For some exasperating reason, drivers frequently overtake a cyclist and immediately make a right turn with no consideration for the fate of the rider. When this happens it’s time for hard braking and a loud shout. Mastering the Challenges of City Riding When it happens before the rear fender has passed you, you’ve got no choice but to turn with it. BY MICHAEL ADAMS

Mike Adams is a member of the New Orleans Track Club Walkers. He has been walking for the past 12 months, both for health and pleasure. He takes part in most of the NOTC races, including the Elmwood Classic. The day of the Elmwood Classic dawned with light clouds. It was warm with a slight breeze. The journey from New Orleans East was easy. No traffic on the High Rise. There never is at 7:00 a.m. in a Sunday morning. Parking at the Elmwood Shopping Center was easy, well ahead of the 1,000 or more competitors who would be arriving for the 9:00 a.m. start. The Race Director, Chuck George and his large crew of 75 or more volunteers, have already been hard at work since 6:30 a.m. setting up the start and finish lines. They have also been making ready the registration booths for collection of fees and issuing race numbers. I'm out on the course checking on the route and conditions underfoot. Gradually the numbers swell, the one mile race starts at 8:30 a.m. This is a chance for the younger competitors to try their abilities. More people arrive, old friends greet one another, speculating on the weather. Will it hold, or will the sun be out, making the going unbearably hot? 9:00 a.m. - The race is on, the runners for the 5 and 10K start together, the walkers start 2 minutes behind, giving them a clear start. The pace is fast, the weather is still good, clouds keeping the course cooler. The faster walkers have caught up with the slower runners and there are the usual comments. "That's the end, being passed by a walker". Halfway and the water station in sight; what a relief for the throat is dry', dehydration can happen quickly, especially if the weather is hot. There is some commotion behind, its the NOTC van heralding the leader of the 10K race. The lead runners had completed 10K before the walkers near the end of 5K. That’s the way is goes. Here comes the 5K finish, 31 min. 19 sec., a win and a personal record for Mike Adams. Shirley McCullum was the first lady walker in 32 min. 42 sec., also a personal record. Ed Whiteman finished the 10K in 55 min. 43 sec., a personal record for him, and Nan Cohen was the first lady walker with a time of 72 min. 25 sec. Gradually all the runners and walkers complete. It was estimated that there would be some 1,400 starters, but actually, there were nearly 1,900 starters, of which some 500 were registered walkers. So another NOTC race is brought to a successful conclusion, not without some dissention in the walking division however. It is hard for people to realize that something we do every day, without thinking, is bound by rules. As far back at the 16th century, records shows that walking races took place. In the 1700's and 1800's, walking races were held on a regular basis in Europe. In 1908, walking became an Olympic sport and has continued to the present day, except for the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam. What are these rules? This is the International Amateur Athletic Federation's definition of race walking: "Walking is progression by steps so taken that unbroken contact with the ground is maintained. At each step, the advancing foot of the walker must make contact with the ground before th rear foot leaves the ground. During the period of each step, when a foot is on the ground, the leg must be straightened (i..e., not bent at the knee) at least for one moment, and in particular, the supporting leg must be straight in the vertical upright position." These two rules, straight supporting leg and constant contact with the ground, prevent a running action and ensure that all walkers compete equally. Due to ignorance of these rules, some competitors part ran, part walk, and because in their estimation more time was spent walking than running have tmt in their race tag as a walker. With some rather surprising results. It is up to all walkers to realize that if you do walk, then walk all the time; be it power walking, aerobic walking, heavy hands, race walking, or just plain walk walking. Runners cannot claim walking status if, at any time in a race, they run. In the future, it is hoped to distinguish walkers in some way, and have judges on the course to disqualify a walker who is running. Michael Adams
