Numbers 6:24 May Adonai bless you and protect you. May Adtonai deal kindly and graciously with you. May Adonai bestow Divine favor upon you and grant you peace. Linking Our Text to Modern Israel The priestly benediction originates in this week’s Torah portion as the blessing Moses and Aaron were instructed to recite to the Israelite people. The intricacies of the text, still used today as a blessing in many contexts, are unique and remarkable for this ancient Biblical text. Though this is not considered an actual poem found in the Torah - the classic ones being Song of the Sea, Song at the Spring, and Moses Final Song - the shape of this blessing points to the fact that indeed it is poetry at Parody in Israeli Prayer its best. The phrases build one upon the other from 3 words in the first line, to 5 Poems in the second and finally 7 in the third. The number of letters go from 15 to 20 to 25. Furthermore, parallelism, so frequently found throughout other Biblical poetry The Flourishing of Post- is present from line to line, each intentionally expanding on the previous verse. Amichai Poetry - Tablet Clearly, this is not ordinary narrative or prose, rather it is an intentionally crafted Magazine Jan. 10, 2012 set of verses. To date, archaeologists and historians consider it to be the oldest pre- Chaim Guri exilic text to be found within Israel (from around 6th C BCE). -

As President and a Trustee of the Asper Foundation, she is a driving force behind projects in Canada and Israel and spearheaded the creation of the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her commitment to the Hebrew University ranges from serving on the Board of Governors to being a member of the Canadian Friends National Board. The Asper Centre for Entrepreneurship at the School of Business Administration continues to flourish thanks to the support of the Asper Foundation; in addition Gail is passionate about student support, the Rothberg International School and the Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada. Gail received her law degree from the University of Manitoba in 1984, and joined Canwest Global Communications Corporation as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary in 1989, a position she held until 2008. She is currently President of the Canwest Foundation. Today Gail’s community involvement includes numerous positions to which she brings her passion and dedication. Daughter of the late Izzy Asper, she realized his dream to build the Canadian Museum of Human Rights, serving as a member of its inaugural Board and as Chair of its National Campaign. She is Director Emerita of the Centre for Cultural Management at the University of Waterloo and is a past Chair of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Winnipeg. Gail has also served on many boards within the Winnipeg Jewish Community. -

"ONSTAGE BE PEACOCKS AND OFFSTAGE BE MODEST"? THE DILEMMA OF ISRAELI ORTHODOX ACTRESSES Reina Rutlinger Reiner and Sarit Cofman-Simhon For over two decades, orthodox Israeli women have been creating theatre despite traditional Jewish reservations against it and despite the fact that theatre involves a certain degree of exhibitionism rather than the tsniut (modesty) demanded of them, particularly in the public sphere.1 A source for Jewish thought about tsniut is Micah 6:8 “Walk humbly with thy G-d” as interpreted by Rabbi Eliezer in Tractate Succah 49b of the Babylonian Talmud, whose explicit application of this as a principle to both public and private spheres is then further elaborated in halacha (religious law), in terms of dress, speech etc. This article highlights the unresolved inherent contradiction between theatre and tsniut, and how orthodox women negotiate and combine modesty with theatre performance. It focuses on two case studies of groups of orthodox actresses who have performed before mixed audiences (men and women), thus pushing the dilemma of modesty to its limit. It shows how their choice not to appear only before their own gender influenced their acting and impacted the concept of modesty in various ways ranging from being stricter than the rabbis to overlooking certain norms of modesty in order to perform and engage in political activism. Our research shows that many orthodox Jewish actresses and audience members disregard the assumption of aesthetic distance between performers and character; they do not accept the possibility of being like “peacocks on stage and modest offstage” (as one non-religious actress puts it). -

These findings had now been published on September 17. The Commission condemned Jordan for the killing of the six Israel soldiers which had given rise to the Israeli action. The Israel Government now expected H.M.G. in all fairness to condemn Jordan. There was an additional reason. The Israel Government feared that we were trying to appease the Arabs at Israel's expense, a situation which they were not' prepared to accept. 2. I took note of the Ambassador's request, saying that he would not expect me to give him an immediate reply. I asked him, however, to consider whether a statement condemnatory to Jordan was likely to improve our chances of restraining Jordan, as he knew we were trying to do. -

Ferziger Received: 4 March 2017 / Accepted: 15 March 2017 / Published online: 24 April 2017 Ó Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2017 According to Ian Lustick, Israel has built and, in turn, is dominated by an overemphasized Holocaust ethos that he calls ‘‘Holocaustia.’’ To be sure, his extensive essay describes three other distinct Holocaust narratives that emerged in the course of Israel’s history. But the central focus of the article is on this fourth one, its assumed domination of contemporary Israeli discourse, and its implications for the Israel-Arab conflict. As Lustick argues: Contemporary Israel is marked unmistakably with ‘‘Holocaustia,’’ by which I mean a universe of discourse based on the centrality in Jewish life of the Holocaust, its effects, and memories of it. This article explores Zion in the Bible, aggadot, customs and laws, ancient and modern poetry, and through the Zionist movement itself. Foreword Yearning for Zion is the root of what it means to be a Jew. "Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto the land that I will show thee" (Genesis 12:1) this is the Divine command to our Father Abraham; this is where the connection between being a Jew, and being a person whose homeland is the land of Israel, begins. For Jews all over the globe, the Land of Israel is the spiritual homeland. For those of us who live in the State of Israel, the land of Israel is our spiritual and physical home. After 2000 years of exile, we have arrived in our homeland a homeland which was not handed to us on a silver platter. Another people also loves this land, and fate has brought them to live here for hundreds of years. For decades we have extended a hand in peace and partnership. It is our hope that love for the Land of Israel will bring to all those who live within it, and those who love from afar, a life of peace, fraternity and prosperity. Indeed, may it be that "From Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of G-d from Jerusalem." Amen! Introduction The compelling magnetism which Zion as the land of Israel, as Jerusalem, or as the site of the Holy Temple has for the people of Israel, called so though they are scattered all over the world, is as puzzling as it is strong. -

The Knesset Building in Giv’at Ram: Planning and Construction Originally published in Cathedra Magazine, 96th Edition, July 2000 Written by Dr. Susan Hattis Rolef Introduction Already in the early days of modern Zionism, it was clear to those who envisioned the establishment of a Jewish State, and those who acted to realize the vision, that once it was established, it would be a democracy, in which a parliament would be built. In his book Altneuland (written in 1902), Theodor Herzl, described the parliament of the Jewish state in Jerusalem in the following words: “[A] great crowd was massed before (the Congress House). The election was to take place in the lofty council chamber built of solid marble and lighted from above through matte glass. The auditorium seats were still empty, because the delegates were still in the lobbies and committee rooms, engaged in exceedingly hot discussion…" 1 In his book Yerushalayim Habnuya (written in 1918), Boris Schatz, who had established the Bezalel school of arts and crafts, placed the parliament of the Jewish State on Mount Olives: "Mount Olives ceased to be a mountain of the dead… it is now the mountain of life…the round building close to [the Hall of Peace] is our parliament, in which the Sanhedrin sits".2 When in the 1920s the German born architect, Richard Kaufmann, presented to the British authorities his plan for the Talpiot neighborhood, that was designed to be a Jerusalem garden neighborhood, it included an unidentified building of large dimensions. When he was asked about the meaning of the building he relied in German: "this is our parliament building". -
