Francis Xavier Carty, RUCC president

Easter Sunday, as I write, is the time to welcome you to another season of cricket at Park Avenue. This, however, is a year without precedent. The entire globe has been engulfed by the terrible Covid-19 virus, a silent enemy that knows no borders, makes no distinction between the races, rich and poor, good and bad, young and old. There is definitely no cricket in Leinster before 28 May, but the entire season could be cancelled.

Cheers for the doctors, nurses and all front-line professionals and volunteers who bravely and generously put their lives at risk for the sick and the dying. Cheers also for those working in the essential industries and services. Cheers from my cocoon for all who are trying to follow the government safety advice. Nobody knows when the pestilence will pass but there will be life after it. We hope that lessons are being learnt – enhancement of loving communities, reduction of cruelty and injustice in the world, narrowing of the national gap between rich and poor and the recognition of the need to protect and save our planet.

This Annual, our 13th, reviews the 2019 season and the support we have received from the entire Railway Union family – members, players, officers, committees, vice presidents, parents, coaches, umpires, scorers, grounds and bar staff. We thank the wider community, schools, churches, advertisers, sponsors and the media and acknowledge the continuing support of CricketIreland, CricketEurope and CricketLeinster.

Congratulations to the 1st XI on winning the Irish National Cup, the Women’s team who made a welcome return to league and cup cricket and the tremendous enthusiasm of the youth teams ranging in age from eight to senior who created such fun in the club.

We may lose the entire 2020 season but that has been dwarfed by Covid-19. We are all in this together and the message must be - do not fear, have hope, take care, be safe and pray. There is life and cricket after it and the world may be a wiser and a better place.

2 Railway Union Cricket annual 2020

Stella Downes, Cricket Leinster president

I am delighted to welcome the members and friends of Railway Union to this shortened cricket season 2020. The financial effects of COVID-19 will be felt for the next few years so it is of vital importance that we all do as much as we can to support our local cricket clubs. I would also urge all members to support those who have advertised in this publication.

Railway has a long and proud history in Cricket Leinster as one of the original founding clubs. A lot of hard work and money has gone into the improvements in the square and the facilities and the Club is to be commended for this. I look forward to my visits this season and to the warm welcome I always receive.

I am particularly pleased to see the re-emergence of women’s cricket at Park Avenue. Railway was a powerhouse in women’s cricket for many years so I’m delighted to see women and girls wearing the green and yellow again. Cricket Leinster is doing everything possible to increase participation in our great sport and is a proud supporter of the 20 by 20 initiative.

At time of going to print we are unsure what our 2020 season will look like. Leagues will inevitably be shortened and competitions may follow different formats to the traditional ones. Please be assured that Cricket Leinster is committed to doing whatever is necessary to ensure that we get the maximum possible amount of cricket. I commend Philip Smith and his various committees for the work they have put in to make the best of a very trying situation.

When we DO manage to get out on the cricket field again, I wish you all a great season, filled with sunshine, camaraderie and sportsmanship.

David Penney, brother of Gordon, is doing research into the pre-1919 newspapers for Railway Union games and news. For instance, Irish Independent, 3 June 1907: Burglary at Sandymount: ”On Friday night or Saturday morning the pavilion of the Railway and Steampacket Athletic Union at Park Avenue, Sandymount, was broken into. Clothing, cricket balls, pads, gloves, etc, were stolen, as also several quarts of whiskey, some cigars, cigarettes”.

In the same year, Railway (R and SPU) Married XI played the Singles XI, the Singles winning by 100 all out to 85 all out, as reported in the Irish Times, 17 August. L Sully top scored for the Singles with 40 and R Molloy was best for the Married with 29. JKC Edwards took 7 for the Singles and Magill was best for the Married with 4 wickets.

Sandymount - truly the home of cricket in Ireland by Gerard Siggins

There are currently three senior clubs based around Sandymount village, and a fourth is barely a Max Sorensen six hit away from the parish boundary.

There have been others too – Monkstown CC played for a time in the old Irish Hockey Union grounds on Londonbridge Road, now Lansdowne LTC. Monkstown CC had no connection with the hockey or rugby clubs of the same name. In fact, none of the three were based in Monkstown!

3RD OBU was a very strong junior club who played a couple of times in the Leinster Senior Cup, their members included Arthur Vincent and Michael Halliday and they played up to the late 1960s in what is now Pembroke Wanderers HC. Pembroke Wanderers also had a junior cricket club once upon a time.

