The 50 most mindblowing ideas in neuroscience, each explained in half a minute.

Description The bestselling 30-Second series takes a revolutionary approach to learning about those subjects you feel you really should understand. Each title dissects a popular topic into its 50 most significant ideas, explaining each one using only 300 words and a picture. The brain is the hot science topic of the moment. As imaging technology, genetics, chemistry, and computing reveal our brains in ever more technicolour detail, neuroscientists are gaining new insights into how our minds work. Dr John Williams of the Wellcome Trust said in 2012: 'We're on the cusp of major breakthroughs in our understanding of the brain'

So, what can an MRI scan tell us? What does happen when our brain goes wrong? And are we all at the mercy of our brain chemistry? 30-Second Brain is the fastest way to fill your mind with the science of what's happening inside your head.

About the Author Editor Anil Seth is Professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience and founding co-director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science at the University of Sussex. Pier 9 JULY 2016 30-Second Philosophies: The 50 most thought-provoking philosophies, each explained in half a minute Barry Loewer

A fascinating guide to the main ideas and influential thinkers in the world of philosophy.

Description Explaining the most significant ideas in philosophy in under a minute. Cogito ergo sum. Cynicism. Dialectical Materialism. Existentialism. The Socratic Method. Deconstructionism. Everybody knows what they mean. Or thinks they know what they mean. At least you have probably heard of them and like to bandy about them to impress your friends. But do you have the back up? What happens if you get trapped in the corner by a real hottie with a masters degree in phenomenology?

30-Second Philosophies takes a revolutionary approach to getting a grip on the 50 most important and significant schools of philosophy. It will challenge a half century of great thinkers to quit fretting about the meaning for a while and explain the most significant theories of philosophical thought in half a minute, using nothing more than two pages, 300 words and a metaphorical image. Here in one unique volume you have the opportunity to pick the potted brains of our leading philosophers and understand complex concepts such as 'the categorical imperative' without ending up in a darkened room with an ice pack on your head.

About the Author Barry Loewer is Professor of Philosophy and Chair of the Philosophy department at Rutgers University, New Jersey. His interests include the metaphysical foundations of science, the philosophy of physics, and the philosophy of mind. He is co-author of Meaning in Mind with Georges Rey and Physicalism and its Discontents with Carl Gillett. Pier 9 JULY 2016 30-Second Psychology: The 50 most thought-provoking psychology theories, each explained in half a minute Dr Christian Jarrett

A compact yet detailed introduction to the primary theories of psychology and the history of its development.

Description A crash course in the top 50 behavioural theories. The inner workings of the mind have long been a source of fascination to doctors, philosophers, and the general public alike. Back in 550 BCE, Thales of Miletus came up with an elaborate theory about how the psyche functioned, and in 600 CE the Chinese scholar Lin Xie is said to have devised the first psychological test. Nowadays, everyone likes to think they know a bit about psychology. We've all heard of Pavlov and his dog. Freud's theories on sexuality provide an excuse for endless cheeky innuendo. And a whole industry has built up around concepts of self-development and stress management. But is it really all that simple?

30-Second Psychology identifies the major strands of thinking in this fascinating field. It examines the theories of 19th- century behaviourism, where every action has a logical explanation, and how psychotherapy sought to undermine this approach. It looks at the development of humanistic psychology in the mid-20th century and the current domination of cognitivism, with its emphasis on mental structures. Along the way, we meet many of the luminaries in the field, including William James, Aaron Beck, and (of course) Sigmund Freud. What better way to get a handle on your inner demons?

About the Author Christian Jarrett is a journalist for the British Psychological Society. He has a Ph.D. in Behavioural Neuroscience from UMIST and in 2008 co-authored This Book Has Issues: Adventures in Popular Psychology. He also contributed to 30- Second Theories.

Pier 9 JULY 2016 The Queen A. N. Wilson

From the author of the critically acclaimed Victoria comes a celebration of the life and times of Queen Elizabeth II, as she celebrates her 90th birthday.

