Shepherd Dean, College of Communication iii Abstract WING, JOHN A., M.S., November 2007, Journalism THE NEW YORK TIMES AND THE SLEEPING GIANT: A QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE CONTENT ANALYSIS OF HOW MYTH WAS USED TO EXPLAIN PEARL HARBOR (166 pp.) Director of Thesis: Joseph Bernt Reporters, most likely influenced by the culture in which they live, shape their reports around stories that are as old as the written word. These ancient characters and plots are often relied upon to provide familiar structures and context to unprecedented events. With this in mind, a quantitative and qualitative content analysis was used to examine coverage of Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor appearing in the New York Times, from December 7, 1941, to July 7, 1942. A sample of 432 articles was selected from the population, representing 20.78 percent of the 2,078 articles recovered. The quantitative study was based on comparing the narrative forms found in news articles to those found in myth. This morphology was used to measure the resemblance between the narrative structures of myth and news. Jack Lule’s Seven Master Myths served as a basis for the myths examined and their narrative structuring, while Vladimir Propp’s Morphology of the Folktale inspired the comparison of forms. The qualitative analysis focused on a close reading of select articles. The attack was initially discussed in terms of the Flood myth, but was later put into terms of the myth of the Hero. The Hero, the Other World, and the Scapegoat myths iv were the most numerous, while the Flood and Hero myth were the most prominent. Those who dissented against the government and commanders of U.S. forces at Pearl Harbor were portrayed as Scapegoats while the Japanese were discussed as Tricksters. Foreign lands were often discussed in terms of the Other World myth. The results of this study are only applicable to the population of articles; however, one observation that emerged contradicts an assumption of previous qualitative researchers. Myth was most often associated with hard-news stories rather than soft-news stories, which contradicts the notion that soft news is a more fertile breeding ground for myth. This, however, could be due to the large number of hard news articles found in war coverage. War censors and Times’ correspondents played powerful roles as mythmakers. Functions of myth were found in 23.8 percent of the 432 articles examined.     ETERNAL LIES ADDENDUM – LOCAL NEWSPAPERS This addendum to the Alexandrian Remix of Eternal Lies adds historically-sourced local newspapers to all of the major locations of the campaign. I have not researched papers for New York (the PCs spend so little time there; and, if in doubt, use the New York Times) or Thibet (the PCs are in such an isolated location that newspapers are unlikely to be available, except perhaps for an international edition of a paper like the Paris Herald Tribune, as described under Bangkok newspapers). Hitting up the morgues of local papers for leads has become such a standard procedural element for Cthulhu-esque investigators that I probably don’t need to pontificate upon it at any great length here. It should be noted that the original campaign references a number of specific newspapers in which specific articles of note are published; those are generally not mentioned here (although obviously they also exist). The purpose of this resource is to provide a firm foundation for the GM to improvise from when the PCs go off the beaten path and begin performing unanticipated background research. When I originally ran the campaign, I also found that it was not particularly uncommon for the globetrotting PCs to specifically request a local newspaper upon checking into a new hotel. Being able to reference specific papers (with a few personalizing factoids to distinguish one broadsheet from another) proved to be a remarkably effective and immersive technique that can contribute greatly to the meaningful sensation of the campaign moving through space and culture.

    MARJORIE KELLY Three Views of the Attack on Pearl Harbor: Navy, Civilian, and Resident Perspectives POPULAR UNDERSTANDING of the attack on Pearl Harbor will undoubtedly be colored by the release of the $135 million epic Pearl Harbor, the fifth most expensive film in movie history. Described as "an adventure/romance in which everything blows up at the end," Disney's Touchstone Pictures recreated the December 7, 1941 Japa- nese attack on the U.S. Navy as its visual climax with an impressive array of special effects. During the film's production, Honolulu Star- Bulletin journalist Burl Burlingame was already at work enumerating the movie's technological inaccuracies and shortcomings.1 In a sec- ond article which focused on the film's portrayal of race, Burlingame noted that originally the producers, executives, and director of Pearl Harbor said they would spare no expense in accurately portraying the attack—even obtaining the approval of veterans groups. During the filming, however, producer Jerry Bruckheimer "waffled mightily on the subject of accuracy," recharacterizing his project as "gee-whiz-it's- just-entertainment."2 With the film's release on Memorial Day of 2001, a new generation's perception of the attack will likely forever be influenced by the images and impressions engendered by the film. The ship was one of many casualties from the deadly attack by the Japanese on a quiet Sunday that President Franklin Roosevelt called "a date which will live in infamy." The Arizona's burning bridge and listing mast and superstructure were photographed in the aftermath of the Japanese attack, and news of her sinking was emblazoned on the front page of newspapers across the land. The photograph symbolized the destruction of the United States Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor and the start of a war that was to take many thousands of American lives. Indelibly impressed into the national memory, the image could be recalled by most Americans when they heard the battle cry, "Remember Pearl Harbor." More than a million people visit the USS Arizona Memorial each year. They file quietly through the building and toss flower wreaths and leis into the water. They watch the iridescent slick of oil that still leaks, a drop at a time, from ruptured bunkers after more than 50 years at the bottom of the sea, and they read the names of the dead carved in marble on the Memorial's walls.
