It is difficult to say what the pre-glacial topography was like, because of glacial and post- glacial changes, but the Chalk and Greensand areas of south and mid- Bedfordshire stood, as now above the adjacent clay vales, with the Ivel and perhaps part of the middle Ouse, draining towards the Wash. There is evidence that powerful ice movements occurred where the Ivel valley narrows in crossing the belt of more resistant Lower Greensand. Like a huge blanket the Boulder Clay lies over the higher ground in the north of the county and is widespread about the centre.