Description Biographer and novelist A. N. Wilson, whose most recent work on the life of Queen Victoria was an enormous critical and commercial success, turns his clear eye to our own Queen, Elizabeth II, as she turns 90.

In this unusual and vibrant examination of the life and times of Britain's most iconic living figure, Wilson considers the history of the monarchy, drawing a line between Victoria, the murder of the Romanovs, and the bloody history of Europe in the twentieth century, examining how and why the Royal Family has survived. He paints a vivid portrait of 'Lilibet' the woman, and of her reign, throughout which she has remained stalwart, unmoving, a trait some regard as dullness, but which Wilson argues is the key to her survival. He outlines the case for a Republic, arguing that this will almost certainly happen at some point after her reign is at an end, and probably begin in the Commonwealth.

In part historical overview, but with a keen eye to the future, A. N. Wilson writes with his signature warmth, intelligence and humour, celebrating the life of the Queen and her role as figurehead of Britain and the Commonwealth, while asking candidly whether we can remain a constitutional monarchy.

About the Author A. N. Wilson grew up in Staffordshire and was educated at Rugby and New College, Oxford. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, he holds a prominent position in the world of literature and journalism. He is a prolific and award- winning biographer and celebrated novelist. He lives in North London.

Atlantic JULY 2016 Snowball in a Blizzard: The Tricky Problem of Uncertainty in Medicine Steven Hatch

Combines Daniel Kahneman with Atul Gawande - providing a captivating discussion of why our overconfidence in medicine can be more deadly than any disease.

Description There's a running joke among radiologists: finding a possible tumour in a mammogram, they say, is akin to finding a snowball in a blizzard. The result? Up to 30% of breast cancer surgeries are done on those who have no cancer at all.

In this landmark book, medical professor Steven Hatch reveals that although modern medicine has reached new levels of scientific prowess, we know far less than we think we do. Indeed, CAT scans, MRIs, Mammograms, and blood tests provide a wall of data where false positives are rife. Thus, to be a good doctor, surgeon, or psychiatrist, it is just as important to know what one doesn't know, as what one does.

Covering everything from the efficacy of Prozac to the regular barrage of health advice by the media (e.g. bacon causing cancer), Hatch shows why it's essential that doctors and their patients know how to interpret data. A drug that might be very effective to a certain cohort of patients suddenly becomes little more than a placebo when given to large bodies of the population (think Statins). A prognosis of 10 years to live might be accurate on average but mean nothing for the individual cancer patient. Filled with the kind of revelations about flawed human reasoning that made Daniel Kahneman's Thinking Fast and Slow a bestseller, this is the must-read medical book for 2016.

About the Author Steven Hatch is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is also a practicing physician, clinical consultant, and medical student educator. Prior to his medical training, Hatch worked as a science writer for the Boston University School of Medicine.

Atlantic JULY 2016 Free Speech: Ten Principles for a Connected World Timothy Garton Ash

Leading political writer Timothy Garton Ash presents ten guiding principles for freedom of expression in the digital age, which are the result of a unique global conversation on the website: www.freespeechdebate.com

Description Never in human history was there such a chance for freedom of expression. If we have Internet access, any one of us can publish almost anything we like and potentially reach an audience of millions. Never was there a time when the evils of unlimited speech flowed so easily across frontiers: violent intimidation, gross violations of privacy, tidal waves of abuse. A pastor burns a Koran in Florida and UN officials die in Afghanistan.

Drawing on a lifetime of writing about dictatorships and dissidents, Timothy Garton Ash argues that in this connected world that he calls cosmopolis, the way to combine freedom and diversity is to have more but also better free speech. Across all cultural divides we must strive to agree on how we disagree. He draws on a thirteen-language global online project - freespeechdebate.com - conducted out of Oxford University and devoted to doing just that.

With vivid examples, from his personal experience of China's Orwellian censorship apparatus to the controversy around Charlie Hebdo to a very English court case involving food writer Nigella Lawson, he proposes a framework for civilized conflict in a world where we are all becoming neighbours.

