2018 Bloomsburg Football Notes (GAME 6 vs west chester) 3 OFFENSIVE CAREER BESTS NOTES PASSING YARDS LAST WEEK Duffy Gilhool 186 at Lock Haven (10/29/16) Bloomsburg suffered its worst loss in six years as it dropped a 44-10 decision at Kutztown in front of Erik Benjamin 173 vs Edinboro (9/8/18) nearly 6,700 fans on Family Day at . The setback was the Huskies’ third straight PASS COMPLETIONS to the Golden Bears in the series and it dropped Bloomsburg to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC Erik Benjamin 18 vs Edinboro (9/8/18) East. Kutztown, meanwhile, improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in divisional play. Bloomsburg’s last Duffy Gilhool 14 at Lock Haven (10/29/16) loss by at least 34 points came at Shippensburg in the opening round of the 2012 NCAA Division II PASS ATTEMPTS playoffs when the Huskies suffered a 58-20 loss to the Red Raiders on November 17, 2012. It was Erik Benjamin 36 vs Edinboro (9/8/18) the third consecutive setback to Kutztown in the all-time series - the first time Bloomsburg has lost Duffy Gilhool 27 at Lock Haven (10/29/16) three straight meetings against its rivals since the 1979-81 seasons. The Huskies mustered only PASSING TOUCHDOWNS 196 yards of total offense which included just 73 yards on the ground - just the seventh time in 63 Erik Benjamin 3 vs Shippensburg (9/22/18) career games under head coach Paul Darragh that Bloomsburg did not reach the century mark in a Duffy Gilhool 1 (three times), last vs Shippensburg (11/5/16) game. Part of the issue was that the Kutztown defense sacked Erik Benjamin five times for a loss of RUSHING YARDS 31 yards. Meanwhile, Kutztown generated 488 yards of total offense against a Huskies’ defense that Qmac Quiteh 168 at East Stroudsburg (10/21/17) came into the game ranked second in the PSAC in total defense through the first four weeks of the Alex Gooden 164 at Millersville (9/30/17) season. Bloomsburg’s only touchdown came with 1:44 left when Benjamin called his own number Hakeem Sillman 142 vs Merrimack (9/1/18) from a yard out, capping off a 16-play, 68-yard drive. It was Benjamin’s fifth rushing touchdown of the Tre Green 72 vs Cheyney (9/23/17) season. Alex Gooden led the Huskies’ rushing attack with 11 carries for 59 yards. Benjamin finished Duffy Gilhool 65 vs East Stroudsburg (10/22/16) 14-of-31 for 123 yards and hooked up with Michael Allen seven times for 66 yards on the night. Kutz- Alexander Arcangeli 54 at Cheyney (9/24/16) town outgained Bloomsburg, 488-196, on the night. The Golden Bears had an edge in both rushing Jack Gaugler 37 at West Chester (10/14/17) (200-73) and passing (288-123) while also holding the ball for more than 31 minutes - the first time Erik Benjamin 16 vs Merrimack (9/1/18) the Huskies did not win the time of possession battle this season. Defensively, Kenny Brown posted Michael Allen 12 vs Shippensburg (9/22/18) a career-high 11 tackles (nine solo) on the night to lead the Huskies. Farrell Stadium. West Chester remains unbeaten on the season, but not before Jarey Duffy Gilhool 14 vs East Stroudsburg (10/22/16) Elder intercepted a pass at midfield with 1:53 to play that squashed Shippensburg’s final comeback Alexander Arcangeli 9 vs Edinboro (9/8/18) bid. The Golden Rams racked up 473 yards of total offense. However, 13 penalties for 118 yards Erik Benjamin 7 vs Edinboro (9/8/18) hampered their efforts all day – taking a pair of touchdowns off the board and another interception by Tre Green 7 at Clarion (9/9/17) Elder, who finished with two in the game. Long was 27-for-36 for 356 yards. He threw TD passes to Jack Gaugler 5 at West Chester (10/14/17) Rosario, Dan Neuhaus, and Rasheem James. Rosario’s Tyler Horst 1 vs Merrimack (9/1/18) 13 catches is the fourth-best single-game effort in school history and the most since Kevin Ingram Jay Popson 1 vs Gannon (9//16/17) caught 14 passes in a game in 1999. 10 2018 Bloomsburg Football Notes (GAME 6 vs west chester) PAUL DARRAGH

6th Season (22nd Season at BU) 43-20 Overall Record Temple ‘85

Paul Darragh was named head coach of Bloomsburg University on December 6, 2013 after being appointed interim head coach in February, 2013. Overall, he will be starting his 22nd season with the Huskies in 2018 and sixth as head coach.

Darragh enters the 2018 campaign with a 41-17 overall record (.707). The 41 victories over his first five seasons marks the most wins in the first five years of a coaching career at Bloomsburg while his .707 winning percentage is the third-best mark during the first five years of a coaching tenure (Robert Redman went 38-4 (.905) from 1947- 51 and Danny Hale went 40-14-1 (.736) from 1993-97). With Darragh on the Huskies’ staff, dating back to his first season as defensive coordinator in 1997, Bloomsburg has compiled an overall record of 182-61 (.749).

