The litany of the Most Holy Name of Jesus brings to mind the words of St. Paul: “whatever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus" (Col 3:17). This tribute of supplication to our Lord is thought to have been composed by two 15th century champions of devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, St. Bernardine of Siena and his student St. John of Capistrano. The litany of the Most Holy Name of Jesus received the Church’s approval for private use by Pope Sixtus V in 1585, and public recitation by Pope Leo XIII in 1886. (It is one of only six litanies approved for public use.) This litany can be found (among other places) at https://www.ourcatholicprayers.com/holy-name-of-jesus.html.

Editor’s Note: As the words Christus Vincit roll off of our lips at today’s High Mass, as we bow our heads at the name of Jesus both during Holy Mass and while at prayer in our homes (teaching our children to do the same), Christians may be struck with how often our Lord’s Name, along with His title of ’Christ’, are used in vain in movies, the vilest of comment sections while reading news articles, and expressed by popular celebrities with either complete ignorance or mockery. While trying our utmost to avoid this blasphemy, perhaps a small act of reparation can be made to His Holy Name by uttering some short prayer when hearing it, such as May His Name be praised, adored, and loved! If a newcomer to the Latin Mass can sense the presence of holy things happening in our churches by our care for even the smallest of liturgical details, one growing up in this often secularist society may come to sense the holiness of Christ by our even simple care for His Name, a care that is not self-aggrandizing but also not timid or cowardly. 627 12th Street E.