About the Author Timothy Garton Ash is the prize-winning author of nine previous books of political writing, including, most recently, Facts Are Subversive. He is Isaiah Berlin Professorial Fellow at St Antony's College, Oxford, Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and a regular contributor to the Guardian and the New York Review of Books. Awards he has received for his writing include the Orwell Prize.

Atlantic JULY 2016 The Invention of Russia: The Journey from Gorbachev's Freedom to Putin's War Arkady Ostrovsky

The timely and gripping story of Russia since the collapse of Communism, by The Economist's Moscow bureau chief.

Description In 1985 Mikhail Gorbachev launched Perestroika, opened Russia up to the world, ended the Cold War and gave his people freedom. The demise of the Soviet Union offered hope that Russia would become a 'normal', 'civilized' country, embracing Western values of democracy and the free market. Thirty years later, Russia emerged as a corporate state, overcome by imperial nationalism, fanned by its authoritarian president Vladimir Putin, who smashed the post-Cold War order and ignited a war on the borders of Europe.

How did a country that liberated itself from seventy years of Soviet rule end up as one of the biggest threats to the West and, above all, to its own future? Why did the people who rejected Communist ideology come to accept state propaganda? In this bold and important book, Arkady Ostrovsky takes the reader on an enthralling journey from Gorbachev's freedom to Putin's war, illuminating the key turning points that often took the world by surprise. The main characters are not politicians, however, but those who took charge of the media and the message and invented Russia's dominant narrative.

From the suddenly wealthy men who came to command the airwaves to the newspaper editors and TV directors, and from the Russian intelligentsia to the Kremlin spin doctors and ideologists, The Invention of Russia shows just how these figures shaped the country during the tumultuous post-Soviet transformation.

As a foreign correspondent in his own country, Ostrovsky has experienced Russia's modern history first-hand, and through original research and interviews he reveals the ideological conflicts, compromises and temptations that have left Russia on a knife-edge.

Price: $24.99 (NZ$27.99) About the Author ISBN: 9780857891600 Arkady Ostrovsky is a Russian-born, British journalist who has spent fifteen years reporting from Moscow, first for the Format: Paperback - B format Dimensions: 198x129mm Financial Times and then as a bureau chief for The Economist. Aurum Press JULY 2016 Alpe d'Huez: The Story of Pro Cycling's Greatest Climb Katherine Sully, illustrated by Simona Sanfilippo

In Alpe d'Huez, veteran cycling journalist Peter Cossins reveals the triumphs, passion and despair behind the great exploits on the Alpe and discloses the untold details that have led to the mountain becoming as important to the Tour as the race is to resort at its summit.

Description It has been called the Tour de France's 'Hollywood climb', and there is no doubt that Alpe d'Huez has played a starring role in cycling's history since its first encounter with the sport back in 1952 when the legendary Fausto Coppi triumphed on the summit. Re-introduced to the Tour in 1976, Alpe d'Huez has risen to mythical status, thanks initially to a string of victories by riders from Holland, whose exploits attracted tens of thousands of their compatriots to the climb, which has become known as 'Dutch mountain'.

A snaking 13.8-kilometre ascent rising up through 21 numbered hairpins at an average gradient of 7.8%, Alpe d'Huez is the climb on which every great rider wants to win. Many of the sport's most famous and now even infamous names have won on the Alpe, including Bernard Hinault, Joop Zoetemelk, Lucho Herrera, Marco Pantani and Lance Armstrong. As well as days of brilliance, there have controversies such as the high-speed and drug-fuelled duels of the EPO years in the 1990s and into the new millennium.

This is a tale of man and machine battling against breath-taking terrain for the ultimate prize.

About the Author First drawn into the sport while a student in Spain in the mid-1980s, PETER COSSINS has been writing about cycling since 1993. He has covered more than a dozen editions of the Tour de France and spent three years as editor of Procycling magazine and the last five as contributing editor to that title. In 2012 he collaborated with Tour de France winner Stephen Roche on his autobiography, Born to Ride. The Monuments, his history of cycling's five greatest one-day Classic races, was published in 2014, when he also translated former French pro Christophe Bassons' autobiography, A Clean Break. Resident in Ilkley, he is the co-author of Two Days in Yorkshire, a review of the 2014 Tour's Grand Depart in the county. In Jeep: The History of America's Greatest Vehicle, three hundred color and black-and-white historical photos complement Patrick R. Foster's expertly written narrative, celebrating over 70 years of Jeep vehicle design and production.

