13.035 Gift Giving Guide 2014.indd 1 2/13/2014 10:38:12 AM Jesus must be the subject around whom the of God comes together, for it is through him that we come to knowledge of God and his purpose for this church. Knowing who we are and owning that with one voice, with one mind, and with one spirit, is the essence of unity. God has called us to seek the lost, change the world, and unmistakably be salt and light; I believe he has called us to expand the kingdom, here, now.

The church is a masterpiece. Who we are as a people, how we are adopted by the hand and providence of God for his purposes, his destiny, his providential will— that is what empowers us to change the world. Together, we can become a body that is a true masterpiece of God, the authentic representation of the presence of the living Jesus.

To move forward, the unity of our own church family must be cemented. There are factions, subsets, splinters, and tribes within the Movement, all held loosely together but sometimes moving in different directions. All of us need to embrace the truth that Jesus is the subject. The church is not the subject. When we are in right relationship to Jesus, the church will be fine. If we are not in right relation- ship to Jesus, no program, doctrine, distinctive, or emphasis in the church will be healthy. Who Jesus is. What Jesus thinks. What Jesus cares about. What Jesus died for. What Jesus calls to do. How Jesus loves. How Jesus forgives. How Jesus walked and would have us walk. This is the stuff of unity. Focusing along these lines is our hope to realize our Heaven-sent destiny as a Movement.

The Church of God is hinged on relationships and grounded in the Word. We must nurture relationships with each other, tethered by this truth: Jesus is the subject. Supremely. When we obey him, we love him. When we see him, we see the Father. When we follow him, we find life.

Let’s proclaim him and be the vey hands, feet, touch, and breath of Jesus

There in your city, from the ministry base of your congregation, you affect lives for eternity. The mission model found in Acts 1:8 challenges us to use creative ideas and opportunities for servanthood to be the body of Christ with- in our own communities, just beyond the horizon of our own cultures, and toward peoples and lands far from us but reachable with love planted in our spirits by Jesus. “You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” —Acts 1:8 niv

The opportunities and the resources found in this 2014 Gift-Giving Guide repre- sent the donor-restricted funding items of the General Assembly’s World Ministry Budget. Our partnership together, as stewards of the kingdom’s resources, stands solidly upon a stewardship philosophy of abundance thinking and creative sup- port opportunities.

We hope that you sense our intention of connecting your church’s passion with the priorities illustrated by Jesus’ commandment and commission. This ministry part- nership is all based on the Lord’s vision of culture being transformed by us—the body of Christ.

The Living Link program is the heart of the Global Missions ministry partnership with the church. This partnership enables Church of God missionaries to go into the world to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ.

The Project Link program enables donor congregations and individuals to make a vital connection with important missional projects that are directly connected with felt needs around the globe. Project Link continues to develop opportunities for relational connections through mission project endeavors. Project Link is a self-supporting pro- gram with all the essential support services included. Project fund goals include a support fee of 8 percent for all projects except for approved educational institutions and approved capital projects, which carry a 4 percent support fee. These excepted projects are marked with an asterisks (*) throughout the Gift-Giving Guide.

Educational institutions are theological schools that serve a region or have a project budget of more than $10,000 annually. Capital projects are new building projects with project budgets of $50,000 or more that have a beginning and ending timeline date.

These projects are evaluated annually by our regional coordinators using an assessment grid based on the RAISE principle (relationship, accountability, indigenous, sustainability, and equity).

The goal of Global Missions is to have every Church of God congregation in the United States and Canada linked together in a commitment of support for our strategic missions outreach program.

Contribution Reminder: Contributions to Church of God Ministries are under CGM’s full discretion and control as required by IRS regulations. Funds distributed, as allowed by the IRS, will be used in compliance with donor intent. 6 www.chog.org

Each week Christians Broadcasting Hope (CBH) produces radio programs in nine languages that air around the world. ViewPoint, in English with Jim Lyon, and Kello Tamam, our Arabic broadcast hosted by Nabil and Myrna Safi, are produced in Anderson, Indiana. La Hermandad Cristiana, in Spanish with Gilbert Davila, is produced in Texas and California. Seven other broadcasts are created indigenously around the world by local teams in specific regions. Often our broadcasts open the door for listeners to ask about the Lord and to be encouraged. Real messages encouraging real lives.

“My father passed away on Friday. I was devastated and laying in bed on Sunday, when ViewPoint came on the radio. I had never heard it before, but it was exactly what I needed to hear. I was able to get out of bed and I was praising God all day! Hope was brought back into my life that day and I am so grateful.” —Leslie, Salem OR

“I am blind and don’t get out of my home much. Sadly, most of the company I get are the four walls of my living room. After I heard ViewPoint, the walls of my house seemed to expand and grow with love and hope. Now, I listen every week. It has changed my life, my world, and allowed my soul to see what my eyes cannot. Thank you so much. God bless you.” —Elizebeth, ViewPoint listener

Be encouraged. You are making a lasting difference.

ECFA’s Seven Standards of Responsible Stewardship Standard 1—Doctrinal Issues. Every organization shall subscribe to a written statement of faith clearly affirming a commitment to the evangelical Christian faith or shall otherwise demonstrate such commitment and shall operate in ac- cordance with biblical truths and practices.

Standard 2—Governance. Every organization shall be governed by a respon- A higher standard. sible board of not less than five individuals, a majority of whom shall be inde- A higher purpose. pendent, who shall meet at least semiannually to establish policy and review its accomplishments.

Standard 3—Financial Oversight. Each organization shall prepare complete and accurate financial statements. The board or a committee consisting of a -ma jority of independent members shall approve the engagement of an independent certified public accountant, review the annual financial statements and maintain appropriate communication with the independent certified public accountant. The board shall be apprised of any material weaknesses in internal control or other significant risks.

Standard 4—Use of Resources and Compliance with Laws. Every organiza- tion shall exercise the appropriate management and controls necessary to provide reasonable assurance that all of the organization’s operations are carried out and resources are used in a responsible manner and in conformity with applicable laws and regulations, such conformity taking into account biblical mandates.

Standard 5—Transparency. Every organization shall provide a copy of its cur- rent financial statements upon written request and shall provide other disclo- sures as the law may require. The financial statements required to comply with Standard 3 must be disclosed under this standard. An organization must provide a report, upon written request, including financial information on any specific project for which it has sought or is seeking gifts.

Standard 6—Related-party Transactions. Every organization shall avoid con- flicts of interest. Transactions with related parties may be undertaken only if all of the following are observed: 1) a material transaction is fully disclosed in the financial statements of the organization; 2) the related party is excluded from the discussion and approval of such transaction; 3) a competitive bid or comparable valuation exists; and 4) the organization’s board has acted upon and demon- strated that the transaction is in the best interest of the organization. Standard 7—Stewardship of Charitable Gifts.

7.1 Truthfulness in Communications. In securing charitable gifts, all represen- tations of fact, descriptions of the financial condition of the organization, or nar- ratives about events must be current, complete, and accurate. References to past activities or events must be appropriately dated. There must be no material omis- sions or exaggerations of fact, use of misleading photographs or any other com- munication which would tend to create a false impression or misunderstanding.
