GREEN, MAX: Files, 1985-1988 – REAGAN LIBRARY COLLECTIONS GREEN, MAX: Files, 1985-1988 – REAGAN LIBRARY COLLECTIONS This collection is available in whole for research use. Some folders may still have withdrawn material due to Freedom of Information Act restrictions. Most frequently withdrawn material is national security classified material, personal privacy, protection of the President, etc. GREEN, MAX: Files, 1985-1988 Office of Public Liaison Scope Note Max Green was appointed as the Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison (OPL) for Jewish affairs and outreach in 1985. He succeeded Marshall Breger as liaison to this constituency. While at the White House he added responsibility for several other constituencies from OPL Deputy Director Linas Kojelis after a reorganization of the OPL office. Because of this reassignment and the collections large amount of material carried over from previous Jewish liaisons, Marshall Breger and Michael Gale, the Library has created multiple subject series to separate the materials with heavy influence or work product from other individuals. In addition you will find work product of Mr. Green's staff assistant, Matt Zachari, especially in 1987 folders and material. Zachari also has a small collection of his own. Max Green left the White House in June 1988. Jewish liaison duties were handled by Matt Zachari as interim liaison to the Jewish community. The President appointed a new Associate Director for Public Liaison with the Jewish community, Benjamin Waldman, in September 1988. The Max Green collection consists of six series: SERIES I: Kojelis-Green Subject File; SERIES II: Green Subject File; SERIES III: Breger-Green Subject File; SERIES IV: Events; SERIES V: Correspondence; and SERIES VI: Telephone Logs. IMMIGRATION Immigrant Policy Project Report on State Immigration Laws, 2020 FEBRUARY | 2021 Report on State Immigration Laws, 2020 BY ANN MORSE The National Conference of State Legislatures is the bipartisan organization dedicated to serving the lawmakers and staffs of the nation’s 50 states, its commonwealths and territories. NCSL provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues, and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system. Its objectives are: • Improve the quality and effectiveness of state legislatures. • Promote policy innovation and communication among state legislatures. • Ensure state legislatures a strong, cohesive voice in the federal system. The conference operates from offices in Denver, Colorado and Washington, D.C. NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF STATE LEGISLATURES © 2020 iii NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF STATE LEGISLATURES Many state legislatures took a break from the topic of immigration in 2020 as the pandemic and econom- ic crises created new priorities for legislative action. Exclusion of immigrant families and children from fed- eral COVID-19 and economic stimulus laws, however, led several states to respond with new state funding and community outreach. Examples include health care for immigrant seniors, tenant protections and extension of eligibility for pub- lic benefit during the pandemic. States also continued working on professional licenses for immigrants, re- gardless of immigration status. Virginia, with new Democratic majorities, became the latest state to enact driving privilege cards and in-state tuition rates for unauthorized immigrants and the creation of an Office for New Americans. What’s the Outlook? The Biden administration released a four-page summary of the U.S.

  • United States: National Affairs, Anti-Semitism
United States National Affairs TheBush administration began the year buoyed by the results of the November 2004 elections: the president's decisive reelection and a strong Republican showing in the congressional races in which the party, already in control of both houses, gained four seats in the Senate and three in the House. The president promised to spend the "political capi- tal" he had earned on an agenda that included Social Security reform, tax cuts, and the continuation of an aggressive global war on terror. The organized Jewish community, meanwhile, geared up for another four years of an administration strongly allied with most Jews on Israel's defense needs, defiantly committed to an increasingly complicated and controversial war in Iraq, and diverging sharply from the majority of American Jews on many domestic issues. THE POLITICAL ARENA olected President Ldent Bush won immediate praise from Jewish leaders for his intment of Judge Michael Chertoff, the son of a rabbi, as secretary meland security. Chertoff had been a widely respected prosecutor hen chief of the Justice Department's criminal division before be- a judge on the Third Circuit of the U.S. Court ofAppeals. He jominated for his new post on January 11 and confirmed by the e on February 15. Another appointment of a prominent Jew was )f Elliott Abrams, who had held a variety of government positions, deputy assistant to the president and deputy national security )ther presidential appointments were generally applauded by the ommunity. Condoleezza Rice, seen as a friend of Israel, moved ional security advisor to secretary of state.

Influenced by the writings of the educator Booker T. Washington, this Jewish philanthropist joined forces with African American communities during the Jim Crow South to build over 5,300 schools during the early part of the 20th century. Inspired by the Jewish ideals of tzedakah (charity) and tikkun olam (repairing the world), and a deep concern over racial inequality in America, Julius Rosenwald used his wealth to become one of America’s most effective philanthropists. Because of his modesty, Rosenwald’s philanthropy and social activism are not well known today. He gave away $62million in his lifetime.
