Transfer Drawings from the 1960s Drawings from Transfer ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG Transfer Drawings from the 1960s ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG Transfer Drawings from the 1960s FEBRUARY 8– MARCH 17, 2007 41 EAST 57TH STREET, NEW YORK, NY 10022 FOREWORD For me, a roomful of Robert Rauschenberg's “Transfer” drawings from the 1960s evokes a powerful sense of dèjà vu. It's a complicated flash from the past, dense with images and newspaper headlines drawn from the events of the time. Saturn 5 rockets, Apache helicopters, ads for spark plugs, photos of astronauts mix with pictures of motorcycles, flashcubes, wristwatches and razor blades, all taken out of their original contexts and reworked into a web of startling new associations by an artist with a keen sense of popular history heightened by irony and a profound wit. Rauschenberg is like a mollusk in the sea of time, filtering and feeding upon everything that passes through his awareness and transforming it to suit his own ends, like an oyster secreting a pearl. He selects images from popular media as signifiers—telling icons of who we Americans are as a people, a nation and a culture. And the new linkages he creates make us question our assumptions about our identity: where did we come from, what do we really care about, where are we going? Rauschenberg's smart, deliberative art mirrors the American character: self-questioning and proud, defiant and wondering, but always hopeful. It is a great pleasure to re-familiarize the public with these drawings, important both artistically and historically. Many of them are being shown in the United States for the first time since they were originally exhibited in Paris at Galerie Ileana Sonnabend in 1968.

BOOM FOR REAL: THE SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT PRESENTS THE ART OF JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT IN GERMANY BASQUIAT BOOM FOR REAL FEBRUARY 16 – MAY 27, 2018 Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) is acknowledged today as one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. More than 30 years after his last solo exhibition in a public collection in Germany, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt is presenting a major survey devoted to this American artist. Featuring more than 100 works, the exhibition is the first to focus on Basquiat’s relationship to music, text, film and television, placing his work within a broader cultural context. In the 1970s and 1980s, Basquiat teamed up with Al Diaz in New York to write graffiti statements across the city under the pseudonym SAMO©. Soon he was collaging baseball cards and postcards and painting on clothing, doors, furniture and on improvised canvases. Basquiat collaborated with many artists of his time, most famously Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. He starred in the film New York Beat with Blondie’s singer Debbie Harry and performed with his experimental band Gray. Basquiat created murals and installations for New York nightclubs like Area and Palladium and in 1983 he produced the hip-hop record Beat Bop with K-Rob and Rammellzee. Having come of age in the Post-Punk underground scene in Lower Manhattan, Basquiat conquered the art world and gained widespread international recognition, becoming the youngest participant in the history of the documenta in 1982. His paintings were hung beside works by Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter and Cy Twombly.

(L-R, Dr. Theodosius Dobzhansky, Dr. Steve Bryant, Dr. Richard Lewontin, Dr. Steve Jones, Dr. TimEDITOR’S Prout. Photo NOTE by Dr. John Moore, courtesy of Steve Jones) Editor’s Note The publications cited in this volume specifically mention and/or discuss Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, locations and/or features known to occur within the present-day boundaries of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, biological, geological, paleontological or anthropological specimens collected from localities within the present-day boundaries of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, or events that have occurred within those same boundaries. This compendium is not now, nor will it ever be complete (barring, of course, the end of the Earth or the Park). Many, many people have helped to corral the references contained herein (see below). Any errors of omission and comission are the fault of the editor – who would be grateful to have such errors and omissions pointed out! [[email protected]] ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS As mentioned above, many many people have contributed to building this database of knowledge about Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. A quantum leap was taken somewhere in 2016-17 when Kevin Browne introduced me to Google Scholar – and we were off to the races. Elaine Tulving deserves a special mention for her assistance in dealing with formatting issues, keeping printers working, filing hard copies, ignoring occasional foul language – occasionally falling prey to it herself, and occasionally livening things up with an exclamation of “oh come on now, you just made that word up!” Bob Theriault assisted in many ways and now has a lifetime job, if he wants it, entering these references into Zotero.

MoMA © 2017 The Museum of Modern Art JIM DINES ETCHINGS The Museum of Modern Art An exhibition organized by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, with the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts, Washington, D.C., a federal agency About five years after they attended Ohio University in Athens together, Andrew Stasik invited his friend Jim Dine to make a print at Pratt Graphics Art Center in New York. A program at Pratt funded by the Ford Foundation had been established to encourage American artists to col laborate with professional European printers in the creation of lithographs and etchings. Even in the mid-twentieth century the word "etching" meant, to most people, the ubiquitous black-and-white views of famous buildings, homes, and landscapes, or to the connoisseur, the important images of Rembrandt and Whistler. Contemporary works by S. W. Hayter and his followers, because of the complex techniques utilized, were bet ter known by the generic term "intaglio" prints. After making a few litho graphs, Dine worked on his first intaglio prints in 1961 with the Dutch woman printmaker Nono Reinhold. They were simple drypoints of such familiar objects as ties, apples, and zippers.
