Falkirk Archives (Archon Code: GB558) FALKIRK ARCHIVES Local authority records Falkirk Museums records finding aid Falkirk Museums had its origins in the original Falkirk Museum, set up in 1926 by the Arnotdale Foundation and Falkirk Archaeological and Natural History Society with support from Falkirk Town Council. Grangemouth Town Council also supported the development of museum collections through Grangemouth Library and the work of Robert Porteous. Falkirk Museum closed in the 1960s and the collections were put in somewhat insecure storage in the stables in Callendar Park. In 1972 a Curator was appointed as part of Falkirk Public Library to re-open Falkirk Museum and develop collections. In 1975 Falkirk Museums was set up as a section within the Libraries & Museums Department of Falkirk District Council, combining the collections of Falkirk and Grangemouth. Falkirk Museums was re-structured as a separate section of Leisure Department in 1989 and transferred to Falkirk Council in 1996. It operated within Community and Environmental Services and then Community Services, latterly as the Heritage & Learning section of Cultural Services with the amalgamation of the Entertainment Section and the Museums. In July 2011 Falkirk Museums became part of Falkirk Community Trust, operating within Heritage. Awards A1464.002 1976 Museum of the Year Award.
