This is regarded as historic landmark in bilateral relations of both countries, as volume of bilateral trade for first time has touched $80 billion, well above the $71.18 billion registered in 2016. India, Pak to free each other's disabled, elderly prisoners On 7/03/2018, India and Pakistan agreed on a proposal to release each other's mentally challenged, women and elderly prisoners above the age of 70. The proposal was suggested by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to Pakistani envoy Sohail Mahmood in October 2017. Pakistan said through such initiatives the two countries could "embark on the road to a comprehensive dialogue". India seals agreement with UN to build homes for Nepal quake victims In a reconstruction bid for earthquake-ravaged Nepal, the Government of India has sealed an agreement with United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) to build 50, 000 homes for quake victims. The agreement signed will provide socio- technical facilitation to the earthquake victims of Gorkha, the epicenter of 2015’s earthquake and the Nuwakot district of Nepal. National News Competition Commission of India (CCI) imposed fine of 54 Crore rupees on Jet Airways, IndiGo, SpiceJet for unfair business practices The Competition Commission of India (CCI) imposed a fine of over Rs. 54 crore on Jet Airways, IndiGo, and SpiceJet over alleged cartelisation, unfair business practices with respect to fixing fuel surcharge on cargo transport. Jet Airways was fined ₹39.81 crore while the penalties on IndiGo and SpiceJet are ₹9.45 crore and ₹5.1 crore, respectively. Deadline for Ayushman Bharat logo competition extended The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare extended till March 18 the deadline for the competition to design a logo and tagline for the Ayushman Bharat programme. The Ayushman Bharat programme is the world’s largest government-funded health programme that includes the National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS), under which 10 crore poor families will be provided medical coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year. India ranks 52 in Mastercard women entrepreneurs index India ranked 52 among 57 countries studied for the Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs (MIWE), according to the findings of its second edition. Ghana (46.4 percent) ranks first in the world with the highest number of women business owners, followed by Russia (34.6 percent), Uganda (33.8 percent), New Zealand (33 percent) and Australia (32.1 percent). PM launches National Nutrition Mission, and pan India expansion of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao On the occasion of International Women’s Day, PM Narendra Modi launched the National Nutrition Mission and Pan India Expansion of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) covering all 640 districts of the Country at a mega event held at Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan. The Prime Minister also awarded ten districts for showing outstanding performance in the areas of effective community engagement, enforcement of PC&PNDT Act and enabling education of the girl child. ‘Vision for Future’ event to marks 70 years of Indo-Russia ties held In New Delhi An event named ‘Vision for Future’ was held in New Delhi to commemorate 70 years of the Indo-Russia ties. The event sought to expose the youth to the dynamic opportunities of cooperation between the two countries. The program inaugurated at the Pravasi Bhartiya Kendra was organised by the Ministry of External Affairs (Eurasia Division) and the International Federation of Indo-Russian Youth Clubs. State News Delhi Police launches ‘all women patrolling squad’ The South District Police in Delhi launched an ‘all women patrolling squad’ on March 8, 2018, on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The squad named ‘Knightingale’ has been formed to ensure safety and security of women at public places. The squad comprises 16 women personnel, aged between 20-35 years, in the ranks of sub-inspectors and constables who have been trained in unarmed combat and driving. Mumbai ranks 47th on global ‘city wealth index’: Report According to the independent global property consultancy Knight Frank’s Wealth Report 2018, Mumbai ranked 47th on the “city wealth index” among 314 cities in the world. The “city wealth index” is drawn from four major indicators — wealth, investments, lifestyle and future. Guangzhou, a city in China, tops the list with property prices appreciating by 27.4% in the last one year. Swachh Shakti 2018 to be held in Lucknow The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, in association with the Government of Uttar Pradesh, is organizing a Women’s Convention – called Swachh Shakti 2018 – on International Women’s Day, at Lucknow. 