Féile Programme 5Th – 7Th July, 2013 Patrickswell G.A.A. & Camogie Clubs Féile Programme th th 5 – 7 July, 2013 Patrickswell U-14 Hurling Panel Patrickswell U-14 Camogie Panel O'Loughlin Gaels G.A.A. Club, Kilkenny Lucan Sarsfields Camogie Club, Dublin A Word of Welcome Fáilte i ndairire a chur roimh ar gcuairteoirí Féile go Tobar Phádraig an deireadh seachtaine seo. I am delighted to extend on behalf of the Patrickswell GAA club a very sincere welcome to our Féile visitors to Patrickswell this weekend. We have a great Féile tradition in Patrickswell and look forward to continuing our commitment to this model of participation in our national games. I would particularly like to thank the clubs hard working Féile sub committee under the guidance of Raymond Fitzgerald and Breda Leahy and of course to our club sponsors Duggan Systems who are so good to our club and by extension to our community. I have no doubt that we will have a memorable weekend. Pól O Foghlú (Cathaoirleach CLG Tobar Phádraig) On behalf of Bord Na nÓg Tobar Phádraig, I would like to extend an extremely warm welcome to O'Loughlin Gaels and Lucan Sarsfields players, managements and supporters. Féile Na nGael is a fantastic festival of hurling with a focus on enjoyment and the forging of new friendships. We were lucky enough to experience this first hand in Dublin last year and we look forward to ensuring that our guests from Kilkenny and Dublin will return home with great memories of their short stay with us. I would like to thank sincerely all the club members, supporters, parents and sponsors who have all contributed greatly to the organisation of this Féile weekend. I also want to thank all our Juvenile coaches for the excellent work they continue to do to help all our young players reach their potential. Raymond Fitzgerald, (Chairman, Patrickswell Juvenile Club). Patrickswell Camogie Club was founded in 1956. It disbanded for a number of years and was reformed again in 1983. We are affiliated to our Senior GAA club who have been a tremendous support down through the years. As a camogie club we look forward to a fantastic future, all our teams have had great success to date and we hope to continue this. Being part of hosting the Féile in Limerick this year is a very exciting time in Camogie not only for the club and its players but the local supporters. We currently have about 80 girls involved in Camogie for our club at various levels, from U6 to Junior level. Our U14’s are going to have a very busy weekend during the Féile weekend, we wish them every success. We welcome the Lucan Sarsfields Camogie club, Dublin and look forward to meeting both players and supporters and hope that we all have a great sporting weekend. STUDENT JOURNALISM AND NEWS LITERACY PROGRAMME 2020-2021 PRESS PASSelcome to Press Pass 2020 - the eighth year of the NewsBrands Ireland Newspapers in Education (NiE) Winitiative. How does Press Pass work? Press Pass is a complete student journalism and news literacy programme. This workbook is used in conjunction with digital copies of newspapers which are available on www.presspass.ie. By reading the newspapers and using this workbook, students will gain an understanding of how news is produced, how to write like a journalist, and discover the important role newspapers play in our society and the necessity for a free press in a healthy democracy. Teacher’s Lesson Plan A Teacher’s Lesson Plan to accompany this workbook can be downloaded from www.presspass.ie. Designed to equip teachers with practical guidelines and tips for teaching the Press Pass module, the Lesson Plan has options to run the course as a 6 week or 12 week module – entirely dependent on your class group’s interest and ability. What is the aim of Press Pass? The main aim is to encourage students to read and write more. Using newspapers as part of the daily curriculum, teachers and students will get a better understanding of news and current affairs and be exposed to a range of views and analysis - sometimes radical, sometimes infuriating, but always engaging and entertaining - to help them form opinions of their own. What is the Press Pass workbook for? This workbook is to be used in class in conjunction with the newspapers and lesson plan. It looks in detail at the main writing styles and range of skills that make up your daily newspaper: - What is news and how to write a news story - The difference between news and features - The skills required to write commentary - What makes a good photograph - The secrets behind good sports journalism.

  • Concealed Criticism: the Uses of History in Anglonorman Literature
Concealed Criticism: The Uses of History in AngloNorman Literature, 11301210 By William Ristow Submitted to The Faculty of Haverford College In partial fulfillment of the Degree of Bachelor of Arts in History 22 April, 2016 Readers: Professor Linda Gerstein Professor Darin Hayton Professor Andrew Friedman Abstract The twelfth century in western Europe was marked by tensions and negotiations between Church, aristocracy, and monarchies, each of which vied with the others for power and influence. At the same time, a developing literary culture discovered new ways to provide social commentary, including commentary on the power-negotiations among the ruling elite. This thesis examines the the functions of history in four works by authors writing in England and Normandy during the twelfth century to argue that historians used their work as commentary on the policies of Kings Stephen, Henry II, and John between 1130 and 1210. The four works, Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae, Master Wace’s Roman de Brut, John of Salisbury’s Policraticus, and Gerald of Wales’ Expugnatio Hibernica, each use descriptions of the past to criticize the monarchy by implying that the reigning king is not as good as rulers from history. Three of these works, the Historia, the Roman, and the Expugnatio, take the form of narrative histories of a variety of subjects both imaginary and within the author’s living memory, while the fourth, the Policraticus, is a guidebook for princes that uses historical examples to prove the truth of its points. By examining the way that the authors, despite the differences between their works, all use the past to condemn royal policies by implication, this thesis will argue that Anglo-Norman writers in the twelfth century found history-writing a means to criticize reigning kings without facing royal retribution.

It gives me great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to you here to Semple Stadium Thurles on this most significant occasion and a match that forms part of the landmark that is the start of the 2020 inter-county GAA Championships, and also draws down the curtain on the Allianz Hurling Leagues. It is fair to say that there have been several moments when it looked as if we would not be here in this position. In many ways the world we knew and took for granted last March seems a lot longer than seven months ago. So much has been lost, and more important than the freedoms and privileges we so badly miss are the lost lives of the more than 2,500 Irish people all over the island who passed away at the hands of the coronavirus and left a void in the lives of the loved ones who mourn them. As we return to inter-county action the perils of the world we find ourselves in still exist.