Sandymount CC were also a strong club, dating back into the 1860s. In fact, the very first double century recorded in Irish cricket was by James Gilligan of Sandymount CC in 1864, at home to County Wicklow, who featured one Charles Stuart Parnell.

Sandymount played right around the district up to 1930s before their final ground – known locally as Horan’s Field – was taken over for housing. It is roughly north of what is now Marine Drive.

CUS had a cricket ground in Bath Avenue, and there was also a cricket club called Tritonville but their base is unrecorded. In fact there was a soccer club of the same name who played in the Irish League – the pre-independence one that also featured Bohemians and Shelbourne. It is not known if they were linked to the cricket club.

8 Railway Union Cricket annual 2020

But besides YMCA, Pembroke and Railway Union, there was another club that had a ground of its own for many years and is still known the world over.

It is better known now for the epic rugby and soccer contests that have graced its turf, they aren’t the only sports to be featured at Lansdowne Road. American football, lacrosse, baseball, tennis, hockey, athletics and pigeon shooting were among the games played in the stadium, which was originally conceived as a multi-sports club.

In fact, for the first 20 years cricket was a vital part of the mix.

Back in August 1874 cricket was still the most widely played game in the land. Henry Dunlop had ambitions to challenge the supremacy of the Trinity club in its staging of lucrative annual matches against touring sides and English counties, and teamed up with publisher and sports goods seller John Lawrence to invite over the London Imperial Clowns for games against Eleven Gentlemen of Ireland.

It was a raucous Victorian version of , with the Clowns being actual circus performers, augmented by some useful professionals. The Gentlemen of Ireland was a strong selection, with several of the best players of the day, including celebrated scholar and wit JP Mahaffy, who taught Oscar Wilde; and Leland Hone, who later played test matches for England. The play was interspersed with musical interludes while the Clowns entertained the audience with acrobatic fielding.

The Irish Times man was unimpressed: ‘Many lovers of cricket objected to their game being burlesqued, and consequently absented themselves from a match where they expected nothing but buffoonery.’ Not quite so generous was the man from Saunders Newsletter, who thought ‘We may content ourselves now by hoping we ne’er may look upon its like again. Buffoonery, through the medium of cricket, may amuse the village Yokels, or create a laugh in the circus, but we doubt much whether Irish gentlemen will again be found arrayed against such competitors in such costume.’

9 Railway Union Cricket annual 2020

Sadly for Lawrence, there was little spectator interest in such frivolity either, and the weather was no help: the attendance was described as ‘wretched’. He lost £100 on his promotion, which was not repeated. Ironically, Dunlop’s rivals at the Leinster club put up a purse to attract the greatest cricketer of the age, W.G. Grace, who brought a huge crowd to Rathmines for a proper match a few weeks later.

Dunlop made strong efforts to establish a permanent cricket club at the ground. Lansdowne CC lasted several years but never reached the front rank in Dublin circles.

The stars of the early sides were the Exham brothers from Cork, who later found sporting fame in England. Arthur Exham took an impressive seventy-five wickets in the 1876 season, while Percy made one of only two centuries scored for Lansdowne, against Leinster at Rathmines. Percy was an excellent all-round sportsman who played football for Derby County and cricket for Derbyshire. Other notable members were internationals Horace Hamilton from Carlow and Freddie Lambkin from Cork.

Lansdowne were not immediately granted fixtures by the leading local sides - Leinster, Phoenix and the University - but eventually worked their way up the pecking order. By 1879 they were heavily praised in Lawrence’s annual for becoming competitive and having a good crease and abundant room. The pitches played better too, with more scores over a hundred, including one of 225 made against the leading Phoenix club.

However, within a couple of years it was struggling, having lost ‘its oldest and best members’. By 1881 the club was only able to play five games, compared to twenty-seven the year before, and all of them ‘away’ games. The committee complained it was ‘unable to get use of the ground as in the past’, and that the wickets were in a very bad state.

In 1884 Jack Hynes scored the only century recorded at the ground. Hynes also played for Trinity and Phoenix and won twenty-seven caps for Ireland. He was the most significant player of his day, labelled ‘the champion bat of Ireland’ by Wisden after scoring 113 for MCC.

10 Railway Union Cricket annual 2020

The club fell away in the 1890s, but the ground continued to be used for cricket, with Sandymount CC establishing a home there before it moved to Horan’s Field around 1907, while schools and junior clubs also hired it out.

