    ORACLE The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity WINTER 2018 Formation ABROAD fmfrom tethehehe rectector spirit-filled evangelization My dear friends, In a new Apostolic Constitution entitled Veritatis Gaudium (The Joy of Truth), which is directed toward ecclesiastical universities and faculties, our Holy Father calls for a “bold cultural revolution.” He says, “The primary need today is for the entire people of God to be ready to embark upon a new stage of ‘spirit-filled’ evangelization. This ‘spirit-filled’ evangelization envisions ‘a resolute process of discernment, purification, and reform.’ The proclamation of the Gospel and the Church’s doctrine are called to permeate ‘a culture of encounter.’” Our Holy Father recognizes that the future of the Church is in her youth. We must learn from the past and water and nourish, with passionate dedication, the roots that the Second Vatican Council sunk into the earth to hold the Church firm against confusion and chaos. Therefore, we must be unafraid when confronted with vistas uncontemplated, even unimaginable to the Fathers of the Council, to graft creatively a new shoot on the old stock. Young people today do not want to live on the surface. They do not look for quick or ready answers; they seek Gospel clarity that calls for truth, charity and pastoral care. The adventure of orthodoxy, as St. John Paul II taught us, is what attracts young people today. It is the challenge of fidelity, integrity, authenticity and solidarity – the joy of the Gospel – the joy of truth. This is essential for a Church that goes forth. The Holy Father’s clarion call for a radical paradigm shift – a “bold cultural revolution” – demands of us great patience in order to develop the docility, creativity and availability needed to embrace God’s will and begin again in earnest with “spirit-filled evangelization.” Every January, our seminarians set out on a mission with this same spirit of evangelization.

    THE 1920s THE HISTORY OF ST. 1921 – Archbishop Dowling decrees that St. JOSEPH’S CHURCH – Margaret’s and St. Mary’s Churches be merged into a new parish: St. Joseph’s. The altar from St. Margaret’s is brought over and used in the new church. Pius XI is elected Pope. St. Margaret’s Church on Bren Road near Shady Oak Road in Minnetonka, serving the Bohemian settlers, was built in 1880. Fr. Joseph Hovorka was the pastor of St. Margaret’s from 1904 to 1921. 1923 – The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet arrive to form the teaching staff. St. Joseph’s School opens with six grades the first year, adding grades 7 & 8 in the two succeeding years. Sr. Agnes Aloysius Thompson is principal. The other sisters are Sister Cosmos Shea, Sister Mary Magdeline Swoboda, Sister Marie Celeste Delage, Sister Theresa Louise McGuire and Sister Carlos Eue, who taught music.

Flynn (1933-2019) Archbishop Flynn, who served as Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis for 13 years, died on Sunday, September 22, 2019, at his residence in St. Paul. Harry Joseph Flynn was born in Schenectady, New York, in 1933. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Albany in 1960, was consecrated the coadjutor bishop for the Diocese of Lafayette in Louisiana in 1986, and served as bishop of that diocese from 1989 until 1994. He was appointed coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis in 1994, and upon the retirement of Archbishop Roach, became the diocese’s seventh Archbishop on September 8, 1995. Archbishop Flynn retired as Archbishop of the Archdiocese on his 75th birthday, May 2, 2008, as required by canon law. Archbishop Flynn was well known for his pastoral kindness to individual persons. With an encyclopedic memory for individuals’ names and needs, he reached out constantly to people of all ages, religions, and stations in life. He directed that personal enthusiasm and warmth to the recruitment of candidates for the priesthood, and for most of his tenure, the Archdiocese ordained more priests than it lost each year through death and retirement. Archbishop Flynn was deeply devoted to the spiritual formation of clergy, of religious, and of lay people.

Many seminarians wear a chain on their wrist, signifying that they made the consecration to Mary, while others wear the Brown Scapular. These are a public witness and a personal reminder that Mary is always with us as our Mother. Michael E. Gaitley’s book 33 Days to Morning Glory is quite popular among the seminarians as well, especially as we mark the 100th anniversary of Fatima in 2017. Recently, I asked Alex Marquette, a new man from Maple Lake, Minn., what inspired him to make his consecration to Mary. He responded, “I admire the devotion of Nathaniel Daubner, and I want to have that, too.” Nathaniel has a contagious devotion to and love for Mary.
