Celine Valentini had found some measure of acceptance in her solitary life until the arrival of an unexpected, handsome visitor. He informs her that her grandfather is ill and he’s there to escort her back to him–and to the circus family she’d fled seven years earlier. Once a talented member of The Flying Valentinis, she must now face not only her fear of returning to the trapeze, but also the man who’d callously dismissed her love. Passionate, heartbreaking memories of her knight in white satin are the real reason she’s never been able to return. Peter Cortland, running from the tragic loss, first of his child, then his wife, found solace and some sense of peace behind the painted white facade of a clown, the presence of one lone teardrop the only outward evidence of the heavy sorrow he carried inside. Undeniably drawn to the vibrant and beautiful aerial performer, when a terrible accident almost takes her life, in a desperate act of self-preservation he forces her out of his heart. It’s taken seven years for him to come to terms with his tragedies and now he wants another chance at the love he threw away all those years ago. Beneath the Big Top, surrounded by the scent of sawdust, greasepaints, and the glittering energy of the center ring, can Celine and Peter face their inner fears and reclaim what they’ve lost? Five years ago it wasn’t an accident that almost killed Celine. Will a jealous, unbalanced rage rooted in the past again rear its ugly head, only this time to succeed in causing Celine’s destruction? In the wake of another year of useless energy spent, another year of claims and rebuttals to anthropogenic global warming is already beginning. The Moody Blues’ Nights in White Satin comes to mind. I find myself at odds with both sides of the debate, for I am coming to the uneasy conclusion that this is one of the greatest wastes of time and energy in which I have ever been involved. As far as what I do for a living, the argument really means nothing. If it goes away tomorrow, I won’t change what I have researched and used climate for one iota. The only reason I got involved was because a lot of people who never make forecasts decided they were going to tell other people why something was happening after the fact. To an operational meteorologist, you have no business dictating to the guy that is taking a stand beforehand why something happened. You want to do that, get out in front and be right. Breath deep The gathering gloom Watch lights fade From every room Bedsitter people Look back and lament Another day’s useless Energy spent – From the closing of “Nights in White Satin,” The Moody Blues. The only reason I got involved was because a lot of people who never make forecasts decided they were going to tell other people why something was happening after the fact. To an operational meteorologist, you have no business dictating to the guy that is taking a stand beforehand why something happened. You want to do that, get out in front and be right. You see folks, one of the big problems I see is that, for years, climatologists were not given the same status as were meteorologists. Twenty years ago, the television mets were already rock stars, but did you know one climatologist? The joke at Pennsylvania State University (PSU) when I attended was that, if you can’t forecast, do climatology. I loved climatology. To me as a kid, it was weather history, and I loved history. So when my dad was in school, I dug into the only thing I could really understand at that young age – climatology. I actually memorized the monthly averages at different cities around the world so I could identify them if you just gave me the data! Years later, in my climatology class, we would get tested with the same data I memorized as a kid. I loved it! But as a forecaster, we’re always looked down upon by the dynamists in the field who dealt with a lot of the high-powered math and physics. I was always reminded by my professors that the part of the atmosphere the weather takes place in is only 10%. Meteorology is the study of the whole picture. So the pecking order was dynamists, synopticians (forecasters), climatologists. It’s like the Three Stooges – Moe smacks Larry, Larry smacks Curly. Interesting interpretation, eh? I see people labeled heroes and villains in a climate war with dispatches, etc. I would suggest those people know nothing about real war, or even severe physical challenges. Then you have me who has never been to war, so I can’t know. But I wrestled at PSU under a guy that was one of the first men on the beach of Normandy who believed that wrestling was meant to test you to prepare you for life. Wondering if I would catch my next breath was pretty challenging. So this is not a war to me, and, with all the silly things going on, it’s more like a Three Stooges routine, except $185 billion down the drain in 21 years is no laughing matter. At least not to me. C'est la vie. But there is so much cross motivation here on both sides, it is in the interest of both sides to keep it going! What happens if it stops? A lot of people aren’t going to be rock stars anymore. (I was in a rock band, for a couple of years anyway, so I have had my rock stardom.) Me? Could care less about that. My job depends on getting the weather right, but I have used climate as a foundation because that is what I was taught. It has always been about the search for the right answer, not my answer. I can see the test in front of me, and will have the truth revealed by what actually happens (like any forecast). There is no real dog in the fight. It’s not what I do, but it is a strong means to the end of what I do! You need to know and understand the past, for it forms the foundation you stand on today to reach for tomorrow. But to know the past, you can’t sit on the sideline and tell people after the fact. You must do to truly know. My obvious distaste for this is that I am being told by a bunch of people in the stands what is happening based on what they see … from the stands. They aren’t out fighting every day, where right and wrong can be determined in real time. Perhaps it’s the leftover attitude from my college days. Sea ice is classic. It goes the other way, and there is an excuse that is then repackaged to say it was expected. Or the heat hiding in