Lansdowne CC was revived around 1910 – as a Ladies club. They played a handful of matches and rented out Railway Union for their practices.

The Irish Times staff XI played its junior league games on the Lansdowne back pitch throughout the twenties, but the last cricket match was played there in 1930.

Now Sandymount is down to a “mere” three grounds and the chances of a new one are slim – so let’s treasure what we have.

Railway Union v Ardmore, at Inch Railway Union by 19 runs Man of the Match: Hashir Sultan

Ardmore came up agonisingly short losing by just 19 runs. Railway opted to bat first but struggled to cope with the Bleachgreen side’s attack early on. Conor Brolly (3-31) and Gary Neely (3-35) had Ardmore well in the hunt as only Glenn Querl (21) offered much with the bat. Railway managed to rally late on and after Saad Ullah Khan made 38, the last two wickets crucially put on an additional 39 runs with Digamber Mishra making 16 and Andy Jackson 15 . The final total was 159 with Jared Wilson adding 2-30 for Peter Harrigan’s men.

Ardmore’s reply started slowly as well with Peet Pienaar’s 15 the best of the top order before Wilson made a timely 40 that included 4 sixes. At 91-4 in reply the North Western side were marginal favourites. However, Hashir Sultan (3-20), Prabhandu Kamal (2-22) and Kevin O’Brien (2-29) opened the game back up. Despite a gutsy 31 from Ciaran Curley and 17 from skipper Harrigan, Ardmore just couldn’t get over the line as the relieved Leinster outfit narrowly held on. (Courtesy CricketEurope)

Welcome and enjoyable return for Railway women’s team by Ali Nolan

2019 saw a welcome return to Cricket Leinster league and cup competitions for our women’s team. A nervous start away to Trinity saw the team record their first defeat but offered plenty of promise with the majority of the squad having never taken to a cricket field before. An away day victory against an equally-matched Greystones team saw the girls to their first win. The season took shape with the official unveiling of Brendan O’Brien and Hilary O’Reilly as team coaches.

A gritty team performance saw a home victory against a youthful Rush side looking to usurp their elders, with the Railway bowlers holding their nerve to keep the youngsters to just 49 runs and winning by 24. The squad of 18 kicked on from here, finishing the season with a five- out-of-six win rate with prodigious batting and bowling throughout the season from captain Ciara O’Brien the on-field highlight. Sam Bevis and Eimear Linehan struck up a successful partnership with Kate Dillon cleaning up around the field during the sweet away victory against our neighbours, Pembroke. The women finished the season in a very respectable fifth position, recording victories against three of the top four teams during the campaign.

Recruitment was key to the team’s success with a mix of cricket club members, crossover athletes from other sports within RU, external recruitment and support from our very young members proving key. The women had the side-line and on-field support of Peter le Roux, Toby O’Connell and Rob O’Brien with the boys lining out in pairs alongside their mums Jenny, Evelyn and Aoife and sister Meadh on a particularly special occasion during a friendly against Terenure.

The season was made possible with the unending support of Railway Union stalwarts Judy Cohen, Camilla O’Brien, Gillian Johnston and Elaine Coburn providing scoring, teas, advise and support. A sincere thank you to our sponsor, GH Letts & Co, who generously sponsored

Thank you to all our umpires who gave so generously of their time and offered insight and support during and after games. The coaching team proved to be an invaluable asset which aided the genuine on- field improvement of all players, so thank you to Ginger and Hilary for stepping up.

A very special thank you must go to the men’s captain, Ciaran Divney who spent so much of the summer of 2018 coaching and coaxing the women along to competing this year. He managed to stay cool and encouraging when things might have turned to frustration and offered plenty of support throughout the first full season, Thank you, Divo.

Another landmark year for youth cricket by Ciaran Divney, 1st XI captain

IT WAS another landmark year for youth cricket at Park Avenue with increased numbers, a full academy system in operation and plenty of fun along the way. There was a large increase in participation with our Under 8 team, whose enthusiasm was infectious all season, and their numbers grew impressively to 20 boys and girls aged between four and eight who all began to learn the basic skills of the sport through enjoyment-based games.

Honourable mention to our cubs team who won eleven out of eleven games played! In this case it is safe to say that our future is in safe hands! Our Under 11 team, captained by Rob O’Brien, just lost narrowly to neighbours Pembroke in the cup final in the final over in Park Avenue.

