This one-week summer camp is backed by AAUW’s research and designed to make STEM fields exciting and accessible to girls in middle school — the age when girls’ participation in these fields statistically drops. For many girls, the weeklong camp sparks their curiosity and places them on a path toward success. AAUW of California member Marie Wolbach founded Tech Trek in 1998 with the help of an AAUW Community Action Grant. Today AAUW Tech Trek operates at 22 different sites around the nation. A 2013 survey of AAUW Tech Trek alumnae from California demonstrates the program’s lasting effects on many levels, including interest and confidence in STEM fields, decision to pursue those fields, and future career plans. AAUW Tech Trek alumnae surpass the national average in most advanced math and science courses: Camps are held in the summer at campuses around the country. All campers are nominated by their seventh-grade math and science teachers. Girls then apply and are selected by a committee. SAVE THE DATE - 12/14 holiday luau Mahjong Report Our annual Mahjong Tournament was held last Thursday September 26 at the Fallbrook VFW. It was a great success! We raised $1000. The success came because we had many volunteers and many awesome prizes. Thank yous are due to so many of our members who worked on collecting donations, setting up, cleaning up and playing. Araxy spent many hours on the phone drumming up players. She filled 12 tables. So, a big THANK YOU to Araxy. Diane Reeder and Alice Orr headed up the prize committee. Along with their committee members, they donated or collected 30 marvelous items. Elizabeth Leader took care of collecting money $1300, paying our bills, and gave us the good news of netting a $1000. Marilee Ragland was the Queen of Hearts as she walked around selling our tickets to players and helpers for the drawing. Jeanie Curtright worked with Louis of the VFW to provide a very tasty lunch and at a good price! And a special thanks for all of you: Lini Bennett, Maura Marti, Marj Freda, Young Milton, Carlene Friesen, Nancy Heins-Glaser, Leslie Ibaven, Terri Keyes, Bobbie Miller, Young Milton, Margie Mosavi, Julie Norberg, Charlotte Seidman, Maria Viernes, Carolyn Thom, Gina Abdelrahman, I hope I didn't miss anyone.     End of the Rainbow by Peter Quilter Peter Quilter’s play, which is part concert–part drama, tells of the final, sad decline of Judy Garland, following a lifetime of abuse, addictions, and attempted suicides. Supposedly, she’s on the way to a full recovery and has booked a six-week run at London’s Talk of the Town nightclub, encouraged by her fiancée and manager, Mickey Deans, and in cahoots with her gay pianist friend Anthony. Despite Judy’s best intentions, as the run gets underway, she cannot suppress her destructive streak that has characterised her life up until this point. Quilter’s play is a powerful, part fictionalised, exploration of the final days of this lonely and exploited star, whose only way of travelling over the rainbow is through drugs.
