Welcome to our June 2018 edition of the Munce Racing Newsletter

12 MONTHS AT EAGLE FARM

It is hard to believe that is has been 12 months since we moved into the stables at Eagle Farm. It feels like we have been based there a lot longer and it certainly makes a difference with all being at the one location. Owners are able to visit their horses with ease and we have been able to accommodate regular open mornings for syndicators.

MUNCE RACING, NOVA 106.9 & UBET

With the Brisbane Winter Carnival over for another 12 months we would like to thank UBET, Nova 106.9 and in particular ‘Luttsy’ from the morning show for their support during this time. Just one of the promotions that was run during the carnival was when Nova teamed with Munce Racing and UBET to give listeners an “ownership experience” during the carnival. Each time Boomsara ran, five people become part of his “ownership group”, with the chance to $5000 each if he won.

Luttsy said Boomsara garnered a huge following during the promotion. “We had an extraordinary response from our listeners. It was a great way to get people who would otherwise not be interested in racing to take some notice of the carnival and we had heaps of fun with it.”

50 WINNERS FOR CHRIS AND THE STABLE

A huge congratulations to Chris for racking up his 50th winner at the beginning of June when Distroyia won the last race at Beaudesert on the 5th of June.

A big thank you to all our staff at Eagle Farm for their hard work looking after the horses.

AROUND THE STABLE

Our Yearlings

With only a month to go before our yearlings become 2-year-olds it is full steam ahead. With nearly 25 yearlings in our stable this year it is a very exciting time. The staff always look forward to when they come back into the stable after having a nice break to see how they have grown and developed and how their personalities start to come through. They are definitely ‘kids’ with some being a little more cheeky than others. The new season kicks off in September with the 2-year-old trials which is a very exciting time for both owners and the stable. There have been quite a few yearlings that are showing plenty of promise, so don’t miss the opportunity of being a part of one of them as we have only a few shares left.

Our current crop of 2-year-olds

Some of our current 2-year-olds will step out onto the track very soon with Cartland and Deneuve nominated at both the Gold Coast on Saturday and the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

The owners of Mulga Thumper and Racecourse Road are also excited to see their charges back in the stable. After 2 nice trials during June Mulga Thumper returns to track this weekend, nominated at both the Gold Coast and Toowoomba on Saturday. Racecourse Road has only just returned to the stables after have a nice break and time spent at the pre-trainers.

Older Horses

After breaking her maiden at Ipswich on the 25th of May Helfuchi has continued to impress her trainer with her work and attitude at the stables. She has been racing consistently for her owners and continues to improve as she races more. She went to Beaudesert on the 5th of June with Mark Du Plessis maintaining his connection with the filly. Breaking smartly away from the barriers and talking up her normal front running style she was a picture in motion but, unfortunately, in the 50 metres she was caught by eventual winner Chapter and Verse. Chris was more than happy with her effort and stated that the winner had a very huge wrap around it so she certainly was not disgraced. http://www.racingqueensland.com.au/racing-and-results/video-replays/player//bdst/20180605/race/5

A strong third, behind Lean Mean Machine and Zousain in the Sires Produce on the 26th of May was an encouraging sign for Boomsara as he was aimed towards the G1 JJ Atkins on the 9th of June at Doomben. Even though beaten Chris was more than happy with his effort this campaign. ‘I was really proud of all his races this time in. He always gave his all we are all looking forward to when he comes back into the stables after having a well-deserved break.’

New comer to the stable Hard Ruler (All Too Hard x Legislature) has definitely made an impact after arriving from the Mick Price stables in Melbourne. Since arriving in April she has had 3 starts for the stables kicking off this preparation with a hard fought second at the Sunny Coast going down by less than a length. Her next two starts result in 2 wins, both by approx. two & a half lengths over her rivals. Her next start will be in the Grafton Guineas on the 11th of July. Good luck to all her owners.