Description The definitive, fully illustrated celebration of an auto manufacturer that paved its own way by going off-road. Few American vehicles, or vehicles made anywhere else in the world for that matter, are as universally iconic as the Jeep. From olive drab WWII military relics to the beloved Wrangler with its rear-mounted spare tire, open-air design, and telltale roll cage, the Jeep is a true classic. In Jeep: The History of America's Greatest Vehicle, automotive writer Patrick R. Foster chronicles over 70 years of Jeep vehicle design and production. Beginning with the Jeep as a crucial component of the American World War II fleet, Foster expertly recounts the corporate shifts, financial struggles and successes, close calls, and, above all, the enduring machines that have carried Jeep from the early 1940s to its triumphant role as a modern-day embodiment of American perseverance. Three hundred color and black-and-white historical photos complement his expertly written narrative of Jeep's entire history, reminding us that sometimes, the road less traveled was just waiting for the right truck.

Motorbooks JULY 2016 Airstream: America's World Traveler Patrick Foster

Airstream trailers--with their sleek, silver aerodynamic shape--have been around for some 80 years, and this book celebrates their legacy through engaging text and beautiful photography.

Description Iconic, aluminum-bodied Airstream trailers have been around for 80 years--get the full story in this photo-rich book.

Airstream is America's best and oldest manufacturer of travel trailers, and those retro silver coaches are iconic on America's highways. Representative of the age-old desire to explore, these trailers are unmistakable in design with distinctive aerodynamic rounded lines and an aluminum outer skin. Airstream: 80 Years of America's Traveler celebrates the eight decades since the first Airstream graced America's highways.

Airstream chronicles the fascinating history of Airstream trailers through a detailed history, stories, and beautiful photography. Although its roots stretch back to 1926, the first Airstream-brand trailers were introduced in 1936, just as America was emerging from the dark days of the Great Depression. Of the 400 travel-trailer manufacturers of that era, only Airstream survived. Dubbed the "Airstream Clipper" after the first trans-Atlantic seaplane, the 1936 Airstream featured a unique lightweight aluminum body that cut down on wind resistance, improved fuel efficiency, and made for easier towing. It slept four, carried its own water supply, was fitted with electric lights, and cost $1,200. The Airstream provided travelers with a way to see the world at their leisure and in solid comfort. It was the perfect vehicle for a country emerging from a long struggle.

In the eight decades since that first Airstream, the company has produced some of the finest trailers in the world and gained a worldwide reputation as the Rolls-Royce of travel trailers. The Airstream story is one of travel, adventure, and memories that last a lifetime.

A collection of writing by some of the early members of The London Library: George Eliot, Charles Dickens, EM Forster and Virginia Woolf, among others, write about the joy of living with books.

Description This little body of thought, that lies before me in the shape of a book, has existed thousands of years, nor since the invention of the press can anything short of an universal convulsion of nature abolish it. The London Library's members are, by their nature, interested in reading and preserving books. Many of the members have been, and still are today, some of the most impressive writers and thinkers of their time: from Dickens to David Hare, from Alfred Lord Tennyson to Kazuo Ishiguro. On Reading, Writing and Living with Books collects writing by some of the early members of The London Library: George Eliot, Charles Dickens, EM Forster and Virginia Woolf, among others, write about the joy of living with books. On Reading, Writing and Living with Books is part of 'Found on the Shelves', published with The London Library. The books in this series have been chosen to give a fascinating insight into the treasures that can be found while browsing in The London Library. Now celebrating its 175th anniversary, with over 17 miles of shelving and more than a million books. The London Library has become an unrivalled archive of the modes, manners and thoughts of each generation which has helped to form it.

