Phonological Pattern Suppression by Age Children with normally developing articulation seem to suppress certain phonological processes within approximate time frames. The approximate age of suppression is helpful when determining normal versus disordered phonological systems and can be used as a guideline when determining treatment goals. This chart summarizes the ages by which at least 75% of children no longer use a given process.

Individual Likely Age of Description Example Process Disappearance

Denasalization changing a nasal to a nonnasal mat → /bæt/ 2.6

changing a so it takes on a characteristic cat → /tæt/ 3 of another sound in the word

Affrication substituting an for a nonaffricate sheep → /tʃip/ 3

Final consonant omitting a singleton consonant at the end of a word cat → /kæ/ 3 deletion of initial substituting a front sound for a back sound can → /tæn/ 4 velar singles

Deaffrication replacing an affricate with a or stop chip → /sɪp/ 4

Cluster reduction omitting one or more in a sequence grape → /gep/ 4 (without /s/) of consonants

Depalatalization of substituting a nonpalatal for a palatal sound at dish → /d t/ 4.6 fi nal singles the end of a word ɪ

Depalatalization of substituting a nonpalatal for a palatal sound at shy → /ta 5 initial singles the beginning of a word ɪ/

Alveolarization substituting an alveolar for a nonalveolar sound chew → /tu/ 5

Final consonant substituting a voiceless fi nal consonant for a bag → /bæk/ 5 devoicing voiced consonant

Cluster reduction omitting /s/ in the initial position of a cluster step → /t p/ 5 (with /s/) ɛ

Labialization replacing a nonlabial sound with a labial sound tan → /pæn/ 6

substituting a voiced consonant for a voiceless consonant Initial voicing sun → / n/ 6 before a ʌ

Gliding of initial substituting a // or // for another consonant run → /w n/ 7 liquids ʌ black → / adding a sound, typically /ʌ/, between two consonants 8 bʌlæk/