Zegota is another newcomer to the stables that has also proved her to the stables. Transferring up from Brad Widdup’s stable in Sydney Zegota has taken to the Queensland winter like a duck to water. He three starts have resulted in her breaking her maiden on the 2nd of June following up with another win 2 weeks later on the 17th. ‘She has a heart as big as herself and I could not be more impressed with the way she has stepped up.’ Chris noted after her second win. Her third start this month resulted in a fourth placing but Chris was still happy with how she performed and he is more than confident she will be back in the winner’s circle soon enough. http://www.racingqueensland.com.au/racing-and-results/video-replays/player/thoroughbred/gatt/20180602/race/2 http://www.racingqueensland.com.au/racing-and-results/video-replays/player/thoroughbred/scst/20180617/race/6

Stable stalwart and favourite First Crush may not have chalked up a win with his 2 starts in June but he proved what a tough and determined horse he is. It took a G2 winner from New Zealand and Darren Weir trained horse to relegate him into second position in both the Ipswich Cup and the Caloundra Cup.

Bruno (as he is known around the stables) is one of those horses that always puts in and is so honest.

He will now head to the Grafton Cup on the 12th of July.

Keep your eyes open for……..

Tevye, Satyricon, Hellaroo and Keep Your Roses. All have shown their trainer the potential they have and are due to break through this preparation.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Chief Steward Allan Reardon Retires

Allan Reardon has finished as Queensland's chief steward but will be looking to continue as part of the industry. Reardon had been head steward with the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission since it started three years ago after holding a similar position with Racing Queensland.

His contract finished on Saturday at the Sunshine Coast on Caloundra Cup day and he will be replaced by Singapore-based Peter Chadwick next month. Daniel Aurisch will be acting chief steward until Chadwick starts.

The Brisbane Racing Club gave Reardon a farewell last week which was attended by some of Australia's former top stewards including Ray Murrihy, Terry Bailey, Reid Sanders and Greg Rudolph.

"I feel I still have plenty to offer the industry so let us see what happens when the dust settles," Reardon said.

Chris said that it was a sad day to see Allan retire and that he had been an icon of Queensland racing for a very long time. ‘I have ridden under his stewardship from when I was an apprentice. He has always been a man with a lot of integrity and was very easy to talk to and he will be sadly missed. I wish him all the best in his future endeavours.’

Industry Statement – Point of Consumption Tax

Racing Queensland (RQ) looks forward to engaging with the State Government following the release of the budget papers confirming the introduction of a point of consumption tax on wagering.

The tax will be applied at a rate of 15% of net wagering revenue earned from bets placed by Queensland residents through betting operators licensed in Australia.

The decision to defer the introduction of the tax to 1 October 2018 provides an opportunity for RQ to further engage government on how the taxation revenue will best support QLD racing.

Racing Queensland CEO Brendan Parnell said, “it’s encouraging to see the government is listening carefully to the issues raised by all industry stakeholders on how POC tax receipts on racing could be applied to sustain and grow racing.”

“We believe that a tax on racing should be used to fund racing, as a tax on sport should be used to fund sport. RQ looks forward to continuing to work with the Racing Minister and Treasurer on this critical issue.”

TIM TAM – BISCUIT, RACEHORSE OR BOTH

Oh My Goodness who does not love a biscuit!! But did you ever wonder how this Arnott’s favourite got its name?

The biscuit was created by Ian Norris, who was the director of food technology at Arnott's. During 1958, he took a world trip looking for inspiration for new products. While in Britain, he found the Penguin biscuit and decided to "make a better one. The Tim Tam went on to the market in 1964.

They were named by Ross Arnott, who attended the 1958 and decided that the name of the winning horse, Tim Tam, was perfect for a planned new line of biscuits.

Tim Tam was a dark bay horse sired by and out of (both sire and dam listed on the Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century) and he was owned and bred by . Tim Tam was trained by Hall of Fame trainer Jimmy Jones.

Tim Tam won the , the , the , the , the Forerunner Stakes and the Derby Trial en route to winning the 1958 Kentucky Derby.

After winning the Tim Tam was considered to have a strong chance to capture the American Triple Crown. However, in the , coming down the home stretch toward the lead that seemed to assure victory, Tim Tam fractured a sesamoid bone and hobbled the last yards across the finish line in second place. His injury ended his career but he went on to be a successful sire.

Although his racing season was cut short, Tim Tam still was elected American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse in 1958 and in 1985 he was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.
