Greater Manchester MPs of all parties work collaboratively to provide a strong voice for the city- region in Westminster, working alongside the Mayor and local business and political leaders to help maximise future investment and growth for the benefit of the communities throughout Greater Manchester. We want to emphasise the following key points: After decades of underinvestment in strategic rail infrastructure and transport in the North, HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail, if combined with a clear commitment to much needed investment in our intra city transport networks, will provide the basis for a once-in-a-generation programme to secure the levels of investment and productivity in our northern cities that is essential to transform the North’s economic output and the life chances of residents here. Given the scale of the challenge to rebalance and level-up the UK, the GMAPPG strongly believes that choices cannot be made between HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail. Only by delivering the two initiatives together, as a future strategic rail network can we achieve the transformational economic outcomes that we share with Government. The UK's 56th General Election saw a record number of ethnic Pakistanis being elected as MPs. With ten seats in Parliament, the community has never been so well represented in the political sphere in the UK. This historic result represents the mainstreaming of the community. We are proud of the achievements and efforts of our fellow British Pakistanis and wish to celebrate their success. And so, we have dedicated this edition of the newsletter to applauding the re-elected and newly elected British Pakistani MPs. We are also delighted to announce two upcoming BPF events. BPF's Women's Network has collaborated with playwright and actor, Aizzah Fatima, to host a story-telling workshop and tickets for her solo comedy show, Dirty Paki Lingerie. In June, BPF will also be convening its second Business and Professionals Club event. The function is a follow-up after the resounding success of our Business and Professionals Network launch event in March and will focus on entrepreneurship and business pitching. While there have been many positive developments here in the UK, we are outraged and deeply saddened by events in Pakistan; the attack on the Ismaili community, and the murder of civil society activist Sabeen Mahmud. Our heart goes out the victims of the senseless violence in Pakistan, and we hope and pray for a peaceful and tolerant country.     Yasmin Qureshi Member of Parliament for Bolton South East The Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP 7 April 2021 Prime Minister 10 Downing Street Ref: YQ18086 London SW1A 2AA Dear Prime Minister, Pakistan and Bangladesh Red List Travel Ban We are writing in relation to the decision to place Pakistan and Bangladesh on the travel ‘red list’ with the ban coming into force at very short notice at 4am on 9 April 2021. The placing of these countries on the red list will have a huge impact on many UK residents. The UK has over 1.1m British Pakistanis and a large number of British Bangladeshis in the UK. Whilst we support measures where there is a clear need to act to protect the UK in relation to COVID-19, we have major concerns about the way this plan has been implemented without providing clear evidence for that decision. Many UK citizens have travelled to those countries in accordance with the Government’s COVID-19 guidelines. The vast majority will have travelled to visit family, including elderly relatives, whom they may not have seen for over a year. They will have already paid for return flights but are now in a position where they will have to pay for new flights in order to return before the ban is put in place. Flight costs are currently around £2,000 per single ticket. Most of the people who have travelled will have paid for return flights priced at around £500 which are now useless. The vast majority of UK residents currently in those countries will have had to save up for some time to fly over there.
