October North 1 West Warrington 23 - 45 Wilmslow Wilmslow 22 - 31 Widnes It was close to a full strength Wolves side that travelled to Warrington’s picturesque Walton Lea ground. With regular picks . It was a much depleted Wilmslow side, missing the reassuring presence of Bob MacCallum, Mike Clifford and a host of like James Keys, Ollie Wilkinson and Jack Walmsley all starting on the bench, it was clear that Richard Jones had been dealt others, that took the field against the fleet footed and street wise operators from Widnes and they were made to pay dearly for a much better hand than the one he had the week before from which to select his side. two yellow cards issued against them either side of half time. Three of the four Widnes tries came whilst the Wolves were reduced to fourteen on the field. From one to fifteen, there was a desire and purpose about the Wolves. Rugby starts with the front row providing the platform on which everyone else can play. In recent weeks, there’s been a huge improvement in this department. Here Ms. Ayrey, The cognoscenti on the touchline were fearing the worst against a top four side but for half an hour the unfancied Wolves Whitely and Taylor were the masters and when the big lump that is Walmsley came on as a second half substitute he put were in the box seat. They created a thoroughly good try after fifteen minutes and capitalised with a second after thirty himself about in a manner rarely seen before. In the second row, it was as if it had taken the equally solid citizen, Simon minutes when Widnes dropped the ball in midfield. At this stage all was fine but the first yellow card changed all that and as Irving, partnering Mike Clifford, six weeks to throw off the excesses of summer and to produce his most effective battle the game progressed lapses in the Wolves concentration and execution all contributed to their downfall. They found it difficult hardened performance of the current campaign. The back row too is growing into a formidable unit and when skipper Mike to adequately clear their lines, in the main just hoofing the ball back to the influential Widnes runners and then failing to find Black had to depart the fray after thirty minutes with a clout to the side of the head, it was only to replace him with the doughty touch with critical penalty kicks. Quite simply, they were not sufficiently clinical in what they were trying to do and Widnes and abrasive Keys. Half backs Rory Bell and Bob MacCallum will always keep opposition defences busy, Jack Harrison runners such as the wily Matty Smith, Kevin Leadbetter, Paul O’Connor and David Welsh all seem to know where a kicker looked a natural No. 13, breathing new life into the old campaigner Rick Hughes, and the back three of Max Harvey, Ian intends to put the ball and will position themselves to take full advantage if there’s any error of judgement. Twice in the Culligan and Nick Barker all showed that they too could play a bit. On this showing some of the hitherto automatic first second half Wilmslow’s No. 10 Jack Harrison had penalties to set up promising attacking positions for the Wolves. There choices still unavailable cannot be certain that they will regain their places without a struggle. wasn’t much wrong with either of his strikes, both on target for the spot he was aiming for, maybe slightly undercooked, but Widnes’ full back Matty Smith plucked both out of the sky, having taken up the position that he reckoned Harrison would be The leafy autumnal colours on a beautifully mild autumn afternoon made for a fine amphitheatre in which to watch rugby, aiming for. They started one place above the Wolves in the table and on their own turf and Harrison, recently a county U21 fly half, was looking assured at No. 10. It was his little loop and shimmy after fifteen were most people’s favourites to win this one. The Wolves though had no such inhibitions. minutes involving left winger Harry Patch, which created the space for centre Richard Hughes to score. Goal kicking duties had been passed to Conor McMurdoch and he let know one down with the conversion and subsequent penalty ten minutes MacCallum’s opening kick to start the game rolled innocuously into touch and from the lineout Warrington stand off Andy later. Roberts thumped the ball firmly into the Wolves twenty two. They messed up the Wolves lineout throw and initiated a series of thrusts towards the Wolves line. The tenacious Wolf pack somehow engineered a turnover which became a penalty which Leadbetter, who is proficient at just about any position in the Widnes back division, was soon on the scoreboard with a penalty MacCallum put into touch on half way. The Wolves were now able to mount their first attacks, giving the ball width, moving it of his own but just five minutes later, the ball went loose on halfway for Harrison to gather but he wasn’t quite fast enough to right and left, forwards joining the line, always probing and crucially retaining possession. It wasn’t long before they had a run the whole way. He had the support though and when the ball reappeared from the ruck, Hughes was in for his second scrum on the Warrington line. No. 8 Alex Taylor was held up going for the opening score, so was Black but the heavy score. brigade, in the form of Irving, was not to be denied. MacCallum showed that he had brought his kicking boots with him by imperiously converting from close to touch. Hughes was then yellow carded by referee Snoddy for an offence at the breakdown and the floodgates just opened. Records show that more often than not that the shorthanded side will concede one score during the ten minutes that a player is in the From the restart the Wolves were on their way again but a loose inside pass from the wing was swept up by the home side bin but three is normally unheard of. who put the ball deep into Wolves territory. Sandwiched in between, Widnes centre Welsh had broken free down the touchline and only a fine covering tackle by Bell had prevented a score. Throughout the game Alex Taylor was rock solid at the restart and he set the Wolves on their way again. Culligan was forced Immediately after the interval, Widnes showed they were better at aerial out but the Wolves stole the Warrington lineout. Black had a cut towards the line, the ball was recycled for MacCallum to ping pong with the ball when they found touch in the Wilmslow twenty two. indulge in a bit of midfield sorcery and suddenly there was the giraffe like Clifford loping away for try No. 3 and only twenty Wilmslow still had the throw at the lineout and should have cleared but they minutes had been played. didn’t and from the subsequent scrum, Widnes put in several phases of good play, stretching the defence right and left, until flanker Mike Jones The flow was interrupted when the Wolves got turned over in a ruck and the home side were able to mount a series of attacks, broke off the side of a maul to score. Leadbetter converted all three tries which concluded with a try on the left wing from Zac Lythgoe, converted by Wood. When they could get their hands on the and Widnes were now 24-15 to the good. ball, they were a threat, being masters of retaining possession but they couldn’t at this stage get enough of it from the set pieces. The Wolves then squandered a good opportunity when they were penalised at the scrum, the errors started creeping in and Hewitt earned Wilmslow’s As half time approached MacCallum kicked a penalty and this was followed by a sustained attack, which saw the Warrington second Yellow Card. Widnes were enjoying a surfeit of good possession defence in all sorts of trouble. Irving took a miscued clearing kick and from the ruck Bell was over for try No. 4. A fifth looked from ball kicked away by the Wolves and from one of these they scorched on the cards when the Wolves had a scrum on the home side twenty two but when the move broke down, referee Sheard away from midfield for Welsh to get their fourth try, again converted by signalled for half time. Whatever the Warrington coaches said at half time, it had the effect of getting their side to play to its strengths in the second Referee Snoddy had been hard on the Wolves up to this point but as the game entered its final minutes, he started to even half. They abandoned the lineout, kept the ball in hand and played route one pick and drive rugby. It was a much more things up a bit by Yellow Carding Widnes hooker Mark Brick and centre David Welsh in quick succession. There was still ten minutes to play though when Bell was yellow carded for a piece of obstruction but a loose ball was seized upon by Culligan in his twenty two and he managed to It was so frustrating and disappointing, said Wolves coach Rick Jones afterwards. Saturday 11th. October Eccles 13 - 38 Kirkby Lonsdale KL were first out of the blocks when after ten minutes a burst from centre Jack Akrigg gave them an early lead. Ryan Terry converted and slotted a penalty ten minutes later. Eccles landed a penalty themselves but, even though Akrigg was strangely yellow carded, KL remained in charge and added a further penalty and try from stand off Dave Barton, following a Ben Walker break.

