Annual Report 2011-2012 From the PresidentOn Eagles’ Wings Development To all our SBA families and friends – Summer Greetings! We hope you and your families have been able to escape from these 100-degree days … be it in the ocean, a lake or with a sprinkler in the back yard. I was blessed to enjoy a really nice Father’s Day earlier this summer. Two of our three daughters were able to join us for the Sunday celebration for both me and my son-in-law. Brady, his son and my grandson, had the most fun of all, tearing into our gifts – or should I say into the wrapping paper. R-i-i-i-p-p-p - then on to the next. I’m guessing if he had access to just one pretty empty box a day, even the same exact package over and over, his every day would be Christmas. How great would that be! And how long has it been since any of us have woken up feeling like that? I’ve been reading John Kralik’s 2010 book, “365 Thank Yous.” I’d recommend it for everyone. After several years of sliding ever deeper into an emotional, professional and family abyss, the author was graced with one of those miraculous moments of clarity … when he came to understand that despite his troubles and misery, he’d actually been blessed with much and many for which to be thankful. But seldom if ever had he acknowledged any of it - or them. And so he set out to change his focus for one year, within and without, and promised himself to write one heartfelt thank you note every day. Of course, for that to occur, he’d have to re-invent the complainer he had become and focus on all the goodness and good people in his life. Seeing the wonder of our own world. How long has it been since we’ve woken up feeling like that? The rest of the book is a most enjoyable and reflective read of his journey. I mention it because this edition of our magazine includes our yearly Annual Report in which we take pause from our quarterly school news to give public thanks to all those who have helped us in so many different ways through this past year. Talk about goodness and good people!! There’s no question we could spend every day of EVERY year enumerating the hundreds if not thousands of blessings that God - and you - have bestowed upon us. A facility that’s incredible .. HVAC that works .. technology that shrinks the globe .. earthworms that expose and educate.. green fields that soften a fall .. tuition aid that helps the needy .. security that helps safeguard .. library books that spark imagination .. opening nights that showcase talent … and a chapel that’s always open! Our over three hundred donors have combined to give us restricted and unrestricted gifts in excess of $385,000. We cannot thank all of you enough. And when we include all those who donated time and talent – and prayer – lots of prayer, our school is among the most blessed of those who do what we do. My daughter is trying to teach Brady, the little one, how to say ‘Thank You.’ For when the people in his life give him cookies, his sippy cup, or one of those little fruity yogurt things he loves so much. For everything really. Hopefully, he’ll learn and never forget – nor ever have reason to write about a period of his life when he somehow forgot about all the goodness. We, too, promise never to forget. God has blessed us with so much. And among our very best blessings are all of you. Thank you for all you do for the students, staff and families of SBA! Have a wonderful summer! George Valadie President

From the Editor As our 2011-12 academic year has come to a close, we are reminded of the highlights that have characterized this incredible year at St. Benedict. This issue of On Eagles’ Wings points to some special and extraordinary moments that we all have experienced. First, be sure to take in the cover exposing our seniors’ collective accomplishments as they graced the halls of SBA. They proudly and excitedly get together near the end of school for one last group shot posed in the spirit wear of their colleges-of-choice. What we wanted to do, as well, is highlight some statistics as they move on to these institutions of higher learning. Incredible stats, for sure! As Mr. Valadie mentioned and you can see, this is the Annual Report issue that includes the “Lasting Legacies” campaign coordinated by Development Director Lori Trew Regis (’91). Please take time to read the names of individuals, companies and groups who have impacted our success this year. But, also, take in the “Annual Report” of all the academic, athletic, service and arts accomplishments that we have highlighted. All of this makes for a pleasant read about the successes of which we can all be proud. Thanks for a great year, SBA! From the President of the Board…

The SBA Board of Advisors recently completed its activities for the 2011/2012 year. The board has grown in numbers and involvement in school related activities. New members this year are - Jon Bascom, Nick Griffin (’98), Joe Incardona and Paul Schuhlein.

Recent areas of focus have included board involvement in the Don Williams SACS Accreditation process along with our continued efforts in fund raising in conjunction with Lori Regis, our development director and our ongoing budget focus with Kathy Hurt, our finance director.

It has been my honor to be part of the Board for the past several years and especially this year as president. One of the most memorable aspects has been the opportunity to work with and get to know better the St. Benedict staff and faculty. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated team of professionals who make our school the outstanding, well-rounded educational institution that it is. My challenge to each of you is to further involve yourself in at least one area of the school and work to make it better.

Lay Catholic Minister has SBA student body rockin’

Nationally acclaimed Catholic youth entertainer and minister, Jesse Manibusan, in town for the Diocesan Youth Conference held each year at St. Benedict performed for SBA students on the Friday before the weekend confer- ence in March. He had the students laughing, singing and dancing with his music, comedy and spirit. The Eagles’ house was rocking for over an hour. Jesse has the special gift of being able to engage and reach out to any individual — either one-on-one at a confirmation retreat, or within a large group of teens at a

youth rally, or with a crowd of 500,000 people at World Youth Day. It doesn’t matter how small or large the au- dience is, this dynamic performer touches the soul and has everyone praising God with him. Jesse calls himself a Catholic lay evangelist who uses music, comedy and stories to connect with people. Very much in demand around the country as a motivational speaker, Jesse’s uplifting message touches all generations. “God gives us life. We may have disappointments, we may be really angry or depressed,” said the singer. “It’s good we can have a moment to say to God, ‘Thank you for life.’”