About the Author On the 24th June, 1840, the celebrated Scottish author, historian, and biographer, Thomas Carlyle, stood up at a meeting in a crowded hall in Covent Garden to proclaim the need for a new lending Library in the great metropolis of London. Carlyle's vision succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. What he called into existence that night has become, over the ensuing 175 years, the largest independent lending library in the world. Today its facade in St James's Square gives little indication that beyond it lie over a million books, covering more than 17 miles of open access bookshelves arranged within seven interlocking buildings.

Pushkin JULY 2016 On Corpulence: Feeding The Body And Feeding The Mind The London Library

Before the Dr. Atkins diet, Protein Power, Carbohydrate Addicts, the Zone diet and all other high-protein low carb diet plans, there was William Banting's 1860 book about dieting.

Description Oh! that the faculty would look deeper into and make themselves better acquainted with the crying evil of obesity - that dreadful tormenting parasite on health and comfort.

William Banting, a short man who suffered great personal distress from his increasing fatness, finally happened upon a 'miracle cure'. So great was his relied that he wrote and published A Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to the Public. In singling out sugar and fats as the main cause of obesity, he was remarkably ahead of his time. The tract was an immediate success: thousands took up his diet; there were four editions of his book by 1869; and 'to bant' or 'banting' became a popular phrase for slimming, which lasted well into the twentieth century. Contains also a small piece by Lewis Carroll on 'feeding the mind', in which he tells us the best way to 'consume' books.

Pushkin JULY 2016 Life In A Bustle: Advice To Youth The London Library

A book helping us cope with the pace of life at the turn of the nineteenth century.

Description Every age has its own special difficulties and dangers. The disease which specially threatens this generation is restlessness, distraction, dissipation of intellectual and moral power. Its consequence is exhaustion and nervous collapse. And its symptom is Hurry.

At the turn of the (last) century, the world was changing rapidly. Trains were faster, cheaper and more comfortable than ever before. The new craze of bicycling had given men and women unprecedented independence. And the modernisation of telegraphy and the recent invention of the telephone meant that information could be exchanged over huge distances in a mere matter of minutes.

And so a disgruntled and discarded older generation took to pamphlets, leaflets and speeches to pass on their wisdom before it was too late. Alarmed but good-natured, didactic but profound, the resulting 'advice to youth' is valuable guidance for anyone troubled by the rush and bustle of the early century's information overload. Life in a Bustle is part of 'Found on the Shelves', published with The London Library.

Pushkin JULY 2016 Cycling: The Craze Of The Hour The London Library

A book about the dangers and joys of the 'modern' craze of cycling.

Description Directly you are in motion you will feel quite helpless, and experience a sensation of being run away with, and it will seem as if the machine were trying to throw you off.

The first bicycle was invented at the beginning of the nineteenth century, but it wasn't until the 1890s that the craze really took off. This brought with it the fears, scaremongering, worries and uncertainties that inevitably accompany any new fashion. Women (often unchaperoned and oddly dressed) taking to 'velocipedes'; over-exertion and heart disease; unknown effects on the health and development of the body - these are just some of the fears that haunted the establishment in the late nineteenth century ... but with it, of course, came the joy and wonder of 'the easy and agreeable motion' of this thoroughly modern means of locomotion.

Cycling: The Craze of the Hour is part of the 'Found on the Shelves' series, published with The London Library.

Pushkin JULY 2016 The Lure Of The North The London Library

A nineteenth-century Scandinavian travelogue in three parts.

Description If you give anything to a Norwegian (old meat tins are always thankfully received), he will give your hand a silent grip more expressive than many words. The Victorian passion for travel reached the far North in the nineteenth century, and many of the intrepid explorers were attracted by 'the advantages of accessibility, freedom, foreign travel, grand scenery, and, last but not least, comparative cheapness'. 'Six in Norway with a Snark', 'Unprotected Females in Norway' and 'Notes on Norway' all give, in their very different ways, a rounded view of the foreign traditions, language and landscapes encountered in the North in the nineteenth century. The Lure of the North is part of 'Found on the Shelves', published with The London Library.

