    MEDIA RELEASE For Immediate Release Singapore Swimming appoints Sergio Lopez as Head Coach SINGAPORE, 18 November 2014 – Singapore Swimming Association (SSA) announced today the appointment of Sergio Lopez as the Head Coach of Singapore Swimming. Spaniard Lopez, 45, has served for the past seven years as the Head Coach and Aquatics Director at The Bolles School. It was at Bolles where he trained Singaporean swimmer Joseph Isaac Schooling for the last four years. Schooling, who medalled at the 2014 Commonwealth and Asian Games is ranked top 10 in the world in the 100 metres butterfly event and also regarded as one of the best butterfly specialists at college level in the United States at this point. “I want to thank the Singapore Swimming Association and the Singapore Sports Institute (SSI) for believing in me and giving me this chance to lead Singapore Swimming. "It is a privilege to have been chosen to lead Singapore Swimming to greater heights and to work alongside the Singaporean coaches and help them develop swimming to the highest levels possible. "The ultimate goal is to establish Singapore Swimming as one of the top in the world over the next five years. I know that it is not an easy task, but I believe that with the talent of swimmers, coaches and the resources that the SSA and SSI have in place, the dream is attainable. "This is a team effort and I believe that if we all work for the good of Singapore, then the sky is the limit,” said Lopez. During his time as Head Coach and Aquatics Director at the Bolles School, Lopez was also part of the USA Senior National Coaching Team from 2012 to 2014 and USA Junior National Team Coaching Team from 2009 to 2014.

The students are from four JSAs, which were first set up in January 2008, to supplement the sports programmes in schools and provide more opportunities for student athletes who wish to excel. 3. With hard work and commitment, these JSA student graduates have completed a 2-year JSA training programme. Some have also represented Singapore at regional and international competitions. The training philosophy of the JSAs emphasises the long-term development of athletes. Hence, MOE has developed the Athletes Profiling and Tracking System (APTS) to track and study the long term physical and sporting development of these students into adult athletes. APTS will capture information such as height, weight, National Physical Fitness Awards (NAPFA) results and sporting achievements till they are 30 years old. The information will help athletes in setting short and long- term goals for training. MOE sports officials can offer sporting advice and guidance when the need arises. The APTS can also provide a platform for continual communication and sharing between the graduates and MOE sports officials on useful information such as nutritional and exercise tips.

As my role in the PSC involves data on various sports there has been a demand from the swimming community and fellow researchers for this data. Their was a further blow to Philippine Swimming when the organizing commitee of Myanmar changed the deadline of submission from November 15 to October 10. Meaning they could no longer rely on a few major swimming champs between those dates for qualification. I was assisted by Hiroshi who has helped compile the latest ranking lists for South East Asian swimming. After much consultation we decided we will be including Converted swimming times from yards to Meters (mainly done by Fil-Heritage swimmers in the United States) as they have been used before for qualification for SEA Games. Its important to note alot of PSI and Non Psi members felt converted times were justifiable for performance and qualification purposes. Hiroshi has kindly noted the converted swimming times and what the previous time was before the conversion. We have also used the national ranking lists of Phil Swim which can be found here. Hiroshi has also included combined relay times based on the best 4 swimmers which he stated was traditional practice in swimming.