8000 women sarpanches, 3000 women Swachhagrahis, 2000 mahilasamakhyas from Uttar Pradesh and women sarpanches from across the country have been invited to recognize their outstanding contribution towards making Swachh Bharat a reality in rural India. Last year, 6000 women sarpanches from across the country had assembled in Gujarat on the occasion of International Women’s Day under the banner Swachh Shakti 2017. Telangana announces holiday for female staff on Women’s Day The Telangana government has announced a casual leave on March 8 for its female employees on the occasion of International Women’s Day. Meanwhile, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has also announced that it will deploy an all-women staff on at least one of its toll booths in every state and Union Territory. Banking & Economy Canara HSBC OBC Life Insurance partners Can Fin Homes to sell policies Canara HSBC Oriental Bank of Commerce Life Insurance has joined hands with Can Fin Homes for a three-year corporate agency tie up to sell its policies to potential home buyers. All the life insurance products of the company would be made available to customers of Can Fin Homes. FICCI, NITI Aayog tie-up for ‘women entrepreneurship platform’ The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) has tied-up with NITI Aayog for the Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP) initiative. Through a joint programme, Ficci and NITI Aayog shall provide hand-holding, mentorship, capacity building, scaling up and networking support to 100 technology led women enterprises over a period of five years. RBI slaps Rs 40 lakh penalty on SBI for flouting fake note norms The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 40 lakh on State Bank of India for non-compliance of its directions on detection and impounding of counterfeit notes. An RBI notification issued from Mumbai today informs that the action is based on deficiencies in regulatory compliance found at two of the bank’s currency chests. Awards & Honours Architect BV Doshi becomes 1st Indian to win Pritzker Prize Architect Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi has become the first Indian to win the Pritzker Prize, the highest award in architecture. Calling the 90-year-old’s works “poetic”, the foundation commended him for respecting the eastern culture and working towards enhancing the quality of life in India. Doshi’s most noted works include a low-cost housing project in Indore which accommodates 80,000 people. The award was announced by Tom Pritzker of the Chicago-based Hyatt Foundation. Justice Gita Mittal conferred ‘Nari Shakti’ award Delhi High Court acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal has been conferred with “Nari Shakti Puraskar”. Justice Mittal is one of the 30 individual awardees who have been selected for the Puraskar. This year, 30 individual awardees and nine institutional awardees are selected for these Puraskars. The Ministry of Women and Child Development announces these national level awards for eminent women, organisations and institutions. Appointments & Resignations Vivek R Wadekar was appointed as the new Special Director in the Enforcement Directorate (ED) Vivek R Wadekar was appointed as the new Special Director in the Enforcement Directorate (ED) by the government. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued an order appointing the officer of the Income Tax Department to the new post. He has been appointed for the tenure of five years. The ED is the central investigative agency, under the Union finance ministry, that enforces the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) in the country. Science & Technology TCS ranked as fastest growing IT services brand in 2018 Tata Consultancy Services has been named as the fasted growing IT services brand in the world in an assessment done by Brand Finance, the world's leading brand valuation firm. According to Brand Finance IT Services 15 annual report for 2018, TCS now has a total brand value of USD 10.391 billion - a growth of 14.4% from the last year's total of USD 9.081 billion, with an increase of USD 1.309 billion. The new value is the fastest incremental growth of all companies in the industry and places TCS in the top three most valuable brands in the global IT services sector along with IBM and Accenture. Important Days International Women’s Day International Women’s Day is a worldwide event that celebrates the achievements of women everywhere. This year’s celebration comes at the heels of an unprecedented movement for women’s rights as 2018 marks 100 years since women gained the vote after the suffragette movement. There have also been global campaigns in the form of #MeToo and #TimesUp – bringing sexual harassment and equal pay to the forefront of the agenda. Since August, 2008, Justice Gita Mittal has been a member of the Governing Council of the National Law University, Delhi. She is also a member of the Governing Council of the Indian Law Institute, New Delhi since 2013 and has been nominated to its Administrative Committee. Justice Mittal is presently chairing the court committees on the Delhi High Court’s Mediation and Conciliation Centre as well as the committee monitoring the Implementation of Judicial Guidelines for Dealing with Cases of Sexual Offences and Child Witnesses.
