Cassie Sumfest and Meredith Sholder, both with previous starting experience, are back on the turf as redshirt juniors and they returned with a bang, each scoring in UNC’s 3-1 win over the host Demon Deacons. Sumfest, a defender/midfielder, suffered a torn ACL in the spring of 2019 and was sidelined for the year. During her first two years, she started 42 of 44 games in which she appeared as a key part of the Tar Heel defense. Sholder, a forward, broke a bone in her foot during the 2019 preseason and missed the fall. She started eight games as a freshman and came off the bench to play in all 23 games as a sophomore in 2018, with nine goals and 10 assists over her first two seasons.

New to the Tar Heel roster Sophomore forward Paityn Wirth was an offseason addition to the Tar Heel lineup. She spent last season at Penn State, starting all 20 games for the Nittany Lions as a true freshman. She totaled five goals and a team-best five assists and was named to the All-Mideast Region second team. Wirth transferred to UNC over the summer and played in all eight games, starting seven. “She’s going to contribute immediately and we’re delighted that she’s here,” UNC coach Karen Shelton said during the preseason. “She’s still learning our system but I think she’s going to be a force on our front line.” Wirth didn’t score in UNC’s first three games but broke out with a pair of goals against Virginia on Oct. 11.

STARTERS The Tar Heels have made just two changed to the starting lineup thus far this season.