This was a special day for the club with hosting a cup final at home and also a 10 team Under 8 blitz simultaneously. The tea was put on by helpful parents and enjoyed by all. The kids trained particularly hard in the build-up to the cup and showed a lot of courage in a two-run semi- final win over Merrion. We have no doubt they will dust themselves off and come back stronger in 2020, and we look forward to watching them develop into fine cricketers.

Our Gerry Duffy Cup side qualified out of a difficult group to play Malahide in the semi-final on a sweltering day in Park Ave. They managed to win and with the help of parents travelled straight up to Leinster CC to play Merrion in the final. Unfortunately, we were on the wrong side of the result falling nine runs short of the target that was set for us. This group of young men have many promising days in the green and yellow ahead of them. The Under 15s unfortunately lost in the first round to a strong YMCA team. However, it marked the first of, hopefully, many 100s for Philippe le Roux.

2019 also marked another year of our academy system allowing players to train like professionals throughout the summer with morning academy sessions available before team sessions or matches in the afternoon. Our revamped structure from the previous year allowed

26 Railway Union Cricket annual 2020 us to cater more specifically to individual needs of players and this generated great enthusiasm around what we are hoping will be achieved in the near future. We had players in representative teams through the various age groups:

U11: Peter le Roux, Robert O’Brien & Johnny Woods

U13: Rory Honan

U15: Philippe le Roux, Mark Canniffe

U17/U19: Alex Stiles

Alex was also a member of the Ireland Under 19 squad to participate in the Under 19 cricket world cup qualifiers and he put in some great performances including a 50 with the bat. It would be hard to talk about 2019 without mentioning Chad Laycock, the South African exchange student who was brought to Railway through the Cricket Leinster scheme. He was an outstanding addition to the club. His feats included two youth level centuries, more than 300 runs for our 1st XI and taking the new ball bagging some priceless scalps along the way. We are thankful to have had Chad with us over the season and happy to have helped aid his development as a man and a cricketer. Special thanks to the le Roux family for hosting him during his visit.

Finally, a thank you to all parents, players, supporters and the youth committee for helping to grow the infectious sport that we all love to the next generation to ensure that Railway will have a big part to say in Irish cricket in the years to come. Look forward to seeing all existing members and hopefully some new ones down in ‘the patch’ throughout 2020.

Railway Union men and ladies win national indoor hockey finals to qualify for Europe in 2021

The finals, played in Galway’s Kingfisher Hall, resulted in contrasting fashions with the women always in control against Muckross and experienced campaigners Hannah de Burgh White and Emma Smyth striking in the second half for a 2-0 win. The men’s final against Three Rock Rovers was a different matter for Railway as they trailed 3-0 inside the first 12 minutes before Bjorn Daase, a German guest for Railway, who plays outdoor for Pembroke, not only netted a hat-trick in normal time to force a 3-3 draw, but lobbed in the only goal of the shoot-out for 1-0 success which, in tandem with Stephen O’Keeffe’s three saves, saw the Sandymount club stun their fellow Dubliners. Tribute to Gavin Ralston, Jr

“The one thing I really miss is cricket”, he said once. That was said in the context of Gavin’s decision at the age of 21 to give up playing sport to follow his passion in life, music. Unfortunately the demands of a guitar teacher took over Saturdays and Sundays. Cricket to Gavin meant Railway Union. Gavin loved cricket and as soon as he was big enough, a pair of whites and a bat were acquired. As the son of an active member, himself and his brother Aongus spent many happy hours at Park Avenue. It was in truth a second home. When I suggested at one stage that I might give up cricket to spend more time with the family, it was met with a howl of protest and was soon dropped. He had many happy memories of Railway, captaining the Under 13 and Under 15 XIs. Railway was always a source of fun and entertainment to him and by Gavin Ralston Jr, watching Ireland v him. He happily chatted away to wives Australia at Clontarf or girlfriends of players, or anyone else who would listen, walking around the boundary. Letting children off on their own for extended periods would probably be frowned upon today, but he loved it and everybody connected with cricket in Railway. And Railway taught him to be a team player, which he never forgot. Could I conclude by thanking all those kind members who have sent messages of support. Although this is not a job I ever contemplated doing, the fact that he is so well remembered amongst his former club mates is a tribute in itself.

