03 TTOC ABOUT THE TTOC

Established in 1946, the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee serves as the National Olympic Committee, Commonwealth Games Association and Beach & Sand Games Association for Trinidad and Tobago. The TTOC is a non-profit organization focused on supporting and empowering Trinidad and Tobago’s athletes to achieve sporting excellence. We are responsible for fielding Team TTO athletes for the Olympic, Youth Olympic, Pan American, Commonwealth, Commonwealth Youth and serves as the steward of the Olympic Movement in Trinidad and Tobago. Funded principally through grants from Olympic Solidarity, Panam Sports and corporate sponsorship, the TTOC is independent of the Government and governmental funding, other than contributions by the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs to national teams’ representation at International Games.

NATIONAL SPORTING ORGANIZATIONS

National Sporting Organizations (NSOs) govern and manage all aspects of their individual sports within Trinidad and Tobago. The NSOs are responsible for training, competition and the development of their sports, as well as selecting athletes for Team TTO at International, Regional and National competitions. There are forty- three (43) NSO’s affiliated with the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee which comprises of Olympic, Commonwealth, Pan American Sports and other sport affiliated organizations.

01 06 TTOC COMMONWEALTH YOUTH GAMES 2021

Trinidad and Tobago, through the efforts of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee and the Trinidad and Tobago Commonwealth Games Association won the bid to host the 2021 Commonwealth Youth Games.

This historic feat was a result of the vision, hard work and dedication of three young ladies, Chanelle Young, Rheeza Grant and Kwanieze John, who conceptualised and prepared an impressive presentation delivered to the Commonwealth Games Federation by the President, Brian Lewis and Secretary General, Annette Knott.

Athlete Career Programme

In 2019, TTOC hosted its first two-day transitional development programme focused on areas such as anti- doping, elite athlete performance, sports psychology, strategic planning, nutrition, branding and financial management. In addition, Carla Parris, Image and Branding attorney at law, assisted athletes within the workshop on how athletes can create legal entrepreneurial ways besides sponsorship and government support in order to generate other revenue streams. Of course, this topic lead to discussions around personal branding and brand activities in a way that is congruent with their values, the values of their sport and beyond sport.

In keeping with the International Olympic Committee’s vision 2020, which focuses on athlete’s voice, and National Olympic Committee’s Setting up of an Athletes Services Commission, the

Following the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) disciplinary Commission and CAS decision to disqualify the Jamaican team who placed first in the Athletics, Men’s 4x100m Relay event at the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, Beijing 2008 and following the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) announcement, the Trinidad and Tobago relay team composed of Mr. Aaron Armstrong, Keston Bledman, Richard Thompson, and was awarded the first-place medal. Team Support Grant

Every quadrennial the TTOC is granted the opportunity to select a team sport that possess great potential to qualify and medal at the Olympic Games. The selected team is given financial support in the form of coverage for training camps, match readiness and qualifying tournaments for two years prior to the Olympic Games. The Committee identifies a list of sports that displayed great potential over the years prior. The list is then broken down based on plans, achievements, cost and potential to qualify especially if the qualification is a point system, the team sport selected was Beach Volleyball, both men and women. Beach Volleyball, through this support Grant, has successfully qualified and participated in Commonwealth Games 2018 (historically), CAC Games 2018, Pan American Games 2019 and are now in the Semi-final Round of the Olympic Qualifier 2020.

Adopting an entrepreneurial, vibrant and dynamic market driven approach to revenue generation remains a commitment of the TTOC as we continue to facilitate athlete centered programmes and projects.

The Team TTO brand continues to strengthen as a result of the successful performance of Trinidad and Tobago’s athletes at the Pan American Games Lima 2019 and with a number of athletes qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Team TTO continues to build a strong digital presence on the mainstream social media platforms with the continued efforts to promote and raise awareness of TeamTTO and all its activities.

Sport Industry TT

On March 7, TTOC hosted the Sport IndustryTT Conference 2019, themed “Entrepreneurship – Identifying the gaps, Changing the mindset, Turning Ideas into action”.

At the Hyatt Regency Hotel, participants engaged in riveting discussions around four key topics: – ‘Turning the Brand into Revenue: Growing the overall brand of Trinidad and Tobago’; – ‘Double-edged Sword, The Inpact of Crime on Tourism and the Impact of Sport on Crime’; – ‘Better Sport Governance – A Winning Strategy for a Sustainable Sport Industry’; and – ‘The Sport Tourism Opportunity’.

Delivering the feature address was Dale Neuburger, President of UANA and Vice President of FINA who spoke on Best Practices in Sports Tourism and a Suggested Path for Trinidad and Tobago.
