Police Department – Virudhunagar District Particulars of Organisation, Functions and Duties Under Section 4(1)(B)(I) of Right to Information Act, 2005 Police Department – Virudhunagar District Particulars of organisation, functions and duties under section 4(1)(b)(i) of Right to Information Act, 2005 1. Objective/purpose: This Department is responsible for the administration of Police, Maintenance of of Law and order, Prevention and detection of Crime, VIP Bandobust, Collection of intelligence on the activities of terrorists, nuxals etc. The basic objective of the Department is to formulate policies, Laws, regularities for the effective criminal justice and implementation of Law and order in the District. 2) Brief History of Virudhunagar District Police: The old Ramanathapuram district was formed in 1910 by carving out certain portions from the Madurai and the Thirunelveli Districts. In the year 1985 this district was rifurcated as Ramanathapuram districts as per G.O. M.S. No. 577/Home(Pol. XIX)/85 dated 11.03.1985 and the district Police started its fuctioning at Virudhunagar from 15.03.85. In the year 1997 the Kamarajar district was renamed as Virudhunagar District. 3. Administrative Units: Police department is functioning under the administrative control of Home Secretary. The Director General of Police, Law and Order is the only Officer who is addressing the Government on all important matters of Police Department. The following Sub divisions / units are functioning under the administrative control of Virudhunagar District Police Deaprtment. I. Virudhunagar Sub Division. II. Sivakasi Sub Division III. Aruppukottai Sub Division IV. Rajapalayam Sub Division V. Sattur Sub Division VI. Srivilliputhur Sub Division VII. Thiruchuli Sub Division. VIII. District Crime Branch IX. District Crime Records Bureau X. Prohibition Enforcement Wing XI. Armed Reserve XII. Social Justice & Human Rights Wing XIII. Economic Offences Wing. 2 4. Working hours of the Department: There is no fixed time of work schedule. Round the clock all men and officer supported to be on duty. 5. The functions of Administrative Units : Superintendent of Police: The Superintendent of Police is the head of the district police force. Name of the Superintendent of Police : Thiru T.Senthil Kumar, IPS., Office Address :: Office of the Superintendent of Police, Collectorate Complex, Virudhunagar – 626 001. Telephone (office) : 04562 – 252300 Residence : 04562 - 252400 Additional Superintendent of Police, Crime: Additional Superintendent of Police, Crime is assigned with the work of assisting the Superintendent of Police. He looks after the prevention of crimes and detection of Crimes. He is also acting as Public Information Officer of Viruhdhunagar District. Name of the Additional Superintendent of Police : Vacant. ADSP, PEW is holding additional charge. Office Address :: Office of the Superintendent of Police, Collectorate Complex, Virudhunagar – 626 001. Telephone (office) : 04562 – 252499. Additional Superintendent of Police, PEW : Additional Superintendent of Police, PEW is assisted with the work of Superintendent of Police. He looks after the enforcement of any law and also monitoring the functioning of Bars attached to 200 TASMAC shops. Prevention of distillation of sale of ID arracks Name of the Additional Superintendent of Police: Thiru A.Chandrasekaran, Office Address :: Office of the Superintendent of Police, Collectorate Complex, Virudhunagar – 626 001. Telephone (office) : 04562 – 252277. 