Fruits were less prolific and certainly not as good generally as we have seen in previous years but, nonetheless, they provided a colourful display and good variety. Sadly, the children’s entries were considerably down on last year.

Our 87th Annual Flower Show was held on Saturday 28th July, one of this summer’s rare fair weather days. A pleasing array of floral exhibits, vegetables, cut flowers, cookery etc. made for the usual fanfare of colour in the Village Hall. Again, we were pleased to welcome exhibitors from near and far to show off their handiwork and the fruits of their labours. The cookery classes were extremely well supported; the judge commented on the high standards throughout the classes particularly in the hotly contested Gentlemen-only “Parkin” class where the Lane family swept to victory. The wonderful selection of photographs and handicrafts gave an insight into the wide variety of art and craft skills within our community. Once again the charity knitting class attracted a wonderful rainbow of 20 jumpers which will bring (Continued on page 6) 4 2012 Cup winners MAGDALEN CUP 1967 Michael Snellgrove (Exhibitor with highest points in Class A - residents of King’s Somborne only) VICTOR VAUGHAN CUP Emma Standerline-Johnson (Exhibitor with 2nd highest points in Class A) ELMS SILVER CHALLENGE CUP Michael Snellgrove (Best Collection of Vegetables in Class A) IRENE PIGOTT CUP Patrick Holligan (Best entry for Runner Beans) FIRBANK SILVER CHALLENGE CUP Pollyann Monk (Exhibitor with highest points in Class C – outdoor fruits) R. 5 joy to many children in Romania where they are headed. (Next year we shall be sending our jumpers to support a new Charity – so do start knitting now.) The afternoon kicked off with the now familiar Companion Dog Show. The fête entertainments included the Test Valley Climbing Wall and a fantastic Obstacle Course built by Tim Waterman on behalf of the Scouts. The Silver band entertained us gaily, as folks pottered around the regular attractions of Bouncy Castle, Tombola, Raffle, Cakes, Putting, Croquet and Coconut Shies. Sadly the school Maypole dancers were conspicuously absent and the children’s sports less well supported. Many thanks to the Committee (and beyond) for all their collective hard work in both preparing for the Show in the preceding days and for their joint input on Show Day itself. I would also like to thank other members of the society who contributed to stalls either with donations or by giving their time to help with setting up and dismantling or indeed to help with the running of stalls. Pollyann Monk The wonderful crew of ladies on the teas and refreshments did a roaring trade as people sat and watched the comings and goings. At the end of the afternoon the Cups and Prizes were presented by the President’s wife, Dee Orange, who was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Children’s cup winner, Megan Taylor.

Those who have already agreed to take part would still very much value additional sponsors for this very worthwhile charity. Last year over £44,000 was raised by the HIHCT and this year they too are “going for gold” and have set their sights on increasing this to over £50,000! In 2011, nine churches benefited from grants totalling £37,500 and three more were granted loans amounting to £14,000. In addition with the help of the National Churches Trust five of these churches were offered additional grants to help with urgent repairs. Please note: Ride and Stride is an ecumenical venture and, although the majority of participating churches are Anglican, it is well supported and enjoyed by Baptist, Methodist, Roman Catholic and UR churches and a Salvation Army citadel. If you can help in any of these ways do please speak to me – Norman Denison at Tel.01794.388889 or [email protected] as soon as possible.

Request for help with The Gauntlet For various reasons we have lost the services of a number of volunteers from our pool that helps with collating The Gauntlet each month. That has made it quite difficult over the last few (holiday) months to put together a full team when needed. We would therefore very much appreciate offers of help from dextrous people who could spare just two to two and a half hours at the Epworth Hall, two or three times a year, to assemble the magazine. Please contact Amy Denison (388889) or Linda Aucock (388542) if you would be willing to help.

During the past few years we have undertaken a phased upgrading of the Hall which has been extremely successful, culminating in the latest improvement which is our very attractive Jubilee Room. The next phase will be upgrading the entrance hall which will be followed by work to completely re-decorate and re-furbish the main hall. However we now have a major problem in that our Treasurer has retired and we are urgently looking for someone to take on this role. The work is not difficult since the bookings and invoicing are already dealt with. The Treasurer’s role is one of overseeing the finances, maintaining records helping with future planning and ensuring that the cost of re-development is matched by our fund raising. Our finances are in a healthy state and the Treasurer is supported by the other officers and the Management and Development Committees. We need help! Can you help us? For all Christians, prayer is at the centre of our lives. Within the ordinary and humdrum events of daily living, God is to be found. This day offers an opportunity to learn more about how we might pray and grow closer to God. The day will take place within the context of an extended Eucharist, with a choice of workshops and the chance to explore different and creative ways of praying. Including a Prayer Zone, a Creative Zone, and the labyrinth at Wisdom House next door, workshops will include a choice from:  Contemplative prayer using our bodies  Exploring silence across the traditions  Godly Play  Hands-on prayer  Icons  Ignatian prayer  Prayer and healing  Prayer in time of darkness  Praying in the Spirit  Praying through the sacraments  Praying with the Bible  What are you fighting for? – men and spirituality

This reminded me that the season of Harvest will soon be upon us when we give thanks to God in a very special way. In fact we tend to have our services at the beginning of October but traditionally it is held on or near the Sunday of the Harvest Moon. This is the full moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox, about 23rd September. In two years out of three, the Harvest Moon comes in September, but in some years it occurs in October, so sometimes we get it right. Of course we do not just give thanks at Harvest. In both the Old and the New Testaments we are told to always thank God for everything. We often say that nowadays people have no manners and we often don’t say thank you when we should or express our gratitude. Gratitude means thankfulness, counting your blessings, noticing simple pleasures, and acknowledging everything that you receive. It means learning to live your life as if everything were a miracle and being aware on a continuous basis of how much you have been given. Gratitude shifts your focus from what your life lacks to the abundance that is already present. In addition, behavioural and psychological research has shown the surprising life improvements that can stem from the practice of gratitude. Giving thanks makes people happier and more resilient, it strengthens relationships, it improves health and it reduces stress. Wow! Let us give thanks and recover the lost art of gratitude !
