsong), composed in Syriac, a dialect of Aramaic, the language that was spoken by Jesus Christ, together with their melodies. Among the large number of distinct features that are embedded in Syriac sacred chant, a) simplicity in text and melody (so that the theological reasoning that lays behind the text would be easily comprehended by diverse communities, simple worshippers and monastics to embrace the Word of God), b) along with sacred text, various musical characteristics of Syriac chant such as the microtonal variation of intervals, words in metrics, the melodic construction, dynamics, modal system of eight—which represent the impressive formulae of the earlier evolution of the Syriac church in the field of ecclesiastical music—are a couple of vital entities that function in tandem to produce a consistent, compelling, and spiritual sacred chant.

    Spotlight on the Global Jihad (February 19-25, 2015) Main events of the week1 This week, there were no significant changes in the various combat zones in Iraq and Syria. YPG’s Kurdish forces continue to repel ISIS from the rural area of Kobani and this week it was reported that they were nearing the city of Tal al-Abyad, which is controlled by ISIS. As the fighting continued in the area of Kobani, this week, Turkey evacuated a Turkish enclave in Syrian territory located about 35 km south of the Turkish-Syrian border. Suleyman Shah, grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman Empire, was buried there. The evacuation, carried out by the Turkish Army and Turkish intelligence services, was accomplished without confrontation with ISIS. ISIS, which is establishing its presence in Libya, used social networks for recruiting foreign fighters to fight in the ranks of the organization in Libya. Suicide bombers from the ISIS branch in Libya carried out attacks against targets affiliated with the secular Libyan government, based in eastern Libya. ISIS operatives continue to threaten Italy and the entire Christian world (“to conquer Rome”). The international campaign against ISIS US and coalition airstrikes During the week, there were several dozen airstrikes by US and coalition forces in Syria and Iraq.     2018 Human Rights Report Struggling to Breathe: the Systematic Repression of Assyrians ABOUT ASSYRIANS An estimated 3.5 million people globally comprise a distinct, indigenous ethnic group. Tracing their heritage to ancient Assyria, Assyrians speak an ancient language called Assyrian (sometimes referred to as Syriac, Aramaic, or Neo-Aramaic). The contiguous territory that forms the traditional Assyrian homeland includes parts of southern and south-eastern Turkey, north-western Iran, northern Iraq, and north-eastern Syria. This land has been known as Assyria for at least four thousand years. The Assyrian population in Iraq, estimated at approximately 200,000, constitutes the largest remaining concentration of the ethnic group in the Middle East. The majority of these reside in their ancestral homelands in the Nineveh Plain and within the so- called Kurdish Region of Iraq. Assyrians are predominantly Christian. Some ethnic Assyrians self-identify as Chaldeans or Syriacs, depending on church denomination. Assyrians have founded five Eastern Churches at different points during their long history: the Ancient Church of the East, the Assyrian Church of the East, the Chaldean Catholic Church, the Syriac Catholic Church, and the Syriac Orthodox Church. Many of these churches, as well as their various denominations, have a Patriarch at their head; this role functions, to various degrees, in a similar way to the role of the Pope in Roman Catholicism. There are at least seven different Patriarchs who represent religious Assyrian communities – however, these individuals frequently experience oppression from governmental institutions in their native countries, and consequentially often face pressure that prevents them from disclosing accurate information on the subject of human rights.
