Observance of World Health Day 2017 Ageing Nepal , April 8, 2017 Ageing Nepal organized a week long elderly focused campaign activities in partnership with HelpAge International to mark the World Health Day 2017 with the main theme of Depression: Let’s Talk. Following campaign activities were conducted to pressurize government and to generate mass awareness.

Inauguration of Basic Literacy Class for Older Persons Ageing Nepal Kathmandu, April 22, 2017 Ageing Nepal in collaboration with Karna Jayanti Foundation - a local NGO, inaugurated “Basic Literacy Class for Older Persons” in Kapan, Kathmandu on 22nd April, 2017. The inauguration ceremony was organized in the premises of Yagyamati Secondary School. Twenty five 60+ neo-learners will attend the class regularly for 8 months, except on public holidays. The programme aims to empower neo-learners with basic skills of reading, writing and numerical. This programme is supported by Ageing Nepal Switzerland.

SOCIAL SECURITY Elderly in Banking System Annapurna Post Daily Palpa, April 2, 2017 Senior citizens of Tansen, Palpa district are economically empowered after government decided to distribute old age allowance (OAA) through bank cheque. This recently introduced government policy encouraged them to open bank account for their financial security. One of many, Mr. Jit Bahadur Ale, 80, started saving money that he gained from others sources too.

Elderly Deprived of OAA Kantipur Daily/Gorkhapatra Makwanpur, April 2, 18 and 25, 2017 Elderly of Makwanpur and Kalikot district are deprived of old age allowance (OAA) due to on-going restructuring of local level government administration system. “Elderly regularly come to ask for the OAA but delay in account update hindering us to distribute,” said Mr. Manoj Lamichanne, Ward Secretary of Makwanpur district.

Similarly, the news published in Kantipur Daily on April 25, 2017 revealed senior citizens of Taplejung district have also been deprived of OAA for last 6 months.

Elderly Entirely Dependent on OAA Nagarik Daily Saptari, April 11, 2017 Domandevi, 90, of Saptari district is living by begging since 5 months after the government stopped distributing old age allowance (OAA) in the district. “OAA was my only income source but now I am compelled to beg” she lamented. She is only an example of about 50 thousands Social Security Allowance (SSA) beneficiaries of the district. Mr. Harihar Chaudhari, district Chief of SSA department said, “Due to the political strike, we are confronting with so many problems to distribute SSA.”

Manifesto for Increment of OAA Annapurna Daily Kathmandu, April 24, 2017 Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) unveiled manifesto for the upcoming local election. The manifesto has prioritized youth focused development project and others policies including increment of old age allowance to Rs. 5000. Now, government is distributing OAA RS. 2000 monthly to 70+ older people.

ACTIVE AGEING Earning Elderly Annapurna Daily Lalitpur, April 3, 2017 Dal Bahadur Timalsina, 62, of Lalitpur district is earning Rs. 200,000 yearly by planting Himalayan Yew trees. Illiterate Mr. Timalsina started his business by planting 200 saplings. Now, he has 40,000 trees and aims to plant 100,000 within a year.

Laborious Elderly Kantipur Daily Gorkha, April 7, 2017 Septuagenarian Maila Gurung, a visually impaired elderly of Gorkha district earns his living by breaking stones. “Massive earthquake of April 2015 increased demand of sand for building house in village which led me to take up this occupation. Now, I can easily afford to have two square meals daily” he said.

Nonagenarian Teacher Annapurna Daily Kaski, April 18, 2017 Agnihotri Kedarnath Upadhyaya, 95, of Pokhara, Kaski district proved that there is no age bar for living active and healthy life. He gets up at 4 a.m. and visits nearby school to teach Veda – a Hindu scripture. He has been following this routine for

more than 74 years. Founder of the school, Mr. Upadhayaya teaches 60 students for 7 hours a day regularly.

Sexagenarian Building Contractor Annapurna Daily Dolkha, April, 2017 Balkumari Kafle, 63, of Dolkha district succeeded to be known as the only woman building-contractor of the district. She started working as a labour before 30 years. Now, she is well known woman contractor of the district. She shared that early marriage and poverty pushed her in this field.

DEVELOPMENT Free Bus Service for Elderly Gorkhapatra Daily, Kaski, April 13, 2017 Lekhnath, sub-metropolitan of Kaski district has decided to provide free bus service for older people above 70 years and people with disability. Mr. Dirgha Narayan Poudel, Secretary of the Metropolitan said, “We are trying to collaborate with travel agency to initiate this programme soon.”

Generous Elderly Couple Annapurna Daily Kathmandu, April 18, 2017 An elderly couple, Chine Bahadur Shrestha, 89, and his wife Shantidevi Shrestha supported 40 million for addition of 2 stories to Bhaktapur Cancer hospital building. Mr. Shrestha handed over the key of the floors to Hon’ble Health Minister, Mr. Gagan Thapa at a programme organized to mark the building inauguration.

Pashupati OAH at New Location Gorkhapatra Daily Kathmandu, April 22, 2017 Cultural Ministry is planning to transfer old and earthquake damaged Pashupati old age home (OAH) to Gothatar in Bhaktapur District. The Ministry revealed that map has been prepared and legally approved for construction of the new structure in the land provided by Pashupati Area Development Trust. The Pashupati OAH is the only OAH run by the government of Nepal.

Health Service Center for Elderly Kantipur Daily Kathmandu, April 28, 2017 Art of Living, a multi-faceted organization inaugurated health service center for senior citizens in Kathmandu. Ms. Rita Shrestha Vaidya, one of the followers of Art of Living, contributed more than 20 million for building construction in the memory of her late mother and brother.

EMERGENCY Helpless Nonagenarian Annapurna Post Daily Saptari, April 27, 2017 Surya Narayan Mandal, 90, of Saptari district is compelled to live behind bar even though he has already completed jail sentence for him. “I have a wish to live my rest of life with my family but I couldn’t afford bail,” he lamented with tearful eyes. He was arrested in forgery case and sentenced for 2 years with a fine of RS. 366,187 bail.
