Located in what is now North Dakota, this area is the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site. The Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, established by Congress in 1974, was once the homeland of the Hidatsa and Mandan Indians. The most famous visitors to the site were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark during their 1804-1805 winter encampment at Fort Mandan (North Dakota). The area contains archaeological sites, including the remains of three villages that once were occupied by several thousand people, areas where small groups camped for short periods of time, trails, burial sites, and many different activity areas.