3 I) Virudhunagar Sub Division: The Virudhunagar Sub Division was formed and functioning in pursuance of the order in GO MS. No. 4362/Homes dated16.12.65. Deputy Superintendent of Police office cum residence was constructed Collectorate Complex Virudhunagar. In this sub Division there are it companies of 7 Local Police stations, 1 All Women Police Station 1 Control Room and 1 Traffic unit. The Virudhunagar Bazaar Police Station, East Police Station, Rural Police Station, Traffic and Control room is formed and functioning in rented building, Virudhunagar West P.S., Soolakarai P.S., Amathur P.S., Vachakarapatty P.S. and AWPS are functioning in Govt Building. Now Virudhunagar Sub Division is functioning with Virudhunagar West P.S., Bazaar P.S. in West Circle, Virudhunagar Rural P.S. and Soolakkarai in Rural Circle manned by Circle Inspectors. Virudhunagar East P.S., Amathur P.S., Vachakkarapatty P.S., AWPS and Control Room by Inspectors. Name of the Deputy Superintendent of Police : Thiru L.Pitchi. Office Address :: Collectorate Complex, Virudhunagar – 626 001. Telephone (office) : 04562 - 252387 II) Sivakasi Sub Division: The Sivakasi Sub Division was formed and functioning from the year 1907. This sub-division was quite heavy with 4 Circles which were Rajapalayam, Rajapalayam Rural, Srivilliputhur, Watrap and Sivakasi with 11 Station. Dy. Supdt. of Police office cum residence was located at Satchiyapuram, enroute of Sivakasi to Srivilliputhur road and functioning from 1907. In this sub division there are 5 Police Station, 1 AWPS &1 Traffic unit. The Traffic Police Station is formed and functioning from 27.12.1986 in Sivakasi Town P.S premises. Now Sivakasi Sub division is functioning with the following Police Station. 1) Sivakasi Town P.S 2) Maraneri P.S 3) Sivakasi Easst P.S 4) Thiruthangal P.S 5) M. Pudupatti P.S 6) AWPS Sivakasi 7) Traffic Police Station, Except Sivakasi East and Sivakasi AWPS, all other stations are SI manned station. Sivakasi Town P.S, Maraneri P.S are under the control of Sivakasi Town circle and Thiruthangal P.S, M.Pudupatty P.S are under the control of Thiruthangal circle. Taluk Polic Station new designed quartes for Sivakasi East P.S, Sivakasi Traffic, Sivakasi AWPS are constructed in Special reserve Sivakasi. Name of the Deputy Superintendent of Police: : Thiru R.Rajagopal Office Address :: Satchiyapuram, Sivakasi. Telephone (office) : 04562 - 254652. 4 III) Aruppukottai Sub Division: The Rajapalayam Sub Division was formed and functioning as per G.O. Ms No. 577/Home(POL XII) department dated 11.03.1985 after trifurcation of Erst while Ramanathapuram District. Deputy Superintendent of Police office cum resident was constructed adjacent to Taluk Police Station quarters on the eastern side of Madurai Road and the same was occupied on 09.07.02 as per G.O. Ms No. 905 Home(Police G) dept dt. 11.05.1991. This sub division is having 2 circles namely Aruppukottai Taluk, Kariyapatti and one upgraded Inspector manned Police station namely Aruppukottai Town Police Station and one Inspector manned All Women Police Staion. No traffic unit is functioning in this sub division. Aruppukottai Sub Division is functioning with the following Police Station. 1) Aruppukottai Town P.S. 2) Aruppukottai Taluk P.S. 3) Mallankinar P.S. 4) Pandalkudi P.S. 5) Kariyapatti P.S. 6) Aviyoor P.S. 7) AWPS, Aruppukottai. Name of the Deputy Superintendent of Police : : Vacant Office Address :: Madurai Road, Aruppukottai. Telephone (office) : 04566 – 220290. IV) Rajapalayam Sub Division: The Rajapalayam Sub Division was formed and functioning in pursuance of the order in G.O. Ms No. 1570/Home(Services B) department dated 03.03.90. Rajapalayam Sub Division with its head quarters at Rajapalayam with the supernumerary post of Deputy Superintendent of Police sanctioned in G.O Ms No. 1570 Home dated 03.07.90 is formed by re-arranging the circle in the existing Sivakasi and Virudhunagar Sub Divisions. Deputy Superintendent of Police office um resident was constructed on Tenkasi Road, near Chokkarkovil and functioning from 01.05.04 as per G.O. Ms No. 88 dt. 04.02.02. In this sub division there are 6 Police Stations, 1 AWPS & 1 Traffic Unit. The Traffic police station is formed and fuctioning as per G.O. Ms No. 915 dt. 20.09.06 in a rented building. Now Rajapalayam Sub Division is functioning with the following Police Station. 1) Rajapalayam South P.S. 2) Rajapalayam North P.S. 3) K.R.Raman P.S. 4) Seithur P.S. 5) Seithur Rural P.S. 6) Dhalavaipuram P.S. 7) AWPS, Rajapalayam 8) Traffic Unit. The following Police Stations are upgraded into Inspr. manned police stations as per Chief Office endt. C.No. 178878/GBI(2) dt. 14.06.97 & A1.9807/97 D.O. 816/97. 