GAVIN RALSTON

Remembering Jim McNally by Shevaun McNally

Jim was born in 1960, the son of Jim and Joan McNally, brother of Shevaun and Diarmad, and lived in Nutley, Donnybrook. St. Michael’s was his primary school and he boarded in St. Gerard’s for secondary, where he nurtured a love of soccer and cricket. He studied business in Trinity before opting to train as a chartered accountant. London was where he lived and worked in the 80s, returning to Dublin to study for his MBA in UCD before managing one of the Wood-Printcraft companies of which we had a family connection. The interest in WP was sold in 1999 and he retired early, enjoying from then on a rich and diverse life, choosing to involve himself in any projects that interested him for personal and social reward.

He was an intelligent man, an avid reader, knowledgeable on many topics and a popular and successful member of pub quiz teams. He studied history and art for pleasure, and would occupy himself travelling to England buying and selling fine art, as he would say “Buy in Barnsley and sell in Chelsea”. He had a great collection of model railways, and assembled enormous and amazing displays of intricate Lego models each Christmas for the children of the family to enjoy on their visits.

He was a generous host, witty and intelligent conversationalist and good company. He had an appreciation for and quite a collection of fine wines, taking great pleasure in bringing vintage wine which he would have laid down for many years to a celebratory dinner. He loved nothing

50 Railway Union Cricket annual 2020

more than a party or celebration and there were many in Nutley over the years. A favourite of his was the annual Halloween party where he would spend weeks gathering the fireworks and executing a cracking display of noise and colour all timed to loud music.

Music was very important in his life, he had a good singing voice, liked guitar, keyboards and ukulele. He was always happy to perform at karaoke and had fun playing in a band “Mid Life Crisis” with his friends. He enjoyed cricket in Railway Union, tennis in Bective and Mount Pleasant and followed his interests watching motor racing in Monaco and Silverstone, cricket in Barbados. He would get groups together to share the pleasure of attending rugby matches, concerts and skiing holidays, and was the supplier of the daft hats or silly jumpers for his friends to wear.

He gave his family and his very good friends the greatest gifts of his time, effort and thoughtfulness and he is very much missed.

Jim passed away in August 2019, suddenly, in the home that he loved, aged only 58.

Footnote: Jim was a more than useful all-round player in the lower teams where his bowling was of the trundling variety, famous in Railway. He could bowl over after over on a sunny day and keep taking wickets. He enhanced the cricket and social experience for all who knew him. (FXC)

Derek Scott Archive launched

Thanks to the life-time work of Derek Scott, Cricket Leinster has complete senior playing records for club cricket going back to the start of the senior league in 1919. These records are contained in a series of journals and notebooks that Derek put together during his life and have been passed on to Cricket Leinster by his family. His hand- written records provide an account of every player who took part in senior cricket and every league and cup match played since the senior competitions started in 1919. Brought up to the present day, it provides details of over 5,500 careers, nearly 25,000 annual player records, and around 9,000 matches. Records from the Derek Scott Archive have been digitised and can now be accessed on the website.

To access the Archive Go to Menu / Archive and you will be presented with four panels:

Competitions – Players – Representative – Honour Boards

Under Competitions: can be found details on the winners of all Open Competitions since 1919. There are also details on the Leinster winners of the Irish Senior Cup.

Under Players: you can find the Career Records for Senior Players as well as the detailed player records on a year by year basis. You can also find information on the various individual awards for batting, bowling, keeping, fielding and all-rounders.

Representative: at this point provides the player records from the Guinness Cup era [1996 – 2002]

Honour Boards: top performances in Batting [5000r], Wickets [500w], Wicket Keeping [250d] and Fielding [200c] and a special list for Modern Bowlers [250w] covered by overs restrictions.

You are able to filter records to find the individual, year, clubor competition you want.

Explanations and Gaps

The senior player records are complete back to 1919 except for the records from Leinster and YMCA prior to 1989. These are being worked on at the moment and will be put up as soon as they become available.

At the moment we have only put up open competition records but over the next few months we will add women’s and youth/schools details.

There are more records to go up and these will be added over time. Given the volume there will inevitably be some omissions and mistakes and anyone who has a query or question can contact Eddie Lewis at [email protected].

Finally, we are hoping to add background material to the main records. In a small number of cases we have added a report on a Cup Final or League Competitions with photos of the team and scorecards where available. If anyone has photos of winning teams [and names if possible] and sends them to the e/mail address above we will attach to the appropriate record.
