ABSTRACT The butterflies Byblia ilithyia (Nymphalidae), Pieris canidia (Pieridae) and Azanus jesous (Lycaenidae) and the day-flying moth, Nyctemera adversata (Erebidae) are oligophagous. Previously, only B. ilithyia has been reported to be occurring in this region while the other three species are being reported for the first time from this region. The larval host plants include Jatropha gossypiifolia and Tragia involucrata for B. ilithyia, Brassica oleracea var. oleracea and B. oleracea var. botrytis for P. canidia, and Acacia auriculiformis for Azanus jesous. The nectar plants include Tragia involucrata, Euphorbia hirta and Jatropha gossypiifolia for B. ilithyia, Premna latifolia and Cleome viscosa for P. canidia, Lagascea mollis, Tridax procumbens and Digera muricata for A. jesous and Bidens pilosa for 275 N. adversata. The study recommends extensive field investigations to find out more larval plants and nectar plants for each Page lepidopteran species now reported. -

Tara and Madhvi Gupta Department of Zoology, University of Jammu Jammu-180,006, India *Corresponding author: Anu Bala Abstract The present article incorporates detailed field observations of family Pieridae in Jammu region at different altitudes during spring, summer and autumn seasons of 2012-2013. The study revealed that 13 species of butterflies belonging to 10 genera of family Pieridae exist in the study area. Most members of Family Pieridae are white or yellow. Pieridae is a large family of butterflies with about 76 genera containing approximately 1,100 species mostly from tropical Africa and Asia. Keywords :Butterflies, India, Jammu, Pieridae. Introduction Jammu and Kashmir is the northernmost state of India. It consists of the district of Bhaderwah, Doda, Jammu, Kathua, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Reasi, Samba and Udhampur. Most of the area of the region is hilly and Pir Panjal range separates it from the Kashmir valley and part of the great Himalayas in the eastern districts of Doda and Kishtwar. The main river is Chenab. Jammu borders Kashmir to the north, Ladakh to the east and Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to the south. In east west, the line of control separates Jammu from the Pakistan region called POK. The climate of the region varies with altitude. The order Lepidoptera contains over 19,000 species of butterflies and 100,000 species of moths worldwide. -

The family Pieridae were collected with the help of insects net and naked hands. A total of 8 species and 6 genera were collected, i.e., Common or lemon emigrant, Catopsilia ponoma Fabricius; Mottled emigrant, Catopsilia pyranthe Linnaeus; Clouded yellow, Colias fieldii Fabricius; Common grass yellow, Eurema hecabe Linnaeus; Eastern pale clouded yellow butterfly, Colias erate Esper; Indian cabbage white, Pieris canidia Sparrman; Indian little orange tip, Colotis etrida Boisduval; Pioneer white or African caper white, Belonias aurota Fabricius. Aims of the present research the characteristics of butterfly fauna from Tehsil Tangi, are helpful in awareness, education and further research. Khan Department of Zoology, Rajshahi University, Rajshahi 6205, Bangladesh Abstract: The butterflies of the Rajshahi University campus have been collected and identifying since 1991. A total of 88 species under 56 genera and 10 families were identified. The number of identified species and their percentage were recorded family wise as: Nymphalidae (21, 23.86%), Pieridae (20, 22.73%), Papilionidae (13, 14.77%), Danaidae (10, 11.36%), Lycaenidae (9, 10.23%), Satyridae (8, 9.09%), Hespiriidae (4, 4.54%); and those of the families Acraeidae, Amathusidae and Riodinidae (1, 1.14%). Tara Abstract Suru valley of district Kargil in Ladakh region also referred as the high altitude cold desert was surveyed during the year 2015-16 to record the insect fauna of the order Lepidoptera. A detailed field study of some prevalent butterflies of the study area is presented. The study revealed 8 species of butterflies belonging to 6 genera of family Pieridae and Nymphalidae It is the third largest insect order which include moths and the butterflies. Keywords: Ladakh, Suru valley, Lepidoptera. Introduction Suru valley of district Kargil lies at an altitude 2,600 - 5,000 metres in Ladakh region of the J & K. The valley is drained by the Suru river, a powerful tributary of Sind river in Ladakh which originates from the Penzilla glacier. The beauty of this valley is further added by two gigantic peaks of spectacular Nun (7,135m) and Kun (7,932m) which loom over the skyline. It extends from Kargil town towards the south wards for a length of about 75 kms upto the expanse around Panikhar and eastward for another stretch of nearly 65 kms upto the foot of Penzilla. The hills of Suru valley are cultivated intensively than anywhere else in Kargil. -

