Jeb Bush Praises USDOE for Holding States Accountable for Student Learning

Tallahassee, FL – Today, Jeb Bush, Governor of from 1999-2007, and Chairman of the Foundation for Excellence in praised the U.S. Department of Education for holding states accountable for student learning as they released the first round of federal waivers from provisions of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

“Over a decade ago, the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) made education a national priority by holding states accountable for student achievement. Today, the U.S. Department of Education confirmed its commitment to high standards and student achievement. These waivers grant regulatory relief in exchange for advancing real reform, and I am proud that Florida has earned one. I thank Education Secretary for his leadership and for rewarding states for implementing bold reforms that improve the quality of education and student achievement.”

“The waivers build upon the foundation of high standards established by NCLB by providing greater flexibility so leading states can continue to improve the quality of education for their students. Flexibility with accountability encourages states to develop transparent accountability systems, high standards for all students, quality education choices, and a workforce of effective educators. This is something that leaders from both parties can support.”
