As part of providing a public transport service that meets community needs a Foley Government will do all it can to make travelling on public transport safer. That’s why Labor will: • Re-introduce Guardian train services on Friday and Saturday nights; and • Run all-night train services from Kings Cross to Town Hall and Central Stations. Feeling safe and having confidence in the security on our trains is a major factor for people choosing whether or not to use the rail network, especially for women, parents with children, and older and other vulnerable people. The NRMA’s Seeing Red on Rail reported personal security as the second most pressing issue for over 11,000 thousand commuters. 38% of commuters in this survey said that they do not feel safe at certain times of the day. The Sydney Trains network includes 12 lines, 176 stations and many interchanges. NSW TrainLink network includes 5 intercity lines and over 130 stations. It is a large area to cover. Knowing that there is assistance if other passengers are being anti-social, violent or abusive – especially at night, can increase the numbers of people using public transport as well as improve security. Under the Baird Liberal Government, security on the rail network has been cut. When the Liberals and Nationals came to government in 2011 there were 600 dedicated transit officers for trains and 300 commuter police attached to local area commands.

A summary of changes follows: T1 North Shore – Some weekday afternoon Berowra services depart Mount Colah and Mount Kuring-gai one minute earlier. T1 Western – Weekdays: Services arrive at Richmond up to two minutes later. Weekends: Services at Schofields (in both directions) depart from the opposite platform. T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra – The 01:44 Waterfall to Hurstville service terminates short at Sutherland. T5 Cumberland – Weekend services now depart Schofields from platform one, instead of two.   • I Would Like to State First and Foremost That I Am Not Affiliated with Any
    I would like to state first and foremost that I am not affiliated with any political or action groups and speak here as a long time citizen of inner Newcastle (Newcastle East, Newcastle The Hill and Tighes Hill). I think the rail corridor should be used for the use it was originally designated for: Heavy Rail. I cannot make economic, or otherwise, sense of removing working heavy infrastructure from a major city with a direct link to a capital city as well as the pulse of the region: the Hunter Valley. It just does not make any sense. Re‐install the heavy rail, immediately. You can build over the rail, if you must, for more units and commercial space and interconnectedness between Hunter Street and the harbour. Perhaps reinvigorate the second storey of buildings either side of the rail corridor. Then with all the money saved by not wasting it on the world's shortest tram route spend it on real and useful public transport options. Such as a tram (or other) route from Newcastle heavy rail terminus to Nobby's, Newcastle beach, King Street, Darby St, Bar Beach, The Junction. Or perhaps extend the rail to Wallsend and the build a tram (or other) from the growing residential areas of Cameron Park and Fletcher etc to the new rail at Wallsend or to Cardiff. Perhaps a tram or rail from Nelson Bay, via Newcastle air port, to Newcastle rail station. Maybe a decent ferry route incorporating Carrington/Linwood and lower end of Stockton. My point here is, keep heavy rail in the Newcastle rail corridor.

    2013 BUDGET ESTIMATES - POLICE 14 AUGUST 2013 PART A : HEARING QUESTIONS 1. CHILD ABUSE SQUAD The Hon. STEVE WHAN: Minister, the report in January 2013 said that 50 cases were ready to proceed in January, but suspects had not been arrested because of lack of resources. Have all these suspects now been arrested and charged? The Hon. MICHAEL GALLACHER: I remind the member that there has been substantial debate on this in the House. In fact, I recall answering these questions on a previous occasion. I refer him to my previous answers, but in lieu of that I will also take that question on notice from my perspective in respect of the answers that I have given. If there is anything further I need to add, I will. _________________________________________________________________________ ANSWER: As I advised the House on 18 June 2013 in response to a Question Without Notice, the NSW Police Force has advised that these 50 cases were a subset of 67 matters which the Child Abuse Squad had progressed to a point where a formal complaint had been made. Police advised that all of the 67 matters, including the 50 matters mentioned in the report, resulted in the offenders being arrested or legal action commenced by 20 December 2012. That is : o 47 were arrested and charged; o 17 had future court attendance notices issued and legal action commenced. All have subsequently been placed before the court; o 3 warrants were issued for the arrest of the offenders. Each of those offenders has since been arrested.