The promotion of flagship species is one way to generate interest in invertebrate conservation. Butterflies are frequently labeled invertebrate flag- ships, but clear definitions of the conservation actions they are meant to catalyze, and empirical assessments of their popularity amongst non-Western audiences are lacking. To improve the use of invertebrate flagships, we examine how butterflies compare with other taxa in terms of popularity. We then identify characteristics of individual species that are appealing and explore whether these may be used to derive a set of guidelines for selecting invertebrate flagships. We conducted questionnaire-based surveys amongst two target audiences: rural residents (n = 255) and tourists (n = 105) in northeast India. Inverte- brates that were aesthetically appealing, or those that provided material benefits or eco- logical services were liked. Butterflies were the most popular group for both audiences, followed by dragonflies, honeybees and earthworms. Urbanization can severely impact butterfy communities, yet there have been no reports of the species richness and distribution of butterfies in urban parks in Beijing. Here, we conducted the frst butterfy survey in ten urban parks in Beijing and estimated butterfy species richness. Subsequently, we examined the distribution pattern of butterfy species and analyzed correlations between butterfy species richness with park variables (age, area and distance to city center), and richness of other bioindicator groups (birds and plants). We collected 587 individual butterfies belonging to 31 species from fve families; 74% of the species were considered cosmopolitan. The highest butterfy species richness and abundance was recorded at parks located at the edge of city and species richness was signifcantly positively correlated with distance from city center (p < 0.05). No signifcant correlations were detected between the species richness and park age, park area and other bioindicator groups (p > 0.05). Our study provides the frst data of butterfy species in urban Beijing, and serves as a baseline for further surveys and conservation eforts. China is a megadiverse country but is rapidly losing biodiversity as a consequence of socioeconomic development and expansion of urban land since the 1990s1,2. -

Article published on August 31, 2016 Key words: Hand net swiping method, Pieridae, Nymphalidae, Danaidae, Host availability, Systematics Abstract This entomological study was conducted at University of Gujrat to discover the butterfly species in Gujrat district of Province Punjab, Pakistan. During the study, about 232 specimens of adult butterflies were collected by hand net swiping method from the different localities of Gujrat district. Among these specimens, twelve species of butterflies were identified which belong to eight generas, four subfamilies and three families. The Pieridae family includes 78.44 %, family Nymphalidae includes 8.18 % and family Danaidae includes 13.36 % species of this study area. The family Pieridae is represented by six species that are Anapheis aurota, Pieris canidia, Pieris brassicae, Catopsilia florella, Catopsilia pyranthe and Eurema hecabe. The family Nymphalidae is represented by four species that are Junonia orithya, Junonia almana, Vanessa carduiand Ergolis merione. Whereas the family Danaidae is represented by two species that are Danaus chryssipus and Danaus genutia. The maximum population (74 numbers) of Pieris canidia was recorded throughout the season; whereas, Danaus genuttia and Vanessa cardui was least populated (01 numbers). -

Most species exhibit constrained chromosome evolution with nearly identical haploid chromosome counts and chromosome-level gene collinearity among species more than 140 million years divergent. However, a few species possess radically inflated chromo- somal counts due to extensive fission and fusion events. To address this enigma of constraint in the face of an Downloaded from exceptional ability to change, we investigated an unprecedented reorganization of the standard lepidopteran chromosome structure in the green-veined white butterfly (Pieris napi). We find that gene content in P. napi has been extensively rearranged in large collinear blocks, which until now have been masked by a haploid chromosome number close to the lepidopteran average. We observe that ancient chromosome ends have been maintained and collinear blocks are enriched for functionally related genes suggesting both a mechanism and a possible role for selection in determining the boundaries of these genome-wide rearrangements.
