Opioid Forum at TAHS A love affair with the brain.

PROWLER STAFF PHOTO Expecting an auditorium full of concerned citizens who wanted to be here, it was surprising to see about 26 people seated, all who ended up showing. Knowing that about 20,000 automated calls were made to reach out and get people to attend this event, plus being open to the public, it was disappointing. Clearly, the people who came to speak cared deeply about the issue at hand.

This disorder usually starts just from the medication that one gets prescribed for pain, and from there it spirals into an addiction and the need for more. And it is known that opioid abuse affects one out of four families, so there should be more concern and drive to learn more about how to help.

13 people die a day from an overdose in PA – this truly hit everyone. The total number of overdoses in PA in 2016 was 4,672, something that was said best by Mike Donahue, that “this is happening here and now, and not to someone else’s kids, but to our own.”

In 1981, the amount of people treated for heroin overdose was 2%, and since then, the number has doubled. It seems like the heroin changed too, it became pure and now in powder form. Donahue had said that the experience that really seemed to bring just how bad this problem was getting into light was back in 1997 when there were seven overdoses in six days, which was unheard of at the time. Now it has become somewhat of an expected thing that happens, which shows just how desensitized to the issue people really are. Repeatedly stated throughout the forum that we’re going to lose a generation from overdoses since ages 19-26 are the ones majorly affected by this malignant disorder.

One of the more uplifting things discussed at the forum was how our ambulances and police officers now carry Narcan, a drug in the form of an injection or nose spray which is given to combat the effects of an overdose. One downside is how long it can take to get to the site to respond, especially if the call isn’t made ASAP, so Narcan may be useless at that point. Either way, it is a step in the right direction.

The prison system was also discussed. Putting people away for opioid abuse isn’t helping them. They come out of prison and they go right back to their dealers, so then the drug court comes into play. Wyoming County has had the drug court for ten years, and the results are amazing. 82% of graduates remain crime free and make their way back into society, but it is also a dedication, considering the program takes two and a half years.

In the end, it will take more than just one person to make a change. It will take a country, and one way to start is to change the stigma surrounding the disorder. Because it’s not a character thing, it’s a chemistry thing. One recovery or one change can cause a ripple effect. So go be that drop in the pond.