Pushkin JULY 2016 The Gentlewoman's Book Of Sports The London Library

A book of trout-fishing, fencing, lawn tennis and more. Published in conjunction with the 175th anniversary of The London Library.

Description One would hear considerably less of hysteria, of morphine-mania, and of other regrettable characteristics of fin-de-siecle existence, if women were to take to fencing as one of the regular occupations of their day.

Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games, said in 1896 'no matter how toughened a sportswoman may be, her organism is not cut out to sustain certain shocks.' Women competed in the Olympics for the first time in 1900. Lady Greville, the editor of The Gentlewoman's Book of Sports, hopes that reading what each female expert sportswoman has written about her particular sport or pastime may encourage other women, as feminine but more timid, to imitate their achievements, and to acquire a keen zest for and sympathy with outdoor pursuits.

The Gentlewoman's Book of Sports is part of 'Found on the Shelves', published with The London Library.

When Conrad fails to return home from a conference one evening, Eleanor's first thought is one of relief. Atlantic JULY 2016 Bream Gives Me Hiccups: And Other Stories Jesse Eisenberg

The fiction debut of Academy Award-nominated actor, playwright and New Yorker contributor Jesse Eisenberg.

Description Bream Gives Me Hiccups: And Other Stories is the whip-smart fiction debut of Academy Award-nominated actor and star of The Social Network, Jesse Eisenberg. Known for his iconic film roles but also for his regular pieces in the New Yorker and his two critically acclaimed plays, Eisenberg is an emerging voice in fiction.

Taking its title from a group of stories that begin the book, Bream Gives Me Hiccups moves from contemporary L.A. to the dormrooms of an American college to ancient Pompeii, throwing the reader into a universe of social misfits, reimagined scenes from history, and ridiculous overreactions.

United by Eisenberg's gift for humour and character, and grouped into chapters that each open with an illustration by award-winning cartoonist Jean Jullien, the witty pieces collected in Bream Gives Me Hiccups explore what it means to navigate the modern world, and mark the arrival of a fantastically funny, self-ironic, witty and original voice.

About the Author Jesse Eisenberg is an Academy Award-nominated actor. He is also a celebrated playwright: his first play was nominated for a Drama League Award and his most recent play The Revisionist played off-Broadway and starred Eisenberg and Vanessa Redgrave. The electric atmosphere of late 1950s New York and a cut-throat publishing world are superbly evoked through the voices of three memorable characters.

Description 'Back in those days My Old Man was king of what they called the three-martini lunch. Eden Katz arrives in New York fresh-faced and filled with ambition to realise her dream of becoming an editor. She has to develop a thicker skin and adopt an imposture of her own in order to succeed. Quarry Books JULY 2016 The Paleo Slow Cooker: Healthy, Gluten-free Meals the Easy Way Arsy Vartanian, with Amy Kubal foreword by Chris Kresser

Revised and updated edition of The Paleo Slow Cooker makes following this diet a snap.

Description Note: This is a revised and updated edition.

The Paleo diet has been the latest health movement, taking the low carb diet a step further by eliminating grains and legumes and eating only lean, grass-fed meat. In short they consume only what was available to ancient humans or cavemen. The theory says that by eating what human bodies were designed to eat, people will be healthier, have fewer illnesses and lose weight. In many cases, Paleo diet consumers are also fueling their P90X or Cross Fit exercise routines, the two most popular fitness regimes in the country. The health benefits have been supported by major studies. This is a popular trend much like the low carb diet. It is combined with the great bookselling topic of slow cooking. While the cavemen didn’t have slow cookers, they certainly used slow cooking techniques over fires which make the meals in this book one step closer to the origins and theory behind the diet. The delicious dishes are as homey as they are healthy—and ready when you are.

About the Author Arsy Vartanian (Santa Cruz, CA) is a foodie and Paleo diet success story herself. Her blog Rubies and Radishes features tasty and inventive meals for those Paleo obsessed. She is also doing Cross Fit like many of her fellow Paleo dieters.

Allison & Busby JULY 2016 Snowball in a Blizzard: The Tricky Problem of Uncertainty in Medicine Steven Hatch
