Futurity for Baffert Xy Jet Airs in Mr. Prospector SUNDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2015 ONE ‘MOR’ FUTURITY FOR BAFFERT X Y JET AIRS IN MR. PROSPECTOR X Y Jet (Kantharos), a hard-luck second in the GIII Hutcheson S. at Gulfstream in January, turned Saturday’s GIII Mr. Prospector S. into a one-horse race with a powerful front-running display to earn his first stakes victory. Emerging with the early advantage after an opening quarter in :21.92, the 2-1 shot started to get away from them after a :44.92 half and hit the top of the lane with a large cushion. Pilot Emisael Jaramillo gave him a few reminders just to be safe, but nobody was ever getting to X Y Jet, who hit the line 9 1/2 lengths to the good in a snappy 1:08.56. Longshot Grande Shores (Black Mambo) tagged C. Zee (Elusive Bluff) for second. Cont. p4 Mor Spirit | Benoit Photo CAMPANOLOGIST SUCCUMBS TO COLIC Michael Lund Petersen’s Mor Spirit (Eskendereya) came Gestut Fahrhof resident and four-time group 1 winner charging late to collar stablemate Toews on Ice (Archarcharch) Campanologist (Kingmambo--Ring of Music, by Sadler's and provide Hall of Famer Bob Baffert with his record eighth Wells) succumbed to colic on his way to Germany from victory in the GI Los Alamitos Futurity Saturday. Hammered down to 3-5 favoritism, Mor Spirit caboosed the bunched up field early with just I’malreadythere (Crown of Thorns) trailing in the rear. Running two wide, he maintained that position as 25-1 shot Frank Conversation (Quality Road) ticked off opening splits of :23.09 and :47.12 while under pressure from Toews on Ice. Going well under a motionless Gary Stevens, the dark bay readily responded when popped the question at the top of the lane, and unleashed a powerful rally to take down his stablemate and win going away. “Gary knows how to ride this horse,” commented Baffert, who became the all-time leading trainer at Los Alamitos by stakes wins Saturday. “In the race at Churchill Downs [the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. Nov. 28] I didn’t want to take a chance of taking him back and getting mud kicked in his face, so we sent him up in there. I just told Gary today ride him like you usually do and let him sit and finish. Turning for home it was a good feeling. I knew I was going to win the race, just didn’t know with which one. He has the long, lean elegance of a classic Thoroughbred, reminiscent of his sire Colonel John and second damsire, Canadian Champion With Approval, yet Airoforce received precocious speed from his damsire Cuvee. Airoforce was victorious at distances ranging between 6 1/2-furlongs and 1 1/16-miles. Although he competed mainly on turf, Airoforce won a key stake over dirt. His immediate pedigree has dirt and turf attributes. A magnificent looking $350,00 OBS April sales purchase campaigned by John Oxley, Airoforce flashed precociousness and speed in his debut, drawing away to win a six-furlong turf sprint by 3 1/4-lengths in a sharp 1:10.34, just a second off the Kentucky Downs track record. Airoforce dominated the Dixiana Bourbon Stakes (G3) by 2 1/2-lengths over a full field of fourteen over the Keeneland turf, including Camelot Kitten, Surgical Strike. Airoforce faced a full field of high-class youngsters as the favorite in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). and missed the victory by a neck, after racing in traffic and being distracted in the stretch.

CHURCHILL DOWNS Saturday 05/02/2015 Forecast High Partly Sunny 75 F Low Precip: 12% 54 F THE WIZARD'S CRYSTAL BALL # 3 YOCKEY'S WARRIOR (Race 2) He apparently was still feeling the effects of his monstrous victory at first asking on April 4 at Keeneland, finishing second that day. Yockey's Warrior was a mere shell of himself at Keeneland last month, setting the pace over a track surface that was extremely unkind to frontrunners and/or runners racing towards the rail. Regardless, Yockey's Warrior held on well in the stretch to salvage the place once displaced on the front end by the winner, and he was clearly second best. He projects to compete over a fairer surface today, switching to Churchill Downs while getting a huge upgrade in riders to Joel Rosario. He looms the controlling speed once again, drawing an a beneficial inside post. #3 CARVE (Race 4) He has had the misfortune of competing against Race Day not once, but twice in both of his starts off a layoff in Arkansas. In their second go-round on April 11, he gave the aforementioned runner all he could handle past midstretch, but was unable to match strides with that dual graded stakes winner when it mattered in the final yards, settling for a sharp second place finish. Carve profits immeasurably from some class relief today and the absence of Race Day as well, running in a high-end optional claiming contest. A drop in class to face similar rivals at a flat mile resulted in a going away victory as the post time favorite over this track in 2014.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2019 INTO MISCHIEF=S TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR TRAINER GARY SHERLOCK CROWNING MOMENT by Dan Ross Trainer Gary Sherlock passed away Sunday from lung cancer at the age of 73, and in what should be no surprise to any who knew him, the tributes that have poured his way all point to one unifying theme: a universal respect and admiration among his peers in California=s racing community. Sherlock was born into the business--his father was a jockey, while his mother was a racing official. He was a mainstay of the industry since the 1950s, during which time he wore many hats. Trainer of both Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds. Assistant trainer. Pinhooker. Horsebreaker. Insurance salesman. As a Quarter Horse trainer, Sherlock won scores of races at Los Alamitos, including the 1977 Los Alamitos Derby with Azure Three.
