Its principle aim is to engage with recent revisionist accounts of the various dynasties within the Uí Néill; these necessitate a radical reappraisal of our understanding of their origins and genesis as a dynastic confederacy, as well as the geo-political landsape of the central midlands. Consequently, this paper argues that there is a pressing need to address such issues via more focused analyses of local kingdoms and political landscapes. Holistic understandings of polities like Luigne Breg are fundamental to framing new analyses of the genesis of the Uí Néill based upon interdisciplinary assessments of landscape, archaeology and documentary sources. In the latter part of the paper, an attempt is made to to initiate a wider discussion regarding the nature of kingdoms and collective identities in early medieval Ireland in relation to other other regions of northwestern Europe. -

BOOK THREE CHAPTER THREE Chapter Two of Book Three of Dirty Birre extends from about 976 A. D. to about 1086 A. D., which is that period from the time of Domhnall (King No. 173) to the time of Toirdhealbhach Ua Briain (King No. 178) who mled with opposition from 1055 A. D. to 1086 A. D. The continuation of this history of Ireland in Chapter Three of Book Three will extend back three years or so, as the dates of the rule of the Irish kings overlap so that 1083 will be a noted date for the beginning of the mle of the next Irish Monarch. It is probably important to remind the reader that the High Kings (or Ard Righ) of Ireland at this time, all mled Ireland with opposition from others, and that started after the time of the battle of Clontarf, when Brian Bom and his son were killed by the Danes. No. 179 1083 A. D. to 1121 A. D. DOMHNALL MAC LOCHLAINN (with opposition) He was also known as Donall MacLoghlin, son of Ardgal, King of Aileach, as Donall O'Loghlann, as Domnall macArdgar O'Lochlainn O'Neill, as Domnall Ua Lochlainn (by Byrne). He is listed as Domnall by O'Corrain in his table of the Kings of the Northern Ui Neill. He was also King of Aileach. He was the son of Ardgar macLochlain, the king of Aileach. He jointly contested with Muircheartach Ua Briain who would become King No. 180 In 1083 A. D., Domnall Ua Lochlainn assumed the kingship of Cenel Eoghain. -

CHAPTER 04 - Clodagh Downey 7/20/15 1:11 PM Page 1 CHAPTER 4 Literature and learning in early medieval Meath CLODAGH DOWNEY The medieval literature of Ireland stands out among the vernacular literatures of western Europe for its volume, its diversity and its antiquity, and within this treasury of cultural riches, Meath holds a prominence greatly disproportionate to its geographical extent, however that extent is reckoned. Indeed, the first decision confronting anyone who wishes to consider this subject is to define its geographical limits: the modern county of Meath is quite a different entity to the medieval kingdom of Mide from which it gets its name and which itself designated different areas at different times. It would be quite defensible to include in a survey of medieval literature those areas which are now under the administration of other modern counties, but which may have been part of the medieval kingdom at the time that that literature was produced. -

The following does not exceed the word limit (80,000 words) set out by the Division of Archaeology and Anthropology degree committee. 2 Abstract Economy and Authority: A study of the coinage of Hiberno-Scandinavian Dublin and Ireland Andrew R. Woods The aim of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between political authority and economic change in the tenth to twelfth centuries AD. This is often interpreted as a period of dramatic economic and political upheaval; enormous growth in commerce, the emergence of an urban network and increasingly centralised polities are all indicative of this process. Ireland has rarely been considered in discussion of this sort but analysis of Ireland’s political economy has much to contribute to the debate. This will be tackled through a consideration of the coinage struck in Ireland between c.995 and 1170 with focus upon the two themes of production and usage. In analysing this material the scale and scope of a monetary economy, the importance of commerce and the controlling aspects of royal authority will each be addressed. The approach deployed is also overtly comparative with material from other contemporary areas, particularly England and Norway, used to provide context. -

