Volume 6 Santa Ana Cemetery 1702 East Fairhaven Avenue Santa Ana, California 92701 fpl r 1981, The Orange County California Genealogical Society m Post Office Box 1587 [ Orange, California 92668 R3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS pn This book is the culmination of the work of many members and officers of the Orange County California Genealogical Society. Copying the tombstone inscriptions was begun in I969» and some records were previously printed in the O.C.C.G.a, QUARTERLY. This book, however, is the first complete collection of the old Santa Ana Cemetery inscriptions.. While this is a volume of tombstone in scriptions, there were some interments without tombstones in the cemetery. Much time and effort have gone into reading the stones, psi typing the stencils and printing the book. On behalf of the Society, I would like to thank the following individuals for their much appreciated contributions. Previous to that time there was a Masonic Cemetery located on land do nated to the new Santa Ana Lodge No. 241 by Mr. JACOB ROSS, according to Mr. CHARLES D. SWANNER, Santa Ana lawyer and historian. His book "Santa Ana, A Narrative of Yesterday," published in 1953 (page 29) explains: "There are, no doubt, very few of our inhabitants today who know that during the early days a cemetery existed on the northwest corner of 8th and Ross Streets! ... eleven bodies of Masons or their families were buried there. After the Santa Ana Cemetery, northeast of Santa Ana, was established, all of the bodies from this cemetery were moved to the Santa Ana Cemetery and the old cemetery was later subdivided and sold for residential purposes." At the time his book was published, Mr. Swanner received a letter from Mortimer Hubbard of Tustin, aged 96 years explaining that he came to Santa Ana in 1870 and was hired to help move the cemetery to its new location, and he thought the cemetery was closer to the area of 6th and the N. East corner of Ross -- about where the old St. Ann's Hotel was located. Mr. Carl Young, Cemetery Trustee of the Masonic Lodge, confirmed the burial of eleven Masons and their families in the old Masonic Cemetery and the removal of them to the new location purchased by the Masons in 1898. No permanent care was given at the new location on East Santa Clara Avenue until it was made part of Fairhaven Memorial Park in 1907. The burial records in the office start at that time.