1) K.R.Raman P.S. 2) Seithur Rural P.S. (As per Range office C.No. A1/18305/98, the Inspector of Seithur Rural P.S. is doing duty at Mamsampuram P.S.) As 5 such all the Police stations are Inspector manned police stations. Taluk Police Station new designed quarters from Rajapalayam South, Rajapalayam North are constructed in a separate site 1 KM east of the Rajapalayam South P.S. Name of the Deputy Superintendent of Police : : Thiru K.S.Murugesan. Office Address :: Thenkasi Road, near Chokkarkovil, Rajapalayam. Telephone (office) : 04563 – 230746. V) Sattur Sub Division: The Sattur Sub-Division was created as a new sub-division bifurcated from Virudhunagar and Sivakasi Sub-Divisions Vide G.O. Ms. No.1818 Home (Police XIV) Department, dated 28.12.1993. It comprises of Sattur Town, Appayanaickanpatty, Irukkangudi, Alangulam, Elayirampanni and Vembakottai Police Station. After that 4 Police stations namely Sattur Taluk and Ammapatty were opened as per vide G.O. Ms. No. 668 (Home)/Pol. 14/ dated 27.06.2000, All Women Police Station was opened on 18.02.04 as per G.O. Ms. No. 13115/Home/pol. dept. date 09.12.04 and Traffic Police Station is functioning from 06.06.07 as per G.O. Ms. No. 203 dated 06.02.07 Home (Police XIV) department, DGP’s Chennai Letter in RC.No. 1865494/RA II (2)/2006 dated 07.09.06. Sattur Sub-Division Office is functioning in a recently constructed new type Government building from 25.05.2000 and is in good condition as Office cum Residence of Deputy Superintendent of Police. Inspector Sattur Circle is holding Sattur Town, Sattur Taluk Police Station, Inspector Irukkangudi Circle is holding Irukkangudi, Ammapatty and Appayanaickanpatty Police Stations, Inspector Alangualm Circle is holding Alangulam and Elayirampannai P.S, Vembakottai P.S, AWPS, Sattur and Traffic P.S are Inspector manned Police Station in this Sub-Division. Sattur Town, Appayanaickanpatty, Elayirampannai, Alangualm, Vembakottai Police Station and All Women Police Station are functioning in Government building and Traffic Police Station Sattur also functioning in the 1 st floor of AWPS.

    VIRUDHUNAGAR DISTRICT Virudhunagar district has no access to sea as it is covered by land on all the sides. It is surrounded by Madurai on the north, by Sivaganga on the north-east, by Ramanathapuram on the east and by the districts of Tirunelveli and Tuticorin on the south. Virudhunagar District occupies an area of 4288 km² and has a population of 1,751,548 (as of 2001). The Head-Quarters of the district Virudhunagar is located at the latitude of 9N36 and 77E58 longitude. Contrary to the popular saying that 'Virudhunagar produces nothing, but controls everything', Virudhunagar does produce a variety of things ranging from edible oil to plastic-wares. Sivakasi known as 'Little Japan' for its bustling activities in the cracker industry is located in this district. Virudhunagar was a part of Tirunelveli district before 1910, after which it became a part of Ramanathapuram district. After being grafted out as a separate district during 1985, today it has eight taluks under its wings namely Aruppukkottai, Kariapatti, Rajapalayam, Sattur, Sivakasi, Srivilliputur, Tiruchuli and Virudhunagar. The fertility of the land is low in Virudhunagar district, so crops like cotton, pulses, oilseeds and millets are mainly grown in the district. It is rich in minerals like limestone, sand, clay, gypsum and granite. Tourists from various places come to visit Bhuminathaswamy Temple, Ramana Maharishi Ashram, Kamaraj's House, Andal, Vadabadrasayi koi, Shenbagathope Grizelled Squirrel Sanctuary, Pallimadam, Arul Migu Thirumeni Nadha Swamy Temple, Aruppukkottai Town, Tiruthangal, Vembakottai, Pilavakkal Dam, Ayyanar falls, Mariamman Koil situated in the district of Virudhunagar. Minerals and Mining The District consists of red loam, red clay loam, red sand, black clay and black loam in large areas with extents of black and sand cotton soil found in Sattur and Aruppukottai taluks.