THE VIKINGS IN SCOTLAND AND IRELAND IN THE NINTH CENTURY - DONNCHADH Ó CORRÁIN 1998 ABSTRACT: This study attempts to provide a new framework for ninth-century Irish and Scottish history. Viking Scotland, known as Lothlend, Laithlinn, Lochlainn and comprising the Northern and Western Isles and parts of the mainland, especia lly Caithness, Sutherland and Inverness, was settled by Norwegian Vikings in the early ninth century. By the mid-century it was ruled by an effective royal dyna sty that was not connected to Norwegian Vestfold. In the second half of the cent ury it made Dublin its headquarters, engaged in warfare with Irish kings, contro lled most Viking activity in Ireland, and imposed its overlordship and its tribu te on Pictland and Strathclyde. When expelled from Dublin in 902 it returned to Scotland and from there it conquered York and re-founded the kingdom of Dublin i n 917. And luaitís fri bága bil certa ocus cána in cóicid, cech recht ríagla co rogor cech tress blíadna a chórogod. ‘On the kalends of August free from reproach they would go thither every third year: they would hold seven races, for a glorious object, seven days in the week. There they would discuss with strife of speech the dues and tributes of the province, every legal enactment right piously every third year it was settled.’1 This eleventh-century depiction of a gathering (óenach) held at regular intervals at Carmain provides an imagined glimpse of medieval Ireland at work and play. Conventionally but misleadingly translated ‘fair’, the óenach was an institution in which the wider community played a part. Among those said to have been assembled on this particular occasion were ‘the clerics and laity of the Leinstermen, as well as the wives of the nobility’ (clérig, láeich Lagen ille, mnái na ndagfher). Fasting was undertaken there ‘against wrong and oppression’ (ra 1 Metrical Dindshenchas, iii, 18-19 (lines 208-16). I am grateful to my colleague, Dr Fiona Edmonds, for perceptive comments on what follows. 1 anrecht, ra écomlund).2 Misconduct was forbidden;3 knowledge was imparted of various kinds.4 Kings controlled these occasions, convening an óenach for a variety of reasons. It was to celebrate his accession to the kingship of Leinster that the óenach at Carmain was held by Donnchad mac Gilla Phátraic in 1033 and this poem may mark that specific event.5 Máel Sechnaill mac Domnaill, king of Mide, had earlier hosted a similar assembly at Tailtiu [Teltown, County Meath] in 1007, when he had already been ruling for more than a quarter of a century and had achieved considerable success.6 His revival of óenach Tailten was designed to bolster his authority further, and it too was commemorated in a composition attributed to Máel Sechnaill’s court-poet, Cúán ua Lothcháin. -

Social, Legal, Ecclesiastical, Theological and Philosophical Considerations In the preceding paper, it was described how Muirchertach Ua Briain propagandized his bid to be Ard Rí, both by commissioning the panegyric on his ancestor Brian, Cogadh Gáedhel re Gallaibh (The War of the Irish against the Vikings), and by having his juridical scholars work out interpretations of the Lebor na Cert (The Book of Rights) as well as the applicable laws within the Brehon tradition deemed most favorable to his cause. Brehon Law. In historical notes to the ratiocinative fiction of Sister Fidelma, whose stories unfold more than four hundred years before Lafracoth flourished, Novelist Tremayne writes: Ireland, in the seventh century AD, was governed by a system of sophisticated laws called the Laws of the Fénechus, or land tillers, which became more popularly known as the Brehon laws, deriving from the word breitheamh –a judge. Tradition has it that these laws were first gathered in 714 BC by order of the High King, Ollamh Fódhla. Over a thousand years later, in AD 438, The High King, Laoghaire, appointed a commission of nine learned people to study, revise and commit the laws to the new writing in Latin characters. One of those serving on the commission was Patrick, eventually to become patron saint of Ireland. After three years, the commission produced a written text of the laws which is the first known codification. 1 The Encyclopedia of Ireland informs readers that Brehon Law was the legal system of medieval Ireland gradually supplanted by English Common Law after the Anglo-Norman invasion.