the ocean, when Dr. Bill Gray wrote about it 40 years ago. So why do we run to the guys that says it after the fact, rather than the guy who talked about this 40 years ago? It goes on and on, and it’s now 2015. The AGW side has an interest in it. With $185 billion dollars now since 1993 spent on climate change and related interests, wouldn’t you? In the end, there is nothing we as humans can do about the climate. That is not to say we cannot help the environment; I mean be good stewards. But the AGW agenda has really hijacked the environmental movement, at least the one I spent a lot of time and effort on when I was younger and one I still think is worthwhile. But each person reading this, pro or con, has to ask themselves the same question I do all the time. In relation to the myriad of problems that face us a people today, is this what we want to be occupied with? I will end with the closing lines of the spoken part of Nights in White Satin: Cold hearted orb That rules the night Removes the colours From our sight Red is gray and Yellow white But we decide Which is right And Which is an Illusion. I don’t now if it’s a cold hearted orb that rules the night, but humans certainly do not rule the climate. I would suggest a lot of this is illusion. The Knight in White Satin Armor. " The Knight in White Satin Armor " is the 12th episode of Season 2 of the HBO original series The Sopranos . It is the 25th overall episode in the series. It was written by Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess, directed by Allen Coulter and originally aired on April 2, 2000. Contents. Synopsis [ edit | edit source ] The episode begins where Richie Aprile's son is practicing ballroom dancing while his nephew Jackie Aprile Jr. is hanging out with friends at Janice's home. After being told by Janice that she knows of his Russian girlfriend on the side, Tony attempts to break it off with Irina Peltsin for reasons of shame and embarrassment, and insists to Irina that she deserves better than being his comáre . Irina refuses to accept the breakup, saying that she loves Tony and will commit suicide if he leaves her, but he walks out. Tony later receives a call from Irina's cousin, Svetlana Kirilenko, informing him that Irina attempted to kill herself by consuming sleeping pills and vodka. Tony visits her in the hospital and tells her that she needs help. Tony then discusses Irina with Dr. Melfi and asks if she can find her a suitable therapist. Melfi refuses since she does not want to get deeply involved with Tony's criminal career or extramarital life. When Tony, in an attempt to cast himself as doing the right thing, confesses the Irina situation to Carmela, she becomes angered and yells, "You are putting me in a position where I am feeling sorry for a whore who fucks you??" To make amends, Tony sends Silvio Dante to Irina's house to present her with a parting gift of $75,000, and along with Svetlana, he persuades her to move on with her life. While this solves Tony's problem with Irina, the threat of Richie Aprile taking over the Soprano crime family by killing Tony remains, and he cannot be bought off. At a bridal shop, while Janice is beaming over her upcoming marriage to Richie, Carmela makes comments that soon enough Janice's marriage will go down the same path as her own, which Janice defends by saying she engages in kinky (and potentially dangerous) activities that no comáre could match. At Richie Aprile and Janice's engagement party, which Tony reluctantly hosts, Richie professes his love for Janice and his gratitude that he is entering a great family. Witnessing the pair's affection and happiness, Carmela escapes to the kitchen where she cries uncontrollably. The following day, Carmela runs into Vic Musto at a paint store where she thanks him for not showing up to their intended luncheon since she would have done things that she would have regretted. Big Pussy Bonpensiero begins to take to his job as an FBI informant seriously, beginning to feel even more resentment towards Tony. First he wears a wire to Richie and Janice's engagement party and then elicits useful information about stolen airline tickets and Tony's business with Dave Scatino. However, Pussy begins to develop an unrealistic image of his new role. When he learns that Christopher Moltisanti is planning a hijacking with another associate, targeting a shipment of Pokémon cards, Pussy attempts to conduct his own surveillance and follow them to the heist, but winds up in a car accident and is wounded. At the hospital, his handler Skip Lipari reminds Pussy that he is not a government employee and that he should focus solely on providing information on Tony. Richie's contempt for Tony grows when he is again ordered to shut down a sideline distributing cocaine along his garbage routes. Later, Janice informs him that Tony refuses to have his children near him after the situation with Beansie Gaeta, and believes Richie is a bad influence. Furious, Richie can no longer remain loyal to the boss. Richie approaches Junior Soprano and suggests having Tony killed, but Junior is reluctant, being mindful of his own failure to do so last year, and his tentative reconciliation with his nephew since then. When Richie insists that he can muster support from other dissatisfied crews such as the Bareses, Junior finally offers his approval. Richie visits Albert Barese, acting-capo of the Barese crew since his cousin Larry Boy's indictment, to try to win his allegiance, but Albert balks at the idea of a hit on Tony and refuses. Junior subsequently suggests to Richie that they should wait and consider their options - but once Richie departs, Junior mulls his loyalties once more and concludes Richie's inability to "sell" the plan to Albert reflects upon his lack of respect and influence. He ultimately decides that having Richie in power would ultimately cause him more trouble, and tips off Tony about Richie's plans to eliminate him. After learning of this, Tony asks for Silvio's advice on what to do with Richie, and Silvio concludes that there is no further benefit to keeping Richie around. Silvio is ordered to plan the hit - but these plans will be overtaken by other events. Vexed, Richie returns home to dinner with Janice, and expresses disgust for his son Richie, Jr.'s career