Flyff and Rappelz Launched in New Regions Tokyo, Japan – June 2, 2009 – Gala Inc. today announced that the open beta test for the Brazil service of Flyff, an online game developed by Seoul-based consolidated subsidiary Aeonsoft Inc was launched today June 2, 2009. The open beta test for the Thailand service of Rappelz, an online game developed by Seoul-based consolidated subsidiary nFlavor Corp., was also launched on the same date. 1. Size of Brazilian and Thai markets The number of broadband internet users in Brazil in 2007 was about 6.7 million, a 40% increase over 2006. While Thailand has only 913 thousand, the growth rate is about 870%. ABSTRACT CASHMAN, SHAUN LEE. The Rhetoric of Immersion in Video Game Technologies. (Under the direction of Dr. Victoria Gallagher.) Immersion is a crucial concept for understanding how people engage, interact, and understand mediated messages. This work examines the concept of immersion within video game technologies. It argues that immersion is a rhetorical function and that we can understand how a media text induces immersion using rhetorical theory. Immersion itself is defined as a unique, multifaceted relationship that forms between a person and a media message that acts on the body, mind, and emotions of a person and is intrinsically tied to the unique experience of a medium. To that end, video games are distinct in that they are comprised of a game, screen, computer, and interface. These four components allow us to understand the medium as a communicative act that can be studied through rhetoric. Justified in existing game and media theory, this work constructs a rhetorical model of immersion that highlights seven rhetorical means through which video game technologies can immerse. The rhetorical model of immersion is then compared to two existing immersion models through and analysis of five distinct video. Through this analysis the rhetorical model shows its viability by comparison and its contributions to our understanding of immersion in video game technologies. Vietnamese Service of Flyff Commercialized Tokyo, Japan – July 22, 2009 – Gala Inc. today announced that Aeonsoft Inc., Seoul-based consolidated subsidiary of Gala Inc., launched the full commercial service of the Vietnamese version of Flyff on July 22, 2009. 1. Overview of Flyff Flyff is currently provided in the U.S., Europe, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, the Philippines, and some South American countries. The Vietnamese service will be run by VDC-Net2E, a local partner which Aeonsoft signed with in March 2009. VDC-Net2E is a subsidiary of Vietnam Data Communications Company (VDC), Vietnam's leading internet service provider. It runs an extremely popular portal which boasts 2.3 million registered users and an average CCU of 10,000. In Vietnam, services such as this one require government approval prior to launch, so the waiting period was put to good use by conducting two open beta tests. The full commercial service was launched on July 22, following the completion of these tests and receipt of approval. Vietnam's online games market was estimated at 20 million USD in 2006, 50 million USD in 2007, and is projected to reach 80 million USD in 2010. The rapid growth of the number of companies working in the sector also shows that the market has great promise, with 83 in 2007 up from 10 in 2002. 2.
