Photo courtesy Furman Singers Archives. 125 ix ABSTRACT Since 1946, the Furman Singers have been the flagship choral ensemble of Furman University, a private, liberal arts university in Greenville, South Carolina. The chorus has traveled extensively within the United States and abroad, serving as ambassadors for Furman University and the ensemble’s stated mission of “Discipline, Beauty, Excellence.” This study documents Furman University’s early history, the first few decades of choral activity at Furman University, and the complete history of Furman Singers through the tenure of Dr. Bingham Vick, Jr. The study explores 1) the individuals, events, and institutions that led to the formation of Furman Singers, 2) the mission of Furman Singers and the ways in which that mission has changed over the decades, 3) the individuals, events, and institutions that have shaped that mission, 4) the events that demonstrate contributions to the choral art on the part of Furman Singers, and 5) the ways in which the tour performance repertoire of Furman Singers reflects the ensemble’s mission.

    Bob Dylan's Life Robert Allen Zimmerman born May 24 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota known by the pseudonym of Bob Dylan, was an American singer, song-writer, musician and author. He is an influential figure in popular music and culture. He published his album on Columbia Records and Asylum Records. Since 1994, he also published seven books of drawings and paintings. As a musician, he sold more than 100 million records, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He received many awards including eleven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, an Academy Award and many other prizes such as an NME Award. Nowadays Dylan still receives huge recognition: in 2012 the President Barack Obama gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom and in 2016 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature « for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition ».

    A Discography of the Choral Symphony by J. F. Weber In previous issues of this Journal (XV:2-3; XVI:l-2), an effort was made to compile parts of a composer discography in depth rather than breadth. This one started in a similar vein with the realization that SO CDs of the Beethoven Ninth Symphony had been released (the total is now over 701). This should have been no surprise, for writers have stated that the playing time of the CD was designed to accommodate this work. After eighteen months' effort, a reasonably complete discography of the work has emerged. The wonder is that it took so long to collect a body of information (especially the full names of the vocalists) that had already been published in various places at various times. The Japanese discographers had made a good start, and some of their data would have been difficult to find otherwise, but quite a few corrections and additions have been made and some recording dates have been obtained that seem to have remained 1.Dlpublished so far. The first point to notice is that six versions of the Ninth didn't appear on the expected single CD. Bl:lhm (118) and Solti (96) exceeded the 75 minutes generally assumed (until recently) to be the maximum CD playing time, but Walter (37), Kegel (126), Mehta (127), and Thomas (130) were not so burdened and have been reissued on single CDs since the first CD release. On the other hand, the rather short Leibowitz (76), Toscanini (11), and Busch (25) versions have recently been issued with fillers.

    Revista AV Notas, Nº8 ISSN: 2529-8577 Diciembre, 2019 EL CAMINO DE VERDI AL VERISMO: LA GIOCONDA DE PONCHIELLI THE ROAD OF VERDI TO VERISM: LA GIOCONDA DE PONCHIELLI Joaquín Piñeiro Blanca Universidad de Cádiz RESUMEN Con Giuseppe Verdi se amplificaron y superaron los límites del Bel Canto representado, fundamentalmente, por Rossini, Bellini y Donizetti. Se abrieron nuevos caminos para la lírica italiana y en la evolución que terminaría derivando en la eclosión del Verismo que se articuló en torno a una nutrida generación de autores como Leoncavallo, Mascagni o Puccini. Entre Verdi y la Giovane Scuola se situaron algunos compositores que constituyeron un puente entre ambos momentos creativos. Entre ellos destacó Amilcare Ponchielli (1834-1886), profesor de algunos de los músicos más destacados del Verismo y autor de una de las óperas más influyentes del momento: La Gioconda (1876-1880), estudiada en este artículo en sus singularidades formales y de contenido que, en varios aspectos, hacen que se adelante al modelo teórico verista. Por otra parte, se estudian también cuáles son los elementos que conserva de los compositores italianos precedentes y las influencias del modelo estético francés, lo que determina que la obra y su compositor sean de complicada clasificación, aunque habitualmente se le identifique incorrectamente con el Verismo.
