Sure, the music doesn’t occupy the same spots on the pop charts it once did, and it’s not uncommon for literally any band with guitars and some kind of resemblance to Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath or Nir- vana to be anointed the “saviours” of rock. But it’s not really dead, is it? White Reaper’s response to this conundrum is telling: “I kind of don’t care,” says frontman Tony Esposito. Their brand of rock is a typical one — loud, fast, energetic and loaded with pop hooks. But it’s also the sound of a band who don’t feel burdened by the task of carrying the torch of , and with no interest in what classic rock purists think. You Deserve Love continues down the path of the tighter, poppier tunes found on The World’s Best American Band, with catchy lines and strong hooks. Tracks like “Headwind” and “Saturday” pick up where “Judy French” left off, and show growth in the band’s style of pop songwriting. The reckless punk abandon of White Reaper Does It Again has been toned down substantially, but hints of it can still be found in the double-time stylings of “Raw.” There are moments when the band seem more interested in sounding like than the , but their songwriting is strong enough that they can still have it both ways. You Deserve Love packs plenty of pop hooks into its short runtime without losing any of its rock swagger. White Reaper are playing like they have nothing to lose on You Deserve Love, and the record is all the better for it. Rating: 8/10” - Exclaim!, 10/21/19 American Songwriter looks closely at Jesse Malin’s Sunset Kids “ is a melting pot of people and artists. But even for musicians born and bred there, Jesse Malin has a wildly diverse resume. He’s played in hardcore bands, found brief fame fronting the tough-rocking, poufy-haired in the mid-late ‘90s, and from 2003 on has been releasing strong, poetically charged, expertly crafted, street-smart rocking albums similar to fellow New Yorkers and . While Malin’s music hasn’t caught on with a mass audience, it certainly isn’t for lack of trying. He has attracted a well-deserved cult following, at least partially due to affiliations with more marquee names from , and to , and now, Lucinda Williams. The latter two served as producers and col- laborators. Choose any of his eight or so previous solo sets to find a rugged combination of Malin’s hooky but edgy melodies, sharp word-play and low key yet inviting vocals. Williams jumps on board this one to help things along with her name recognition and two co-writes. The most impressive is, perhaps not surprisingly, the disc’s first single “Room 13.” It’s a sweetly strumming tune with somewhat dark lyrics about spending time in the titular hotel room where “The walls are paper thin/ And I’ve seen everybody’s sins.” It’s an inviting track that wouldn’t be out of place on an Eagles album. Generally this is a more laid back offering for Malin, especially since its title refers to the death of key people in his life, including his father and also this disc’s engineer, David Bianco. Upbeat selections like the subtly Tex-Mex “Chemical Heart” with its incisive and witty kiss-off lyrics “I don’t wanna be your Ike and Tina/ I don’t wanna be your remote control/ I don’t wanna be your Bernie Taupin/ I don’t wanna be your stepping stone” are pure Malin. He goes country on the tender ballad “Promises” with sobbing slide from and shifts into low-boil R&B on the bubbling under “Do You Really Want to Know.” A few more rockers on the order of the Armstrong co-write “Strangers & Thieves” would have raised the overall temperature, but each of these 14 tracks is an exquisitely constructed gem. How much is due to Williams is unclear, but like her work, these songs never feel rushed or lackadaisical. Only two break the four-minute mark, packing words and hooks into a compact format ripe for radio play especially on the Americana format that has largely ignored Malin so far. Hopefully that changes with this higher profile project. If it does, his newfound audience has a treasure trove of other exciting Malin catalog items to discover.