path as a ballroom dancer. When Janice takes offense, saying she does not care if "Little Ricky" is considered gay, he silences her with a punch to the mouth. He asks his distraught fiancée, "What, are you going to cry now?". Janice walks out of the room, returns with a gun in her hand and shoots Richie in the chest. Richie clings to life for a brief moment hardly believing what had just happened. Janice shoots him a second time, killing him. Starting to panic, she calls Tony to take care of the body, which he does by enlisting the help of Christopher Moltisanti and Furio Giunta, where they dismember the corpse with the meat- cutting equipment from Satriale's. Tony then buys Janice a bus ticket to Seattle and they quickly part company. The Music's Over. Died On This Date (January 4, 2018) Ray Thomas / The Moody Blues. Ray Thomas , a founding member of the English rock band, the Moody Blues passed away on January 4, 2018 at the age of 76. Cause of death was not immediately released. Thomas was just nine years old when his father taught him to play the harmonica, and by the time he was 16, he had already quit school by two years and had set his music career in motion. He had also taken up the flute, later, his primary instrument, by that time as well. His first band of note was called El Riot and the Rebels who opened a gig for the Beatles in 1963. The following year, he and fellow band mate, Mike Pinder recruited Denny Laine , Graeme Edge and Clint Warwick , and the Moody Blues was born. The band’s first album, The Magnificent Moodies was released in 1965. Having a Merseybeat/R&B sound then, which was very popular in the UK, the album produced a #1 UK hit and #10 US hit with the band’s cover of “Go Now.” Warwick and Laine soon exited, and in 1966, a new era for the band was born with the addition of John Lodge and Justin Hayward . The group’s sound became more orchestral and complex. The first resulting album was 1967’s Days of Future Passed , which propelled the band to fame across Europe and North America. Songs like “Tuesday Afternoon,” and in particular, “Nights in White Satin,” laid the foundation for what would be called Prog Rock. Thomas’ flute solo in “Nights in White Satin” is considered a watershed moment for the genre. He was later nicknamed “The Flute,” for obvious reasons. Health concerns and the Moody Blues’ move into more of a synth sound during the ’80s lead to Thomas’ retirement in 2002, but he did show up on a recording here and there in later years. In 2013, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. And December 13, 2017 – less than a month before Thomas passed away, it was announced that the Moody Blues would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Class of 2018. What You Should Own. Although the band’s follow up, Into The Black , received some exposure via a video on MTV, it was the early ’90s, and they fell victim to the newfound popularity of grunge. Rather than give in to label wishes for them to shift their sound toward grunge, Dane left the band in 1992 and formed Nevermore which leaned more progressive than Sanctuary’s thrash sound. Nevermore signed with Century Media who went on to release their seven studio albums over the next 15 years. In 2011, the band went on hiatus while Sanctuary reunited and released their most successful album to date, 2014’s . They went on to release two more studio albums before Dane’s passing. David Cassidy , who became one of the biggest teen idols of the ’70s passed away after being hospitalized with kidney and liver failure. He was 67. Born into a show business family – his father was actor and singer Jack Cassidy , his mother, actress, Evelyn Ward – Cassidy began his career as a stage actor. He made his Broadway debut when he was just 18. At 20, he was offered the superstar-making role of Keith Partridge, on a new television show musical comedy that was loosely based on real life family pop band, the Cowsills . His stepmother, Shirley Jones who his father married after divorcing Cassidy’s mother, played his mother on the show. The program was hugely popular, and Cassidy – who played the band’s front man, quickly became a teen idol around the world. During the course of the show, the Partridge Family released eight studio albums and several compilations and singles. Cassidy and Jones, backed by session players, were the only cast members on those recordings. Their single, “I Think I Love You,” reached number one on the Billboard Singles Chart in August of 1970. What followed for Cassidy were countless magazine covers, concerts in front of 30,000+ screaming fans, and television appearances across every network. His solo albums during the mid- to late-70s even outsold those by the Partridge Family. Unfortunately for Cassidy, he wanted to be seen as a true rock star in the vein of Mick Jagger , but his adoring fans wouldn’t let him escape his bubble-gum teen idol image. While the hysteria eventually died off, Cassidy continued to record, perform live, and act in one form or another for the rest of his life. In his final years, he continued to endear himself to his most loyal fans, by adding question and answer segments at the end of his concerts. What You Should Own. Click to find at amazon.com. Malcolm Young , the co-founding guitarist for legendary hard rock band, AC/DC passed away with his family by his side after a long battle with dementia. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Young moved with his family to Australia when he was 10 years old. At 20, he formed AC/DC, which would go on to include his brother Angus Young on lead guitar, and Bon Scott on lead vocals. There were several line-up changes through the years, including the hiring of Brian Johnson on lead vocals after Scott passed away in 1980. With early Bon Scott fronted albums like T.N.T. , Powerage , and Highway to Hell , the band began to build a huge following around the world due in large part to the bigger-than-live sound and image largely conceived by Malcolm. Their first album with Johnson, 1980’s Back in Black , sent the band’s popularity into the stratosphere. That album alone has sold over 50 million copies while their entire catalog sits at over 200 million in sales. They are one of the highest-selling bands of all time. What You Should Own.