The Huskies closed out the 2017 season with a 7-4 record - Bloomsburg’s 19th consecutive winning season dating back to 1999. It is the third-longest streak in PSAC history, behind West Chester’s 31 (1940-42, 1945-72) and Clarion’s 22 (1964-85). The 19 straight seasons with at least six victories, however, continues a PSAC record. Bloomsburg has now posted a winning record in 23 of the last 24 years. Nine Huskies were named All-PSAC East including defensive tackle Jake Klinger, who was an All-Region selection by two different organizations and also a Don Hansen first team All-American.

In 2016, the Huskies saw their streak of 17 consecutive seasons of at least seven victories come to an end but, Bloomsburg did extend its consecutive winning season streak to 18 straight as the team went 6-5 overall and finished in a tie for third place in the State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division with a 4-3 mark.

Six players earned All-PSAC East First or Second Team nods with redshirt sophomore defensive lineman, Chris Gary, also earning Second Team All-American accolades from Don Hansen. Gary finished the season with a PSAC-leading 12.5 sacks - one shy of tying the school record of 13.5 set by Larry Webster in 2012. Bloomsburg’s defense, in particular, was good last season as it finished second in the conference in passing yards allowed per game (193.2) and was fifth in points allowed per contest (23.7).

The 2015 edition saw the Huskies finish fourth in the PSAC in rushing offense (228.7), aided by Lawrence Elliott, Jr., who finished as the league’s leading rusher in yards per game (131.5). Bloomsburg also finished second in the conference in scoring defense (19.7) and second in total defense (320.8). At year’s end, Bloomsburg had nine players named to the All-PSAC East First or Second Teams with Elliott, Jr. also capturing All-Region Second Team honors from the Division II Conference Commissioners’ Association (D2CCA).

The first two seasons of the Darragh Era will go down as two of the strongest in Huskies history. Darragh posted a 21-4 overall record, back-to-back PSAC East titles, two NCAA Playoff berths, and a PSAC Championship (2013) while being named PSAC East Coach of the Year in both 2013 and 2014. He also became the fastest Huskies’ head coach to reach 20 victories. Following the 2014 season, he was honored as the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Super Region One Coach of the Year.

The 2014 squad won its first ten games on the way to an 11-2 record, clinching the PSAC East crown and the second seed in the Super Region One playoff bracket. Bloomsburg reached the regional championship game, after a second round playoff win over Virginia State, to remain as one of the final eight teams in the nation left play- ing. Darragh guided a team that excelled on both sides of the ball - the offense recorded over 220 yards of rushing and nearly 34 points per game. Defensively, Bloomsburg ranked first in the PSAC and sixth in the nation in scoring defense while surrendering just 15.4 points per game. The Huskies also led Division II in turnovers generated, recording a school record 43, and led the country in turnover margin at +30. A PSAC-best 14 players were named All-Conference following the year including senior middle linebacker Justin Shirk who earned PSAC East and Daktronics Super Region One Defensive Player of the Year honors.

During the 2013 season, Darragh led the Huskies to a 10-2 record, a PSAC championship, and a berth in the NCAA Playoffs as part of the best season for any first-year head coach in Bloomsburg history. He was named the PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year. The Huskies took home numerous awards following the season including having four All-Americans and the 2013 Harlon Hill Award winner in running back Franklyn Quiteh. Darragh also coached All-American defensive end Larry Webster, who was selected in the fourth round of the NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions, and offensive lineman Matt Feiler who was signed to the practice squad of the Houston Texans. Feiler is now a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers organization.

Prior to taking over the reins as the head coach, Darragh served as the Huskies’ defensive coordinator for 16 years under legendary head coach, Danny Hale. Under Dar- ragh’s leadership, the Huskies’ defense ranked in the top-half of the PSAC in total defense in seven of his last 11 seasons in the role, including back-to-back second-place finishes in 2000 and 2001 and a second-place ranking in 2009. The Huskies also ranked among the best in the PSAC in run defense, finishing first or second five times.

The 2009 Huskies led the PSAC, and finished third nationally, in scoring defense (13.36/game). Bloomsburg also led the conference in sacks, ranking 14th nationally (3.09 per game). In 2010, the Huskies were eighth in Division II in rushing defense (85.38 yards per game). Under Darragh’s leadership as the defensive coordinator, the Bloomsburg defense finished in the top-15 in NCAA Division II six times from 2000 to 2012.

While serving as the defensive coordinator, Darragh also coached 57 First Team All-PSAC performers, ten All-Americans, and three PSAC East Defensive Players of the Year in Justin Shirk (2014), Anthony Smith (2009) and Mike Varanavage (2010).

Prior to Bloomsburg, Darragh worked for two years at Indiana (PA) as the linebackers coach. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Temple from 1987- 89. From there, Darragh coached the linebackers at Northeastern and Gannon before being promoted to defensive coordinator at Gannon.
