Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Welcome to ASSEMBLY 2020, the sixth annual gathering of the faithful in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Thank you for coming together with me once again to continue our journey of transformation and pastoral renewal. Although this year has brought challenges for many across the Archdiocese, we know that all things work for good for those who love God.1 We celebrate our blessings and approach God’s throne of grace with confidence2 because our hope in the Lord sustains us!3 Today we celebrate together that the Church is one in spirit and truth4, especially through the liturgy of the Eucharist. We are strengthened by the Holy Spirit who has empowered us to be Christ’s witnesses to the end of the earth.5 Pray that we will go forth renewed by the theme of our gathering, “Sent by the Spirit: Building a Catholic Culture of Discipleship.” This year, we have invited distinguished speakers to share their personal experiences as missionary disciples and offer insightful, practical strategies to build a Catholic culture of discipleship in our families and faith communities. May we instill their messages of hope in our daily life that our sight may be restored6 to see the Lord’s goodness7 and that we may proclaim the kingdom of God with complete assurance.8 As we go forth from Assembly, our work as missionary disciples is just beginning. May our efforts to build a Catholic culture of discipleship be led by the parable of the good Samaritan. As Pope Francis states, “Jesus trusts in the best of the human spirit; with this parable, he encourages us to persevere in love, to restore dignity to the suffering and to build a society worthy of the name.”9 May we be challenged by the invitation of Pope Francis to continue working to build a culture of discipleship as missionaries in all corners of the Archdiocese.

In Christ’s Love,

+ Most Rev. Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS Archbishop of San Antonio

2 | Archdiocese of San Antonio Assembly 2020 A Brief History

The Journey Towards the Assembly Assembly celebrates our unity as Catholics in the local Church. Each year, we unite as clergy, consecrated women and men, and lay people from across the Archdiocese—invited by Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS—to journey as missionary disciples of Jesus Christ. Early Beginnings The beginnings of Assembly trace back to the Pentecost Vigil Mass in 2013 at San Fernando Cathedral when Archbishop Gustavo proclaimed the Archdiocesan Mutually Shared Vision. He outlined the new Pastoral Priorities of New Evangelization, Catechesis & Faith Formation, and Youth & Young Adults and he announced our Pastoral Values of Prayerfulness, Stewardship, and Unity.

In 2014, to further support efforts toward our Mutually Shared Vision, the Archdiocese was consecrated to the Holy Spirit at the Pentecost Vigil Mass. Teams of people in various ministries across the Archdiocese have worked within their parishes to advance these priorities and demonstrate these values since their proclamation. The Assembly The Assembly was created as an embodiment of our Archdiocesan Mutually Shared Vision. The gathering is an outward expression of our unity as a local Church, offering an opportunity to celebrate our shared achievements together. Each Assembly is part of a thematic three-year cycle. In 2015, the first Archdiocesan Assembly started our journey on the road to Missionary Discipleship and gave us a route to follow: Encountering Christ (2015), United as Church (2016), and Sent by the Spirit (2017). We were reminded of our Baptismal call to preach the Gospel to all.i Building a Catholic Culture of Discipleship In 2018, five years after the Archbishop proclaimed the Mutually Shared Vision, the Archdiocese renewed its commitment to the Pastoral Priorities at the Pentecost Vigil Mass to embrace a culture of Encounter. The 2018 theme was Building a Catholic Culture of Encounter. In 2019, on the fifth anniversary of the consecration to the Holy Spirit, the Archdiocese was re-consecrated to the Holy Spirit at the Pentecost Vigil Mass. Our theme for Assembly then was Building a Catholic Culture of Accompaniment.

This year, we culminate the second three-year cycle with Assembly 2020: Building a Catholic Culture of Discipleship. We are strengthened by the grace that is Christ Jesusii to encounter and accompany others as missionary disciples. We celebrate that our Pastoral Priorities as expressed in the proclamation continue to be advanced in parishes, schools, and communities. Even in the midst of new challenges brought in 2020, our pastoral values of Prayerfulness, Stewardship, and Unity continue to be demonstrated across the Archdiocese today.

See with compassion the suffering of your beloved sons and daughters affected by the Coronavirus Pandemic throughout the entire world.

Ask your Son to have mercy on us bringing healing to those infected, strength to those in recovery and protection to all your children.

Jesus Christ, Savior of all people, grant us courage to accompany and care for the entire world in the wake of sorrow and uncertainty.

We seek refuge in you, and according to your promise, deliver us from this danger. Amen

In the business of crisis response, we understand that hospitality goes beyond offering a one-time meal to a family or providing clothing to someone in need. Radical hospitality requires giving someone the warmth of a home with a smile and open arms. It is recognizing the mark of the soul and undeniable dignity that each person has and it requires a bold and brave response from each of us. Radical hospitality is a duty and an act of mercy. Radical hospitality has the power to transform hearts and change lives. If we are truly called to see Christ is the faces of those around us, then let us understand that serving others is our responsibility and our privilege.
