Email: [email protected] Manuscript received: 8 January 2014, accepted: 7 December 2014 Abstract A solitary unprocessed, 26-cm basalt stone recently found at the Roman (69 AD) site at Kotterbos (Lelystad, the Netherlands), situated 40 km north of the Limes, has been examined petrographically and geochemically. The rock is similar to previously investigated Roman basalt stones and blocks from the Limes in the province of Utrecht. All are alkali olivine basalts and basanites, which are also the dominant rock types in the nearby volcanic hinterland in Germany. On the basis of 23 criteria, including all major and minor elements plus a selection of trace elements, the Kotterbos stone correlates with a distinctive subgroup of Limes basalts. This subgroup is characterised by relatively high Mg# and low TiO2 wt% values, as opposed to the other subgroup with lower Mg# and higher TiO2 wt% values. It is argued that the high Mg#–low TiO2 subgroup and the Kotterbos basalt have common geological provenance(s). Five basalt bodies in the hinterland match the criteria of this subgroup, and might be considered as locations of provenance. Of these five, only Rolandsbogen, located next to an ideal anchorage on the west bank of the Rhine, about 12 km upstream from Bonn, can also conform to sensible Roman demands concerning effective logistics and military safety. Consequently, Rolandsbogen is the most likely site of provenance for the high Mg#–low TiO2 subgroup, which includes the Kotterbos basalt. It is argued that the Kotterbos stone is not a rock that somehow got separated from a shipment of building stones to the northern Limes; rather, it is speculated that the stone was picked up as a stray cobble near the basalt body and taken onboard a Roman vessel moored at the Rolandsbogen anchorage. I investigate digressions and excurses on mountains, rivers, and certain myths associated aetiologically with the land, and demonstrate how Stoic physics and cosmology – in particular the concepts of cosmic (dis)order, collapse, and conflagration – play a role in the way Lucan writes about the landscape in the context of a civil war poem. Building on previous analyses of the Bellum Civile that provide background on its literary context (Ahl, 1976), on Lucan’s poetic technique (Masters, 1992), and on landscape in Roman literature (Spencer, 2010), I approach Lucan’s depiction of the natural world by focusing on the mutual effect of humanity and landscape on each other. UK 1 Introduction French lawyer Bergier published the first work on Roman roads in 162210 having discovered the remains of Roman roads near Rheims. He was so taken with his finds that he began to investigate classical literature and monuments. Bergier's work influenced 17th and 18th century French roadbuilding which in turn influenced British roadbuilders Metcalf, MacAdam and Telford who adopted a scientific approach in developing road construction techniques in the 19th century which are essentially unchanged today. For this reason, an understanding of Roman road engineering is crucial in understanding how present day UK road construction technology evolved.     THE FORTIFICATIONS OF ARCHAIC ROME: SOCIAL AND POLITICAL SIGNIFICANCE Gabriele Cifani Abstract This paper discusses the political meaning of the fortifcation of Rome in parallel with the social and urban transformations which took place in central Tyrrhenian Italy in the 6th century BC. The city of Rome in the course of the 6th century BC was already one of the largest settlements in the central Mediterranean area, which makes this site one of the most advanced experiments in Archaic urban fortifcation.     Terrae amissae: A comparative study of Southwest Germany and Transylvania in the mid-third century AD Volume I of II: Text Evan Sterling Scherer Thesis submitted for the requirement of Doctor of Philosophy in Archaeology School of History, Classics, and Archaeology Newcastle University January 2020 Abstract This thesis is an exercise in archaeological interpretation of the abandonment of frontier areas of the Roman Empire during the mid-third century AD. The regions of Southwest Germany and Transylvania are chosen due to four critical factors. Both are frontier zones beyond the traditional river boundaries of the Empire. They not only had a large military presence, but also urban and rural settlements, providing a diverse assemblage of sites to examine. Furthermore, both regions were ceded by Roman authority during this period. Consequently, this has led to circular argumentation in interpretation of the latest Roman phases of occupation. Similarities of these regions has warranted brief discussion in the past. However, this is the first study to exhaustively work through the data both in German and Romanian. This period of history is crucial in the transition of the Roman World into Late Antiquity, but there is little that can be proven in the archaeological narrative. In general, there is a paucity of literary sources, yet these have led the narrative not only for these regions, but for the Empire as a whole. This thesis seeks to examine published material in a forensic manner, documenting evidence for activity and abandonment during the period, highlighting what is known and what is implied across multiple languages and academic traditions.