Eccles started the second half with a try in the corner when KL missed a tackle but KL skipper Matt Hughes then scored and this was followed by a bonus point fourth try from Barton, cutting the home defence to pieces. KL continued to dominate and full back Terry added their fifth try. A consolation for Eccles followed but Terry had the last word with a second penalty.

Saturday 18th. October Kirkby Lonsdale 13—6 Birkenhead Park Two good sides produced an exciting game with the power and efficiency of the visitor’s direct play pitted Andy Vassell wishes the Wolves and all Wilmslow against the flair of Ben Walker and Dave Barton, the two best half backs in the league, reports KL’s correspondent. RUFC teams a successful 2014/15 season.

KL were 8-0 up after the first quarter thanks to a Ryan Terry penalty and the game’s first try from hooker Dan Armistead. Park then got into the game but despite all their power and pressure could only manage a penalty in the face of a defiant KL defence. Further penalty chances for Park went missing in the second half until Walker and Barton combined to produce an exciting break almost the full length of the pitch which ended with winger Dave Bird scoring in the corner.

Park still had time to rescue the game but another penalty went adrift. They Proud to sponsor Adam Taher did get one with fifteen minutes left but the Kirkby defence refused to yield against Park’s direct inside ball passing game. Seven minutes of extra time were played before Walker was in the front row. able to bang the ball into touch for a hard won bruising victory.

The longer the game went on, the more Wigton got on top and they will be relieved to at last have got some real league points.

Saturday 11th. October Birkenhead Park 31-24 Warrington It was the proverbial game of two halves with Park storming to a 31- 10 half time lead but failing to register a single point after the break. Enough though to maintain their second place spot in the league. Warrington struck first after only two minutes with a spectacular try by winger Lewis converted by Wood but Park’s forwards were soon dominating. Hooker Rob Doolan was the first to cross for Park after 10 minutes, flanker Lawrence Thomas got the second, No. 8 Dave Ibbotson the third and centre Danny Rich the fourth. Dave Hall 108 CHAPEL LANE converted all four and added a penalty for good measure. Wood got a penalty for Warrington and raised their game in the second half for tries from Pilkington and Lewis but that was as close as they were to get. Tuesday to Friday 9.00am to 6.00pm. There was a home debut for winger Jamie Goligher, another player to have come through Park’s junior section.

Saturday Carlisle 26 - 24 Kendal 8.00am to 3.30pm. Another match with an unexpected outcome. Carlisle are proving to be another of those sides whose results are hard to call. Losing at home to Penrith and then by 26 points at Bolton, you could have been forgiven for Closed Mondays thinking their bubble had burst but not at all. Having lost their key man of recent seasons, fly half Glenn Weightman, to Kendal this season, I’ll bet there was a lot of sniggering in the Carlisle clubhouse after this one. No Appointment Needed Carlisle led 14 - 10 at half time but two Kendal tries had them 24 - 14 in front as the game entered its final minutes. With five minutes to go Yusuf Sahib found a way round his man for a try that Matthew Minett converted and then with just two minutes left centre Dan Holmes broke free from a tackle for the final score. Follow us on Weightman hung a high restart kick for his forwards to get under but Carlisle’s Halliday secured it and after Twitter.com/stigshop and several phases, they put it out of play.

Facebook.com/stigshops It was Carlisle’s first win in thirty years over Kendal and I should think all the sweeter for that.

October I was looking back through the records to fifty years ago. K.L. were not on the fixture list and I think the Saturday

furthest north up the west coast we went was Kendal. On this date then, we played Wakefield (no longer 18th. October in existence) in a run of no fewer than six away games, including and Sheffield;

winning them all. This run came to an end with a home defeat to Manchester University (how times

have changed), who seemed to have had a rugby playing recruitment policy, with fine players of the calibre of Bev Risman, Ken Nelson and Barry O’ Driscoll on the side.
